I think what elves get mad about is a dwarf cutting down a tree, dragging it inside, then whittling it down into one earring.

They don't get any happier when you tell that he'll eventually turn an entire tree into three earrings.

Yeah, 50% is where you should start from.

However, if you keep using the same broker, he'll get social skills from all the trades and thus will be able to trade better. 

I can now get away with going only slightly over their asking price.  I have so much stuff to trade away that I only both with the elves (so they don't bring only cloth).

It's based on how much wood you have, not how much you chop.  So get going on those bins and barrels.

You can quickly check for seeds by going to the (z) menu and the kitchen tab.  Scroll down until you find plump helmet seeds (you probably have 200 of them).  See if you have any other kinds of seeds directly above or below there.

Some guy actually made spider silk cloth.  He has a machine that milks the spiders 24 at a time.  I'm just amazed at it.

Try getting 3-wide corridors and setting a high traffic lane in the middle.

Otherwise it becomes impossible by way of the fact elves, your primary lumber supplier and guys with liaisons most likely to bite it, will bring worthless cloth rather than useful lumber.

Elves always bring lumber when you have very little (or none), as does everyone else.  Also, what do you mean by elf liaisons?  Have you ever actually gotten them?

Now I have a question.  Since it seems I have misunderstood some facts.  Can any of the following be butchered?

Animals killed by chance? (stray bolts, cave-ins)
Pets?
Tame animals killed by chance?
Sentient creatures? (goblins)
Vermin?

EDIT: Also, I changed the offending Wiki entry.  The Meat Industry one.

You need to create a sand gathering job.  Create a glass furnace and issue the collect sand order.  You need somebody with architecture.

People mostly use Glass Furnaces for sand collecting and Magma Glass Furnaces for making stuff.

The only problem is that it screws when building glass items via the Job Manager.

You're doing it wrong.  Military kills aren't butchered.  I'm not sure if there's a way to change that.

Get a dwarf and set his labor to hunting.  Also, give him a crossbow weapon and some leather armor too.

EDIT: let me elaborate a bit more.

press [v] and go the the dwarf you want hunting, press [p]ref then [l]abor and turn on hunting, you may as well turn everything else off too.  press [p]ref again then [ s ]oldiering and Hunting.  Select the crossbow, leather armor, and a shield.

If you don't have a crossbow he'll wrestle the animals if you have a crossbow but no bolts he'll bludgeon them to death with the crossbow.  The armor and shield is help alleviate the high casualty rate of hunters.   

Anyway, he'll kill an animal and return the kill the the butcher's shop.  Then the butcher shop will create a butcher animal job automatically (this can be disabled in the [ o ]rders menu, but don't do that).  The butcher will butcher the animal.  Then the tanner's shop will create a tan a hide job automatically (you have a tanner and a tanner's shop right?).

Make sure you have a refuse pile (I put mine outdoors) for the chunks, otherwise they'll cause miasma.  You may want a different refuse pile for the bones and skulls (bones are used for bolts and crossbows).  Also, a place for the fat.  Otherwise, your butcher shop will get cluttered and the corpses will rot before anything gets done.

I hope that that's not too much information for you.  Good job on using the wiki and telling us exactly what you're doing so it's easy to see what you're doing wrong.

It took me a little while to find it (hint: use Google to search a website for a specific term) but it's in the General Discussion area.  Which makes sense, once I think about it, he does want immediate feedback on any bugs.

Make sure you post on that thread if something goes wrong on that version.  It may even be faster.

Couldn't you just floor it off instead?

Who's your dwarf with the highest comedian stat?  Get him and a few others others, arm them with crossbows and have them train near the chasm.  It's not too big a problem if they die because batmen won't use crossbows.

I'd recommend re-installing.  Or possibly try one of the different versions.  They're still 40d but have various graphical changes.  I'm not sure which one is considered the best right now...

What's your population?  I think Sieges only show up once your population reaches 80.

Are you getting ambushes?  What about thieves?  If not then check you [c]civilization screen.
