DF Announcements / Re: Dwarf Fortress 0.31.01 Released
« on: April 01, 2010, 04:23:55 pm »
I think I love you.

Today is the first day of my two week holiday from school, (extended Easter)

And now this has happened.

*Faints from joy*

Journal of Navok

10th of Slate, 303 A.C.

Hmmm, this could be bad. Soon after arriving one of our new migrants, Nil Iteblogem seems to have gone insane. Evidently the strain of having him home destroyed and then having to make his way here has affected him badly.

Currently he is bunkered down inside our craftdwarfs workshop, growling at anyone who dares to approach.

Elsewhere in the fort we have dwarves rushing around everywhere, a good portion of them helping to stock the new forges, where our new smiths are burning wood for charcoal. Gnooble has recruited some of the new migrants to help him build some more bedrooms, but until we have a sizeable supply of wood we cannot spare much for beds if we hope to get some smithing going.

13th of Slate, 303 A.C.

We’re in trouble.

Evidently the elven merchants grew tired of waiting for us to finally com out and trade with them, and they have left before we could buy anything.

With the new help taking over some of his other duties Wilson has been able to devote more time to brewing, so we hopefully shouldn’t starve, but supplies will be tight until the next trade caravan passes our way.

In order to prevent things like this I have decided to set up a permanent trade depot, as well as some other modifications to our entrance, though first we need to finish our lake project.

16th of Slate, 303 A.C.

Crisis averted, it seems that Nil has regained his sanity, after spending days in the workshop, he emerged carrying a Birch idol he calls “Notlithzugob”, I must say, the craftdwarfship is amazing, as soon as we have a larger stockpile for wood I am going to get him to make some wooden crafts for trade.

Also with the lake nearly finished we have begun work on our entrance, and a complete restructuring of the workshop storage areas. In order to ensure the safety of our workers the military has been pulled out of training to patrol the surrounding area.

16th Felsite, 303 A.C.

*This page is crumpled, as though gripped hard in anger*

So much for Imps “carp protection device”, as soon as we breached the wall a carp made it straight through, he claims that it should work, but apparently it doesn’t.

I have reclaimed my axe and I’m taking the squad down to guard the edge until something can be done to fix it.

((The hell? I thought that fortifications were supposed to keep out fish?!))

I'll see about adding some rooms to the Barracks when the lake project is done, as for silver, that's dependant on whether we find any or not. Currently we have found iron, a green ore i think is tin or zinc or something, and a quite large vein of platinum (well large for a platinum vein)

I can scarcely believe it, its actually been a whole year since we first arrived here. While I didn’t notice it at the time I suppose that its actually quite unusual that we arrived here on exactly the same day as the New Year.

The celebration was as grand as we could make it with only 7 dwarves and a severely limited choice in booze, but despite our efforts the event was quite sombre.

Its been a year since Tarran left us to find help, since we were stranded here.

Dear Rakas, please let him be okay.

4th of Granite, 303 A.C.

Darkness approached me with an interesting idea today, to divert some of the river flowing north of our home into an artificial lake.

The idea interested me, so with the help of Imp we were able to devise a way of digging what would cause the water to not flood, while Gnooble assured us that he would be able to built a stone wall to keep dangerous fish out, while letting water through.

After a couple hours of planning we have come up with a set of plans for how to build our lake.

12th of Granite, 303 A.C.

Elven traders arrived today, after much discussion we decided to set up a temporary trading post for them. Hopefully they will have brought some booze, our stores are running dangerously low.

1st of Slate, 303 A.C.

Work on the Depot goes slowly, It seems that Gnooble has a hatred of elves, and while he doesn’t openly express it for the last two weeks he has managed to avoid setting up to Depot, unfortunately he is the only one with the skills to do i-

Bloody hell! What’s going on out there? Everyone has just started shouting, I’d better go see what the problem is.

Entry Ends here

Navok looked down at the group of dwarves clustered around the trees, he counted 22 of them in all, many clothed in rags.

“What in the name of Armok is going on here?” Navok wondered out loud.

“Your awareness seems to be slipping Navok.”

Startled by the voice right behind him Navok spun round, his Axe whistling through the air towards the origin of the voice, causing him to nearly lose his balance as it cut only thin air, thudding into the ground from his overhead cut.

“Well that’s not a nice way to greet me Navok.” Looking up from where he was trying to tug his axe free, Navok saw the dwarf who had startled him.

Standing there, minus his armour and weapon, with the addition of a few scars, was Tarran.

2nd of Slate, 303 A.C.

It looks like were staying.

Tarran’s return has bought us some unwelcome news, whereas we had hoped for some of our nations forts to have survived the attack it was apparently not so, there were a few places where we were beginning to rebuild, but by comparison to most of those places we were a large fort.

Still, despite this I actually feel better, no longer is this just some unknown place, where I am forced to wait for help, it is now home, and I will defend it.

The refugees Tarran brought with him pose both a problem and a solution, while the extra manpower will be useful it means more mouths to feed, as such I have taken all dwarves with essential skills off of hauling duty, so they can work more. Gnooble has been spoken to strictly about his reluctance to build the depot.

Me and Tarran have selected four of the newcomers and have begun training them, two of the dwarves have admitted to some past smithing experience, and so have been set to making steel weapons and armour, until they are done we will train our new soldiers in wrestling. Since I won’t be needing it for a while I have passed my axe to one of the newcomers, who is now acting as the forts woodcutter.

4th of Slate, 303 A.C.

The new arrivals are making themselves useful indeed, on my way to the barracks today I saw one of them smoothing down the dining hall, that should make it a much more pleasant place to eat.

End Log

Well, we seem to be slightly f***ed here, we have nowhere NEAR the Booze supplies to support 30 dwarves, we have nowhere near enough rooms and our food supply will JUST hold, maybe.

This always annoys me about the first migrant wave, its never just a manageable amount of dwarves, it just floods you. ;-;

Still, we now have a lot more manpower, as well as a whole bunch of unclaimed dwarves for anyone who would like one.

20
(Hmmm, it seems that I misread the dates slightly, our fortress was actually founded in 302 A.C., not 300 A.C. as I had previously thought._

17th of Opal, 302 A.C.

Imp and Robina have really improved in their mining skills since we arrived here. It seems to me as though they less dig through the rock and more walk forwards at a steady rate, the rock crumbling into dust before them.

Truly they are Legendary Miners.

16th Obsidian, 302 A.C.

Well its finished, our new metal-forging area is a grand sight. As well as the standard forging equipment and storages, we also have a separate area solely for steel smithing towards the north.

It is also completely pointless, as we will hopefully be gone before long, and it takes a long time to learn smithing.

But still, in a situation such as ours boredom is one of the chief enemies, and making this place has kept us busy, and hopefully so will stocking it with ores and metal.

21
Sorry I've been consumed with Spring Break. Well I'm anxious for my guy to take control and tie the knot due to the fact that he gets her pregnant
Erm sorry, you might be waiting a LONG TIME for THAT

Also sorry, Darkness and Rob(ina) are both female (as opposed to male like was asked for)

Anyways updates later hopefully, unfortunately for me  Weekend =/= Lots of free time to do updates.

If its sandbox, I still need time to realise that there is no air. Usually there are doors easy to go back through, in the arrival hall leaving the ship I have to open two blast doors before I'm safe. Sometimes, like just now, that takes a little bit too long.

I have a request, when you're playing sandbox mode alone, PLEASE DO NOT BLOODY CAUSE THE ARRIVAL HALL TO HAVE NO AIR! Geez, at least give people a chance to get onto the station properly before dieing.

Awwww, that server crash interrupted my SCIENCE!!

Also that was hilarious, the second I walked into my new job, (chemist) I was greeted by some guy blowing himself up.

26
(Note: I'm planning to do a fix of 3rd persona nd log entries, each style is better at different things)

6th of Timber, 300 A.C.

Things are going well in our little hole in the ground, all around me I can hear the sounds of work, recently the focus has been on processing the remains of our newly slaughtered animals.

In order to make use of everything Darkness has taken up bone carving, and is planning to make some armour. I myself have been busy tanning the hides, though I will leave the actual leather work to one more skilled, the leather will at least be light to take with me when we are rescued.

Other than that things are going as normal, we slowly expand, mainly storage areas, and Tarran has still not returned.

It has been 9 months since he first set out, I hope he is ok, because if he’s dead then we are in trouble, as I would be the only one with a hope of surviving to find help. But that would leave the rest unprotected.

Still hopefully it won’t come to that…

9th Timber, 300 AC

Robina found some malachite today, a lot of malachite!! As far as we can tell it is either two veins close to each other, or one very long vein in a zigzag pattern.

Tarran is still not back.

Praise Rakas!! Even as I was writing Robina has struck metal again! This time a cluster of magnetite, along with some platinum to sweeten the deal. Once she's done mining a small amount out she's going to build a smithing complex.

Navok crouched down behind the tree, gripping his axe tightly. Peeking through the leaves he could make out the silhouette of a dwarf, standing at the side of a mule, to his right Darkness also peered around the tree.

“So whats the problem? Its just a trader?”

 “Prove it”

Darkness looked back over at Navok, who was gripping his axe and scowling, “What do you mean?” she asked.

“For all we know they could be Loyalist spies, and even if they aren’t if we let them know we’re here then rumours might start spreading, we don’t want that to happen, now come on, lets get back inside!”

The two dwarves returned to the fort, locking the doors behind them. As they passed the entrance the dogs sat up, tails wagging as they saw Navok, who chuckled and dropped a few pieces of meat to them.

Stepping downstairs into the forts main area Navok looked around, taking in his surroundings. It wasn’t luxurious by any meaning of the word, but it was good considering the time they had had to put it together. Looking to his right he could see their new bedrooms, Gnooble had done an excellent job putting them together.

As he walked down the corridor he bumped into another dwarf, receiving a groping from behind. Turning round he saw Johanne walking off in the other direction, winking at him.

With a grin on his face he continued to his room, however as he entered the grin died, and Navok sat on the bed, his head in his hands.

Navok was worried, nearly everything about this situation screamed wrong at him, he didn’t know where he was, and he had to protect six civilians by himself with… Almost guiltily he looked down at his side, where a while bandage was just visible at the bottom of his shirt.

He knew he was lucky, the Injury would heal with time and most dwarves would have even survived as drop like he did, but out of all the times to be injured this was one of the worst.

With a sigh he rested his head against the cool limestone wall of his room, “Damn it Tarran, hurry up.”

(Well, there we go, how is this compared with the previous entry? Better? Worse? These take longer to write but personally I prefer them, and when fights actually happen it will be a lot easier)
(For those wondering the whole “injury” thing is justice explanation for why an Ex-kings guard is only a proficient Axe Dwarf)
(edit: It looked longer in word, damn you margins and your cruel mocking illusions ;-;)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: The Little Questions Thread
« on: March 26, 2010, 11:05:09 am »
In a fort im running now My dwarves have become antisocial for some reason, rather than use that nice Meeting area OR the meeting hall they prefer to lurk in their rooms.

Whats causing this? An is there any way to fix it?

29
A few pretty pictures for ya

Here's the embark screen, according to Sitefinder we have a magma pipe somewhere around here, but otherwise its a mystery what lies below.

Our entrance, the doors are made out of limestone, the wood cut for them was put to use as beds ^_^
Below and to the left you can see the small room used as our current meeting hall

To the right you can see our current stockpile, then our food, then farms and kitchens. To the far left there are workshops. I'm planning to build a new set of rooms for storage on the left, and then convert the big room on the right to bedrooms (mason experience yay)

Where we eat, those gems are gonna make for some nice engravings later on when we have a skilled engraver.

And the barracks, until the storage/bedroom conversion takes place our dwarves sleep here.

IC update later, ima try switching to mainly 3rd person storytelling, rather than logbooks. Tell me which ya prefer when you've read the update later.

30
Ok, I'm heading off the computer for tonight, tomorrow after school I'll get some pictures of the fort so far.
A slight warning, updates make be sporadic over the next month or so, due to exams. i will still be playing but if I fail these I'm royally F***ed, so revision comes before DF as they get closer unfortunately ;-;.
