DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: January 13, 2010, 05:20:34 pm »
I've built all the functional levels of my obsidian tower, now it's time for ridiculous things. Going to set up massive numbers of cage traps to catch unsuspecting goblins and make an arena/butchery pit. I'm also thinking about a pool, gym, and spa (though how I'm going to get magma up high enough to make a spa I have no effing clue, I'm awful with pump stacks). Any other good ideas for what to do with the remaining 10 z-levels?

Flood the roof for an open-air park? Build a spacious free-roam zoo with creatures given their own natural habitats? Build a harbour? Build a golf course (goblin pows + hammer lord)? That's all off the top of my head.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: A little help here? Stuck wagons.
« on: January 13, 2010, 05:15:24 pm »
Wagons in the spring? Unless you've got something modded, only elves come in the spring, and they don't bring wagons. You also might want to be more specific. I'm assuming you mean the floating wagons glitch, but it's hard to tell.

Disregarding trade seasons, wagons don't fall down and collapse for some weird reason, which sounds like what you're referring to with the whole 'get them unstuck' thing. I can only think of one way to fix this, since you can't deconstruct trader caravans: Build a walkway over the wagon, then collapse it. This should deconstruct the wagon. You might want to use a tile editor to make floor tiles under the wagon so that it registers as well.

Uh, maybe blank out the guy's last name too? Or full name, even? Some people don't like having their names posted on the internet.

I'll play, but probably won't be trying to get uberpoints so much as having fun poking around in the new version and following others' findings here.

Okay, I've recovered from the weekend and should be back on a fairly frequent update schedule. Going to answer some posts, hooraaaaay.

That puny squire couldnt take all of my awsomeness
Ah, so you subscribe to the Greek school of apprenticeship?

Ew :P

I'll take a dwarf, make him one of the useless ones (ugh milker) and draft him into the military.
Put him into the same squad as Dwarf of Defeats squad and get him to follow him around, awed by the power he has displayed. A disciple I suppose. Works in the same way as a squire i suppose only hes not elite yet...

Gotcha. Any name requests? For now I'll go with Ferret until told otherwise.

Could I get in on this? I'll take that weaponsmith Shoveabbey, unless a male jeweler comes in the next wave of immigrants. Rename him Goraillion would you kindly.

Done, and personality screen next update.

I'd like to take a Dwarf, if I could.
Name: Kadzar
Gender: Male
Profession: Any

Ditto, put into military to be squire to one of the knights.

The powerful knight was not pleased to hear the news.

Hehehehe.

I'll have an update prooobably later tonight. I've got a bit of work to do, but it's about half-done.

To Martin et. all, we've got visualizer screenies! Went ahead and took a whole bunch, all contained in the below spoilers. Everything's in VF and Stonesense as both give great but different perspectives. Extremely image-heavy, be warned!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I didn't upload the folder of screenshots to the DFFD or anything, but all the image direct links are in the spoiler below.

Oh, if anyone could run visualizer on it, I still can't seem to get it working. In particular I'd like to see the front approach with the moat, the center atrium with all the windows and suspended platforms, and Morul's suite. Not sure what it does with clear glass windows + magma.

I was actually looking at it last night; didn't realize you weren't able to take a look yourself. I'm off to class, but I can post some when I'm back, if nobody else has by then.

ed- screenies in progress, will repost when done

But replacing the keyboard with mouse actions I am heavily against. I use the keyboard system way faster and more comfortably than I ever could with the mouse.
Well then you have nothing to worry about, because I've never seen anyone advocate that.

90% of the menus in dwarf fortress need to be replaced with mouse interfaces. Remembering every last key is literally impossible. Not joking, it's actually impossible. Maybe not for like two people. I'm talking overwhelming majority. Not that they will save a majority of newbies any struggling time.

Though, to be fair, he probably didn't mean replaced so much as adding mouse compatibility... but I haven't read much 'keyboard vs. mouse' stuff in general, so in case there were others who've argued for the keyboard setup to be replaced, I thought I'd cover my bases.

Hey, Martin, dunno if you've checked this yet, but Morul was born in 150 according to Legends mode - making him 61 when Lashedwines was founded. I don't know if toughness plays a factor in age, but either way, he probably doesn't have that long left before old age takes him - the guy's 114!

'Martin' Fortressmaster has become a legendary champion! Hail 'Martin' Fortressmaster!

Seriously, though - outstandingly impressive. I would doubt you have anything less but the highest respect from this entire board. Congrats on carrying out the best megaproject ever.

I don't know, the keyboard system was real hell for me for the first few weeks I played, but once you've used it enough, the keyboard system is incredibly fluid. There's a few workshops I'm still unfamiliar with (for example, I've never bothered with querns before) and I don't use the job screen or job manager much, but aside from those, everything's more or less mentally mapped out for me. If I were to use the mouse to designate digging tiles, for instance, I would have to actually move my hands away from where they are rested on the keyboard, making it much slower for me.

That being said, I can understand why adding mouse support is highly desired by some. But replacing the keyboard with mouse actions I am heavily against. I use the keyboard system way faster and more comfortably than I ever could with the mouse.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How high till a creature explodes on impact?
« on: January 12, 2010, 10:36:40 pm »
I've heard about the landing-on-a-creature-equals-no-splatter thing, but MrFake seems to be implying he drops goblins 20z down onto cold, hard, rock, and they get up and wander off. Which would be complete bullshit. Dropping enemies into a pit and dropping enemies onto creatures are completely different things.

63? Wow. What level is legendary?

15 - and Legendary +5 is 20. Wow indeed.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Obsidian Casting - How?
« on: January 12, 2010, 08:17:37 am »
I've always been a bit confused about this myself, having never really given it a shot and finding all explanations to be a bit confusing. I think I've started to wrap my head around it, though - someone's probably definitely going to have to correct me on this, but this is how I understand it to work:

- Build the walls of the cast as a square-based prism up as high as you like - easier to just mine it out later if you want fancy shapes. Extend the prism shell 1z higher than you want the cast to go.
- Build a bridge/group of bridges along the top z-level of the shell and pump magma up to it. Fill the bridge with enough magma to make it flooded 2/7 and 3/7 or so.
- Using a pump stack up to the second-highest z-level, pump water into the shell. Fill it up to 2/7 or 3/7 along the bottom level of the prism, then shut it off.
- Drop the bridges, colliding the magma with the water.
- Shut the bridges, prep more magma, and cover the lowest empty layer of the shell in water again, now on top of the obsidian walls at the bottom.

If I'm right about this, should work just fine so long as you're magma-safe. Just deconstruct afterwards.

DF pros: Am I close enough? I imagine there's a few ways of going about it.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Captured skeletal giant eagle
« on: January 12, 2010, 07:48:30 am »
Is it possible to chain the eagle, or would just use [buildingdestroyer] to destroy its own chain?  Because having a giant skeletal eagle chained to the peak of the mountain your fortress is in would be the ultimate in badass fortress accessories.

Not completely sure about this, but I beleive that untamed animals can't practically be chained. It may be possible to assign them to a chain (can't remember) but if that happened as soon as the skeleton is let out of its cage it would scare the dwarf which is bringing it to the chain. Fun then ensues.

It could be tested using [NOFEAR], but in practically terms, yeah, it's effectively impossible.
