For some reason, the graphics are totally corrupted when I try this under Ubuntu Linux 9.04. I welcome suggestions.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Retrieving a Seed
« on: September 17, 2009, 08:32:50 am »
Hi - is there a way to retrieve a seed from a previously generated region? I'm toying around with world generation and would like to continually generate worlds until I find an exact match for what I'm looking for. I'd rather not hassle with writing down every seed as I go.

DF Modding / Re: Zombie Mod?

There is the zombie mod.  Zombies will attack in swarms of about 30 as early  as your first winter

OH, I missed this somehow. Thanks!

DF Modding / Zombie Mod?
« on: September 16, 2009, 09:34:14 am »
Would it be possible to setup a mod so that zombies begin sieging the fortress after the first year or two? Preferrably LOTS and LOTS of zombies that are relatively easy to slay but relentless in their approach. I think this would make for a fun scenario, but I don't know enough about modding to make it happen.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Reveal on Dwarf Heaven?
« on: September 15, 2009, 12:24:49 pm »
There isn't any magnetite on dwarf heaven, although on mine I did a little editing in the raws to ensure it almost always shows up.

Then I guess it's not really heaven is it? What dwarf would be satisfied without ore to rip out of the earth and forge into the finest weapons? I'll probably just look for a map with similar features but also includes a few metric fuck-tons of ore. Thanks for the reply.

Dang. That punishment system for mandates really needs to be worked out.

Or does it...? Where else can you get this kind of entertainment? When I tell people about Dwarf Fortress who have never played, the hammerer always gets a laugh.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Reveal on Dwarf Heaven?
« on: September 15, 2009, 08:24:10 am »
Does anyone have a reveal'd save on the dwarf heaven map? I spent the good part of an hour strip mining it last night searching for magnetite and came up empty handed. I'd do it myself, but I'm on a Linux OS, so I can't use the executable. In case you're foggy on what "dwarf heaven" is, I'm referring to:

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Need Help Training My Army
« on: September 11, 2009, 12:26:28 pm »
Hi all. I run into the same problem time and time again. I dedicate a group of dwarves to the military and set them to training in the barracks. Before too long, I have a nice handful of legendary champions, and everything seems fine. This is where the problems begin. I give them some armor and some weapons to continue developing their skills. Before long, there's blood all over the barracks, and at least a few are laid up in bed with spinal injuries and any dreams of victory on the battlefield shattered. How do you approach training weapons without sustaining permanent debilitating injuries?

Thanks for the suggestions. I have a magma pipe, which runs down many z-levels. I haven't explored around it too much other than digging a channel to run it closer to my fort, but I don't recall seeing obsidian over there. Is obsidian typically found near magma pipes as well as pools?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Mid-fort strategy

Lately I've been drafting hordes of slackers trying to build a nice military. In combination with the Orc mod, the problem of overpopulation will pretty much take care of itself. Build a nice big barracks with a lot of beds and keep them occupied with wrestling. Before long, you'll have a few squads of badasses ready to die for the common good.

Instead of using dwarf manager or something sophisticated like that, I just assign dwarves with no job to do whatever is needed at the moment (or use the job manager). I have about 40 dwarves right now, and the number of idlers is usually less than ten. Just make sure you have enough farming and brewing going on to keep them fed and full of drink and then attend to any specific complaints as they arise. Alternatively, you can just lock up moody dwarves in a holding cell until they die and then quickly shuttle them out to the nearest graveyard.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Resource Woes
« on: August 28, 2009, 08:30:03 am »
So I have a pretty fun scenario going. My dwarves are in their second year (coming up on 3rd), and I've built an ad-hock fort into the side of a narrow mountain passage. I'm using the Orc mod, so my main strategy so far has been to design the fort to turtle up when the siege happens. In my last game, the orcs showed up right after the first new year and quickly destroyed me. This time I have two drawbridges running through the granite mountain wall (and tons of supplies), so I should be able to just order everyone inside, throw the switches, and ride it out until my military is strong enough to put up a good fight.

I found a magma pipe right out of the gate using the cheap trading depot hack, and I have a forge and smelter attached to it's outflow. The problem is, I've only found enough hematite to make about ten pig iron bars. I have five miners that are all at or near legendary skill level just utterly decimating the first four z-levels desperately searching for ore. All my wrestlers are elite champions and such, and I would love to get them geared up to take on the Orcs, but the resources to make lots of steel just don't seem to be there. Does anyone else run into this issue often? Are there any good alternatives to steel weaponry? I'm having a lot of fun on this map and want to play it out to the end, but I'd also love to rain some hell down on the Orcs.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll try to coax them into completing the wall when I go home and see how it goes.
