I have a design for a simple yet always effective depending on what the dwarf does.

W=wall L= lever S= spike D=Door
How it works:The dwarf will stand on the tile where the lever is and will keep pulling on it causing the spike traps to go up and down. If you set the door just behind to passable but pet forbidden, the pet will be forced to get hit by the spike. Works very effectively if you have multiple going off, you can also have as many pet killer halls as you want.

I agree with the philosopher, and the dungeon master.
But with my current fort, I'm gonna say my current mayor. Why? Not only is he nearing legendary axedwarf, and is already legendary woodcutter with perfect stats. He had taken out a squad COMPLETELY by himself with no armor, only an iron axe, and all the orcs were mounted on beak dogs. The orcs then shat many bricks and retreated, with him following behind killing all of the stragglers. (If you want to see his rampage and a marksdwarves rampage, see here.

Anyways, Zruku here doesn't like playing in terrifying biomes or playing deadly challenges. He views those who do as "masochists" and "sadists".

Every one of my migrant dwarves has to serve the military for one year. If they survive I make sure they get nice bedrooms. If they get a ton of kills/legendary they become fortress guard, those who survive and destroy sieges get special rooms.

Forgot that it was a volcano and not just a regular magma pipe.  Here's the location on the map:



Unfortunately, it runs super slow on my computer, so I don't think I'm going to be able to do anything with it myself.  But it's such a cool location that I figured somebody out there would get some use out of it.  I had a vision of cutting the tops off of those spikes, and building a lookout tower with connecting bridges to the main fortress.
What year did you stop it around?

Most recently...
Starting from the begining all on same fort, embarked on a map 16x16 with everything on it UGP UGR Chasm, magma pipe and pool, and hidden fun stuff, planned the whole expedition, embarked...looked around to mark out important spots; magnatite deposites, consentrations of visible gems, Bitumous coal, peat, native copper, native aluminum, native silver, pitchblende, ect.minerals, chasm, fresh water swamp, river with 16z drop falls, 15zcliffs, ....."Where the hell is my magma pipe?" (oh well I'll just have to be careful while digging), start digging into the cliffs....hit warm rock, moved hit moist rock, moves from cliffs, found snailmen didn't enjoy me in the swamp, moved in between chasm and river, learned that GCSs didn't like me near the chasm, at around 5+ i didn't stick around, moved to other side of river near map edged mountain cliffs, found that the two legged rhino lizards SWARMED the mountian cliff face and my only cat (who adoped my miner) loved to drag them to the dwarf with crazed speed, I had to butcher cat to stop the miasma flows, by this time I'm out of booze and hitting the first caravan with carpy basalt crafts, when they deside to constantly come from the other side of the map, the arive once out of four savescums being killed by the harshness, and when they arive, they bring some food, and some craft carp I wont use for a few years, they leave losing guard to 2 GCS as they walk calmly past, leason leaves no trouble, blast past some time into winter where my entire river freezes solid, notes that the fresh water swamp is not even chilly, three kolbolds show up and make off with some crafts I left in the tradepost, and run off south down the moutains, mule I desided to keep for later uncovers an ambush of GCS and I lock up my dwarfs inside till spring, GCS leave and river melts drowning one, I set up for fishing to discover that my dwarves never catch anything...looks for cause NO fish survive for who knows why, fast forward to summer where I've dug a tunnel to the fresh water swamp to hunt for snailmen....seeing that there is the only watersoarce and food soarce, breach into the magma pipe/then UGP/ then hit the UGR/ savescum to avoid deaths set dwarves to hunt, and they go strait to the chasm to attack the GCS/Chasm mountain to attack the moutain goats, and one guy my woodcutter axemen reaches the snailmenless then 15 tiles away compaired to GCS/goats at over 35....woodcutter gets gored by 4 snailmen......Facepalms/just gives up......

Indeed, this is not a modding error, the site naturally has that many vicious beasts. I just thought the modded creatures were relevant to the pure terror this fortress faces.

It has like 8 or 9 chasm tiles.
Mind posting the worldgen parameters, or just the world/savefile itself?

So I embarked on a giant river with a breeding pair of giant cave spiders (used tweak to afford them) and a pair of carp pulled a GIANT CAVE SPIDER into the water to kill it. I am now damming the river to let all the carp air drown.
What are your terrible/horrifying experiences with carp?

Heavily forested
heavy vegetation
magma pipe
calm
underground river
soil layer

and I forgot to bring picks and any sort of metal item besides an axe. Don't ask how I managed it.

In my new aboveground fort I was able to dam the river that went  right under the fort blocking all traffic to the other half (freezing map, melts in spring/summer). Also was able to put in windows for my dwarf hotel(I've NEVER been able to start up a decent glass industry before). What are you proud of doing in your current/other forts?
EDIT: Forgot to mention this fort is made entirely out of obsidian.
