DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Stuck on "Finalizing civ mats" in worldgen :(
« on: February 23, 2019, 09:20:46 pm »
I decided to pick up DF after a long absence, but I can't seem to successfully generate a new world. It keeps getting stuck on "Finalizing civ mats... (3/5)", and just sits there for ages and ages and ages until the program eventually crashes.

Anyone else had this happen? Or know how to work around it? I thought it might be a world size issue, but I'm trying on a small region.

DF Gameplay Questions / Reanimated corpses in evil biomes
« on: August 27, 2013, 03:36:22 am »
In an evil biome, if you have a corpse that reanimates, if you manage to kill it again using, say, blunt weapons, will it ever reanimate again?

DF Gameplay Questions / Crippling lag in adventurer mode
« on: May 20, 2011, 04:52:53 am »
I'm trying to get into one of my abandoned fortresses as an adventurer, but every step I take in there takes about 15 seconds to load.

The weird thing is I have been into the fort before in adventurer and didn't have any problems. I grabbed some loot and got out. I think I then retired the adventurer, tried to reclaim the site and got attacked by a stray forgotten beast. So I abandoned again and tried to get into the site with an adventurer to take out the monster, and this is when the crippling lag started.

The reason I'm trying to get into the fort is because I'm running into problems with trying to un-retire an adventure, getting a "nemesis unit load failed". I heard a suggestion that it can happen if you're in a settlement that has sent a diplomat to a fort that you abandon while the diplomat is still there. So I want to get into this fort and kill any diplomats I find. Failing that, if I somehow could wipe the fort off the map completely maybe that would fix the problem too.

So is there anything I could do to fix the problem? Any clever tricks with dfhack etc?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / How do you sell stuff for currency?
« on: April 23, 2011, 03:30:05 am »
I can't figure out how to sell loot for money. If I press the buttons to offer/demand money, the shopkeeper accepts the deal but then it always says he "owes me" the money, even though there's always a chest full of coins right there in the shop. If I help myself to the coins first, in order to "buy" them, they don't show up in the shop inventory. Also, if a shopkeeper owes me money, I exit the trade screen and come back in suddenly he thinks he doesn't owe me anything any more. So how exactly do I sell my stuff and actually get money?

DF Gameplay Questions / Marksdwarves not training and militia being stoopid
« on: February 25, 2011, 07:02:51 am »
I'm getting two issues with my latest fort. Not sure if these are specific to the latest version or what.

1: Marksdwarves aren't training. Ample bolts, bolts allocated in military screen, archery range designated and assigned to crossbow squad. Some of the members' jobs report "going to archery practise" while they stay standing still in the meeting area.

Ordered marksdwarf squad to a specific area. Two of the four showed up. Stood them down and one went to the archery range, unloaded his quiver and then went back to standing around doing nothing.

2: I've put all dwarves, even civilians, into squads in order to arm and armour them. Schedule settings are to "wear uniform when inactive", yet the dorfs only partially armour up. I've got piles of unworn armour around and dwarves missing those pieces. Strangely, pretty much everyone has an axe as ordered but not the armour.

[edit]To clarify: some dwarves will be wearing, say, only a helm and no boots while pairs of boots lie unworn on the stockpile. Others have only their axes. For some reason, my professional squad of full-timers all seem to be fully armoured[/edit]

Even more strangely, I ordered all squads to attack something (that is, ordered every dwarf). Those that were missing armour pieces seemed to scramble to the armour pile and equip them, but when the orders were cancelled they went and removed these pieces (?!).

So are these known issues with the new version? New bugs? Any workarounds? I basically want to arm and armour my entire populace and I'd like to get my marksdwarves training.

My fortress is currently in the middle of a tantrum spiral, and I'd like to abandon and reclaim it because I've gone to a lot of effort to pump magma and I don't want to waste it. The thing is, I've got a sizable stockpile of adamantium armour that I'd really rather wasn't scattered across the countryside. Is there anything I can do to prevent that from happening if I abandon the fort?

Curses / LCS: how do you train up weapons skills?
« on: July 13, 2010, 07:41:39 am »
I want to make a squad of gun-toting, armour plated badasses. I can get as far as recruiting some gang members, having my clothes makers churn out six body armours and buying AR-15s and mags, but the recruits just can't shoot straight; rifle skill never seems any higher than 2. I tried training by shooting up the crack house over and over, but the resident gang came and wiped my team out - apparently they can shoot better.

I also tried seducing an army vet and getting them to teach everyone fighting skills, but there was barely any skill increase at all before I had to abandon it for lack of funds.

So: how do you train weapon skills?

DF Gameplay Questions / How do you desalinate water?
« on: May 10, 2010, 07:11:30 am »
I'm on a saltwater map and trying to desalinate water. The wiki says "Salt water pumped through a pump will become drinkable if then kept separate from natural walls, natural floors, other salt water or an aquifer", so I tried pumping a lake out into box made of stone floors and walls (with ramps for access while constructing):

Code: [Select]
(saltwater lake)
   %
╔═0%0
║+++║
║+++║
║▲++║
╚═══╝
 ▲
This didn't work. I tried removing the pump, building a floor tile under the "output" square of where the pump goes, waiting for all the water to evaporate out of the reservoir and trying again. No luck. What am I doing wrong?

DF Gameplay Questions / Barracks burrows
« on: April 05, 2010, 12:44:22 am »
I've managed to get a squad training with wooden axes. I've set up a barracks complex for them, with a training room, a dormitory and a supply room. I've gone and added a dining room and a nearby food stockpile room, set to take from my main food stockpile in the civilian quarter. To encourage my troops to use their own dining room I've marked their whole barracks as a burrow and assigned them all to it. That is the only burrow I've made so far - I'll make a burrow for the civilian area later but haven't yet.

No supplies are getting moved to the barracks food store, and the troops are getting cranky (they stand around until they're starving, at which point they rush to the civvy quarter to get something to eat. Bad for morale). I tried adding a dedicated "support dwarf" to the military burrow, but he doesn't stock the stockpile either. I tried removing the food store from the military burrow, but it's still not getting stocked. There are plenty of haulers sitting around with nothing to do. What gives? Is this just a bug? How do I get food to my troops so they don't have far to go from their barracks?

DF Modding / Uncookable seeds
« on: November 18, 2009, 01:50:22 am »
Is there any way to prevent seeds from being cooked? So far all I can think of is to remove cooking altogether, but I'd rather not do that.

DF Modding / Water in reactions
« on: November 09, 2009, 11:32:59 pm »
Has anyone been able to get a smelter reaction that uses water, in any way? I understand that extracts don't work because they get spilled. is there any hack or workaround for getting a bucket of water into a reaction? Would making the reaction require a drink with type water work?
