Strange. I've just tried installing again, in a different location, and it's working fine. Oh well, no worries then.

I decided to pick up DF after a long absence, but I can't seem to successfully generate a new world. It keeps getting stuck on "Finalizing civ mats... (3/5)", and just sits there for ages and ages and ages until the program eventually crashes.

Anyone else had this happen? Or know how to work around it? I thought it might be a world size issue, but I'm trying on a small region.
Where did you get your DF from?
That'll help people work out what the issue is.

Regular vanilla DF doesn't do this (unless there's some unrelated issue with your PC), so if you're not using that, try it out and see what happens. Then eliminate mods one at a time until you get something playable.

It's plain ole vanilla DF, downloaded from this very site, no mods.

I intend to expand into the caverns, though. Yes, I'm aware that's going to be very difficult. In any case, pits might be a good interim measure until I can get access to the magma. That said, I'm probably going to need the magma sooner rather than later so I can craft the weapons I'm going to need, since I can't rely on charcoal...

Hehe. This is going to be Fun.

Eeenteresting.

Maybe some lava and/or traps at the bottom is the way to go. Steel/iron traps are lavaproof, right? A chamber full of traps and lava would re-kill them, zombies-on-fire or not, and then the lava would incinerate the remains, right?

Hm. They can't climb out of pits, can they? Maybe pits of infinite zombies might be the way to go.

Hm hm hm. Since you can't mark an area as a pit and then designate the corpse to go in the pit, I guess it'd have to be a retractable bridge over a pit, tagged as a dumping zone? Then you tag the zombie corpse as garbage and pull the lever once it's dumped.

Oh Kudust.

So much for my plans to make a fortress full of elite hammerdwarves to pulp the zombies with. Back to the drawing board, I guess. Thanks.

In an evil biome, if you have a corpse that reanimates, if you manage to kill it again using, say, blunt weapons, will it ever reanimate again?

DF Gameplay Questions / Crippling lag in adventurer mode
« on: May 20, 2011, 04:52:53 am »
I'm trying to get into one of my abandoned fortresses as an adventurer, but every step I take in there takes about 15 seconds to load.

The weird thing is I have been into the fort before in adventurer and didn't have any problems. I grabbed some loot and got out. I think I then retired the adventurer, tried to reclaim the site and got attacked by a stray forgotten beast. So I abandoned again and tried to get into the site with an adventurer to take out the monster, and this is when the crippling lag started.

The reason I'm trying to get into the fort is because I'm running into problems with trying to un-retire an adventure, getting a "nemesis unit load failed". I heard a suggestion that it can happen if you're in a settlement that has sent a diplomat to a fort that you abandon while the diplomat is still there. So I want to get into this fort and kill any diplomats I find. Failing that, if I somehow could wipe the fort off the map completely maybe that would fix the problem too.

So is there anything I could do to fix the problem? Any clever tricks with dfhack etc?

Excellent! That's done it! Thanks very much :D

Here's what it looks like for me: http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee447/ASERghsrhtdsrsth/legendsviewer.png. It looks wacky aside from zoominess - the IE frame isn't filling the screen. It doesn't fill it if I set to lower resolution either.

Changing the zoom settings in IE then restarting Legends Viewer doesn't alter the display. It's IE 8.

Personally, I like the idea of a civ's icon being more prominent. But I guess it's a moot point if it's not exported anyway :)

Very nice. I was about to undertake writing a tool to parse the Legends files, but then I saw that it had already been made :D

One main issue. On my laptop, the main display seems to be behind the left sidebar a little. The left edge of all the text is cut off, which really sucks.

Other than that, what would be really nice is if the civilizations' icons were their symbol and colours as they are in the game. I'm guessing that data doesn't get exported, though, or you'd probably have done it already.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / How do you sell stuff for currency?

I can't figure out how to sell loot for money. If I press the buttons to offer/demand money, the shopkeeper accepts the deal but then it always says he "owes me" the money, even though there's always a chest full of coins right there in the shop. If I help myself to the coins first, in order to "buy" them, they don't show up in the shop inventory. Also, if a shopkeeper owes me money, I exit the trade screen and come back in suddenly he thinks he doesn't owe me anything any more. So how exactly do I sell my stuff and actually get money?
