Aside from that it would have to be the military in regards to the ease/lack of ease in throwing together a rapid response team with any degree of effectiveness. I'm not talking ambushes and sieges, I'm talking monkeys and angry goats. Used to be able to just activate my woodcuter and he'd pull some macaques apart, but now... yeah, I really need to read that tutorial.

Here's the specific section you want - actually becomes a near-instant way of handling threats with practice.

( sorry for kind of hogging the thread D: )

Still unknown whether the requirement is triggered by population, military size, or both. I've read varying reports.
Population. My military is zero-dwarves-strong and I can assign an arsenal dwarf.

One of the wiki's talk page had a comment about how until a user put five dwarves into the military he couldn't assign an arsenal dwarf despite his population. The 20-dwarves thing seems right, though, so I think I'm going to go change it to reflect that and if we get any more evidence otherwise we'll deal with it then.

Engineering corps! How handy they are indeed.

No, sorry, civilian dwarves are impossibly cowardly, even afraid of things on the other side of mountains. I believe if you remove their eyes in creature_standard.txt of the raws folder you can get them to ignore anything around them, but not sure what that does to the melee part of your military (your marksdwarves will be useless, though, that's for sure).

Hm. Perhaps you could try removing some of the old stockpile to try and get around this? Then the stuff on the floor will be forced into your barracks' stockpile.

I would hope that rather than getting a new nickname which doesn't at all prevent spoilers, we could simply just use the forum's spoiler command. New players who read "so when you dig too far into the magical clownite and open up the clown car, lots of clowns will pour out and shoot fireballs and kill you" will be able to see through that 'shroud.'

That being said, if a nickname is thrust upon the new Hell by popular use, I'd hope it would be a) new (not clowns again) and b) not Pokemon :P

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Pump stack questions

Pumps are insanely fast, rivaled only by the ocean. So yes, technically - though if the water feeding the pump doesn't refill as fast as the pump drains, you won't notice the effect... but get a pump feeding from the ocean or another pump and you'll wind up with a controlled flood pretty quickly.

in short m-p - define squads
you must have Arsenal Dwarf to equip soldiers
m-e - choose equipment (in range from "wear somesing" to "wear this artifact sword")
m-n - manage uniforms, m-e-U  - assign uniform to soldiers
m-s - Schedule for alerts (by default Innactive, Train) you can add alerts ( m-a, for example - patrol)
Militia commander/Captain assign not need to be assigned.
next you need barracks - define one and assign you squad to this barraks.
and last change alert level for squad (s-<squad letter>-t) to Train
ans small bag(or maybe not) go to m-s and change order from train(minimum 10) to train(minimum soldiers-1) or you recruts will just stay in barracks and die from dehidration

http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Military <-- now more detailed (and with the same information) than that guide. Should provide you with everything you need. And for reference, arsenal dwarves are not needed until your fort/military's certain size, and the uniforms page is not used to change dwarves' uniforms but to create templates which can be applied to dwarves or squads in the equipment tab.

According to the present screw pump page (which is rather sparse) it seems that pump stacks no longer transfer power vertically. You'll need axles and gears. It's horrid, I agree.

Diagonal movement should still apply. Nobody's tested but yet to hear otherwise and I don't believe Toady messed with that part of the code.

Oh,  one question I did have: arsenal dwarf. What? I don't have that  on my  noble screen. Even  when my military is working I  have  never seen anything about an arsenal dwarf. How do I get that slot open?

Taken from the page formerly linked (specifically, here):
Quote
In the early stages of your fort your dwarves will equip themselves, but once enough migrants have arrived your fortress will require an arsenal dwarf (designated in the nobles screen) to manage your armory. The arsenal dwarf serves the role of quartermaster; without him your dwarves will be unable to change their equipment. Once you have a dwarf selected, make sure to give him an office - like a manager, an arsenal dwarf will need to sign off on equipment changes before they can be made.

Note that if you don't have an option for arsenal dwarf, it just means your fort isn't big enough to need one yet. Dwarves will equip themselves until your fortress grows too large - just keep an eye on the nobles screen every time you get migrants, and assign an arsenal dwarf when you need one.

Still unknown whether the requirement is triggered by population, military size, or both. I've read varying reports.

Honestly, I had figured out most of the stuff in there before I read it, and I  was hoping it would solve my problems when I read  your post.

No offense but the military stuff is just beyond stupid right now [...]

Well, I dunno. Personally having spent the last fours hours reviewing the material and trying to do it for myself I've found that though I don't yet have the specific keys memory-mapped, I can do basically anything with the military I need them to. It's like one of those weird posters of a sea of coffee beans and one of them is a dude's head - when you get it, you'll shit bricks. Until then you may have to just wrestle with it for a while. Once you get used to the new system it really is the most confusing godsend ever.

Also, it would be appreciated if you didn't swear at other forumites - the new version's frustrating, yes, but manners aren't buggy.

You can create a squad without manually designating a Militia Commander - the game will automatically give the job to the leader of your first squad.

Aha! Thanks, I'll go add that. The wiki's bleeding from multiple metaphorical orifices a bit messy right now, but it's still the first release week. Hopefully this version's articles will come together over the course of the month.

I'm having real problems getting them to pick up the right equipment. Can someone walk me through that?

A lot of new info has been added here. That should have everything you need. Basically a uniform is a template; you can choose to make individual dwarves select individual pieces of equipment, or apply a full uniform to a single dwarf, or apply it to an entire squad (or multiple, at that). The link should tell you how.

The former link Elim posted has just been substantially updated and should help you out. The latter used to have more info but is a bit confusing, and all its worthwhile information has now been conglomerated into the main military page. Hopefully that makes things better! I'm planning on adding screenshots later to make things a bit simpler as well.

As a heads-up to those frustrated with the military: I've spent most of the night reformatting the wiki's military page, adding detail, explanation, and more key shortcuts. Should be easier to read than that messy guide that was posted as well. Hopefully it's easier to wrap your head around now - the military screen was a brick wall to me a few days ago, but after further investigation it's actually astoundingly versatile and goes from "omfgwtfbbq" to intuitive very quickly. You just need to grasp the basics.

Not quite done and there's still a bit missing like how the hell teaching works but I do hope that helps out in some manner.
