DF Modding / Water in reactions
« on: November 09, 2009, 11:32:59 pm »
Has anyone been able to get a smelter reaction that uses water, in any way? I understand that extracts don't work because they get spilled. is there any hack or workaround for getting a bucket of water into a reaction? Would making the reaction require a drink with type water work?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: will my fort flood from my wells?

You could always add in a pressure-plate activated floodgate to automatically shut off/refill the well reservoir. Also, use a door rather than a floodgate cause they're more responsive.

Maybe rig up the level above containing a cistern of water with the floor being a retractable bridge or having a floor hatch. You have "fire alarm" levers that dump water onto potential fires, like a controlled flood.

I train my troops to champion at wrestler before I even let them pick up a sword. That's cause champion wrestlers can dodge arrows!

I've had this happen in forts that ran out of barrels and didn't have enough wood to make more. It's a major pain because everyone works and moves ridiculously slowly.

Really, it's nothing special and I wouldn't recommended it as a challenge. It just makes the dwarves run slower, which means you have to sit there and spend more time waiting for stuff to get done. Might make them a bit crankier, not sure.

I just had a siege, with a group of hammergoblins and wrestlers attacking my forge and magma pump. I sent my two teams of champion wrestle soldiers to deal with them. The first two to arrive managed to get behind the goblins and rip them to shreds with their copper training swords. I couldn't work out why the siege wasn't lifted, so I checked the list to see a crapton more goblins, with bows, attacking from the other side of my fort.

Dang. I don't want to risk getting my champions killed by arrow fire, so I send in the team of rookie marksdwarves to try to thin them out. They get brutally mown down. Bugger. Last recourse, to save the fortress, is to send my champions in.

The champions proceed to CIRCLE STRAFE the goblins. They don't run in close - just close enough for the goblins to start shooting. Then they run parallel to them, dodging the hail of arrows. The gobs run out of ammo and start running, then the champions absolutely lay into them - chase them down and stab them in the backs.

That just dropped my jaw. The little guys are smart enough to dodge the goblins till they're out of ammo! That's amazing! I wonder if that's all the wrestler training, or something.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Planning Fortresses

I use in-game notes. You get all the symbols in there. So I use them as blueprints, to lay out critical bits of fortress. Building over them is a bit of a pain because you can't have notes on while issuing orders; it's just occured to me to take screenshots of the notes view and use that.

Gets you all possible symbols, z levels, everything. It's also good for labeling switches and what they hook up to. Don't know what a switch does? Check the schematics.
