Well, if that plan of mine comes through then at least you'll only have to fill it once.  (You might want to leave a backup, just in case though...)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Survival fort challenge
« on: June 15, 2011, 08:54:12 pm »
I've got a fort in the starting stages, (first year) and I'm planning on making it a military fortress.  That is, every able-bodied dwarf will be drafted into the military, and recieve training if possible.  I'll take this challange eventually, when it's matured, and after I set a bunch of automatic schedualing etc.  I bet that it'll only die after the booze runs out (probably when some tiny fire &&& sneaks in).....

You need something with magma, like magma bombs or a magma volcano cannon.  Add Lignite bins to the former to add to the carnage.

Oh, wow...  I just had an awesome idea. :o

It looks like this:
Code: [Select]
______
█¢<% █
█ %>X█
█≈██¢█
███
The 'X' is where you put the Bin (by any means necessary); on top of a one-tile retracting bridge or magma-safe hatch. Then you power the pumps, the magma should cycle through once (getting stuck by the hatch at the top-left) and the lignite should be burning. Then you open the hatch, dropping the Bin on whoever's unfortunate enough to be directly below.  With some modification, this could even use a bridge-a-pult to fire the Bins instead of just dropping them.

The nicest thing about this design is that you only need a little bit of magma, and it doesn't get used up.  The real ammunition, Steel Lignite Bins, is much easier to store and replace than magma is.  Also, because the magma only briefly covers the ammunition, it might be possible to use raw lignite instead of a steel lignite bin, thus making it rediculously easy to reload.

PS: May I have permission to possibly, sometime in the not-so-near future, create a few much smaller and more spartan cutters and corvettes?  Because my latest embark has a ton of vertical space, if somewhat lacking in the other two dimentions...

Well, Windows/PC I suppose; but I wouldn't mind knowing methods for all the platforms...  :P

You got a forum link for that?  I wanted to include it before, from the legends thread, but I wanted the forum thread if possible.  Plus, I need the guy's forum profile link.

Oh, one more thing: to make it clear, this thread is for nominating People, not Projects.  So, Boatmurdered isn't a nominee, but Evilslug might be one.  I'm still on the fence with how to go with community forts. (Maybe a "Cooperative Victory" or something...)

PS: the reason I ask for the project link is because I can always use that to get to the nominee's forum profile, while I can only do the reverse if he has said project in his sig (most do, but some have moved onto other projects since then).

PPS @Itnetlolor: yes it is, in-game it's called a scientific victory but that's taken by the dorfputers; technically you have a megaproject victory.

I've updated the OP, removed the major/minor victory distinction and provided a good format for nominations.  I won't be doing any more listings myself if I can, so make sure to get it all in the right format.  I will not be accepting any nominations that do not provide a link to the project's thread.  I might do some more organization by type later though, if we get enough listings, or maybe a breakdown between the different kinds of victory. (I have a vauge method already, but it's based on intuition and very much arbitrary.)

DF General Discussion / How does DF handle it's UI?
« on: June 14, 2011, 08:24:56 am »
Hello, I've been trying to make a DF-style TUI (Terminal User Interface) for some time now, but I've been having some problems.  I can do the graphics easily enough with a normal graphical output, (although I've been having trouble finding one that will take individual pixel color assignments without linearizing) but what I haven't been able to find is a way to read the keyboard in real-time.

Nobody at my college seems to know this, so I must resort to asking if anyone on the forum knows.  I'd prefer the answer in C++ (or better yet, an assembly language) but I'll take any form I can get.  Oh, and if you can tell me how to read the CPU's timer, that'd be nice too.

Oh, and to clarify before someone makes the mistake: I do not want a program that will do this for me.  I actually want to do as much as possible myself, the more control I have the better.  I only want a way to read what keys are being (or have been) pressed; I can do all the looping for a real-time reading of said keys easily enough.  I also have an idea for having keystrokes being stored on a queque should some actions take a while, so please don't go into multithreading or anything like that.

The first guy is Retro, and I think the second one's a fort named flarechannels or something; I forget.

Really though, that's the point of this thread: so that the names can all be remembered somewhere.

DF General Discussion / Dwarven Saints.
« on: June 12, 2011, 02:17:35 am »
In the history of the game, many epic characters have arised from the random 's and 's of civilization.  However, the more stable DF becomes, the less likely such epicness is to arise; for instance, there will never be another Morul because attribute gains are now capped.  And if ever new heros do arise, then the old ones will be forgotten.  It's already begun, half the people here have never even heard of Urist as anything but a random name!

Well, they shall be forgotten no longer.  It is time to Canonize a few old legends, sadly without a magma cannon...  I'll start the list, but I haven't played long enough to make sure I've gotten everyone included, so tell me if I forget anything.  Also, feel free to propose new dorfs (or other creatures) for canonization, but  be aware that it won't make the cut unless a lot of people agree with it and there are few objectors.

And so, let the rolls of honor begin:

Saint Urist

Patron Saint of...
 • Cats
 • Daggers
 • Hermits
 • Immigrant Traps

Saint Morul

Patron Saint of...
 • Badass

Saint Cacame

Patron Saint of...
 • Hammers
 • Woodcutters
 • Beards
 • Vengance

Saint Tholtig

Patron Saint of...
 • Legends
 • Warriors
 • Monarchs
 • Grudges

DF General Discussion / Winners of Dwarf Fortress

Throughout the ages, a few people have made such lasting impressions on the community through their forts that they could be considered to actually have WON the game.  I wish to make a listing here of such people, so that all may marvel apon their accomplishments.  Feel free to nominate anyone you want by making an entry, if it's good I'll add it in.

The creiteria for making this list are:
 • Something must have been done in-game; sorry, no modding victories.
 • The project must have been picked up by the community, ex. multiple watchers etc.
 • You must have done some actual work; accidently finding something awesome doesn't count unless you do something with it.
 • All three of the above can be circumvented if your project becomes famous enough to be remembered for a long time.
Please post all nominations in the following format, in
brackets (so I can copy/paste easier).
Code: [Select]
<player_name> for <name_of_project_etc>. (<I'll_fill_this> Victory)

So, without any further ado, I give you:

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Aquifier Help
« on: June 12, 2011, 01:01:33 am »
How do you create walls? Water does freeze in my biome, just will have to wait till winter to get it done.
build->Construction->wall.

I don't blame you for quitting, even veterans have a hard time with aquifers.  Oh, and fyi: almost all aquifers are like this one, only occasionally will you find a fluke where only part of the map has an aquifer.  It's possible to deliberately seek such a spot though, but I won't go into that...

Earthen plugs and ice mining do it for me; barring that I'd suggest turning off *all* labors save pump operating for *all* your dwarves except a few expendable workers to try and achieve the moses effect (see wiki) on a small scale, then hope that the aquifer's only one layer deep.

It means that said dwarf is now a hardened veteran, and will no longer be upset by the sight nor prospect of death.  He's essentially a broken man dwarf; if you've ever seen an emotional movie related to war (especially WWI), then odds are you've seen at least one character like this.

You need to make sure that the zone encompasses some solid ground to walk on; the ledge from which the dwarves can dump the water.  Otherwise they have no way to get to the site.....

You sure pots don't count as barrels for reservations?  Well, if that's true then I suggest just having a barrel/pot stockpile right next to the food pile; you might want to designate it to take from the main furnature stockpile as well.
