I have and I'm annoyed by it.  My grower keeps wandering off doing nothing until he remembers that he's supposed to be planting quarry bushes.

I keep my dwarfs organized so that they only do one job.

A few minor things I noticed

Some animals are now grazers,  they need grass (or moss) to survive.  You need to put them in a pasture.  They'll starve even in cages.

You can make large pots out of stone.  They basically act like barrels.

Skills and attributes rust.  There's more attributes now too.

The Arena!  You can now test how many knife-wielding goblins it takes to take down a dragon.

There's poultry now, and eggs.  Also bees.  There's pottery, which you use clay for.

I think artifacts are completely indestructible.  If I recall correctly, a wooden artifact will catch on fire but not burn itself out.

Goddamnit. Now I have to pull them all apart... finding the dwarf power for that will be hard. I've got 150 dwarfs and only 1 or 2 idle, every now and then.

What exactly are you doing with your dwarfs?  I've got 40 dwarfs and I usually have 15 available for work.

Is ther some sort of "ideal" uniform I should aim for? I read some places that several chain shirts is a good idea etc? Would be nice with a kind of recepie of what I need to consider in the future ;)

You know you can change the Max Population in init.txt right?

7
If this is anything like 40d they'll go hostile once you get attacked by goblins (ambush or invasion).

I'm pretty sure that an artifact steel warhammer is better than a masterwork silver one.  But I otherwise agree with you.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How to make cats stronger?

If you kill all but your strongest male cat and then have him breed with the the female cats, then do it over and over again, you'll slowly change your cats genetics to increase their strength.

I wouldn't become to reliant on fishing as food supply anyway, it will eventually run out.

I've heard of this but never had it happen, at least in 40d.  You can't fish in the winter, but in the spring everything comes back.  Is it really possible to fish out a biome?

Well it turns out that my keyboard was switching from QWERTY to DVORAK while in-game in the new version. So I deleted DVORAK and it works now!! But I still don't know what's up with the screen resolution. I'm using 1366x768 resolution.

That would do it

I have never heard of that resolution.  That's probably your problem.  You can either change the resolution you're using or you may be able to change dwarf Fortress

Did you try using Full Screen?  Change your Dwarf Fortress Init.txt file.  Here's a link that may or may not help.  http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Technical_tricks#Window

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Fortress Organization

8*8 rooms arranged 2*2 into districts.  3 wide hallways with Up/down stairways at every intersection.

Each 8*8 room can contain whatever.  It was chosen so that I could fit a 3*3 workshop partially surrounded by a stockpile.  This gives work to my haulers and lets my artisans not have to travel.

Ground level is dedicated to trading and military defense (barracks, hospital)

Above the trade district is my industrial district.  This contains stoneworking and woodworking.

below ground are my farms which are directly next the the river.  They can be safely flooded/irrigated using a system of doors, mechanisms, and levers.  I'm thinking of putting a statue garden next to the river as well, so I can flood it for entirely different reasons.

My Great Hall has a kitchen below it, as well as food stockpiles both prepared and unprepared.  The butchery, tanner, and leatherworker are also nearby.

I don't have bedrooms but a large communal dormitory,  If the dwarfs don't like it, they can go cry at the feet of one of my Gem-encrusted gold statues.

There's a few other things here and there as well.  A gym (manual pumps) to occupy spare dwarfs.  Little touches.

TL;DR.  I keep my Skilled workers as close to their materials as possible so that they can work fast.  Haulers are plentiful.

Are you using a QWERTY keyboard?

Are you using a weird resolution?

Did you try downloading the newest version?

283946 Means to use the numpad to scroll.  2 is up, 9 is page up, 3 is page down.

To look up and down you use < and >

Floors will separate all your levels unless you build channels, which remove the floor.

To allow your dwarves to go up and down you need staircases, you designate them using the designate menu.  You can also use ramps, but I don't recommend it.

If you want to avoid parties, make a meeting zone instead of a meeting hall.  This will stop people from partying in the dining room
