Not sure where to ask this, so going here:

Will the next contest/competition have a large overpurposed goal aside from just being exceedingly challenging (somewhere there was discussion of 'empty wagon and no-skill dwarves dropped into hell')? I'm personally a fan of having some general goals to strive for (ie. first contest's 'bridge over water' focus), and I'd like to offer the idea of making the embark in a small region with excessive amounts of z-levels and challenging players to focus on tower-building.

4067
Stockpiles can cause this too - the stockpile's floor tiles won't be destroyed, but the ramp will be formed under it anyhow. Then SQUISH. But if you were doing lots of ramps at once, I would think this wasn't the issue. Unless you were designating multiple z-levels of ramps at once, which I doubt you were.

Some screenshots would be helpful in figuring this out.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How high till a creature explodes on impact?
« on: January 11, 2010, 09:48:40 pm »
I recall someone talking about a test they had done on this with orcs, though I'd never seen the test. Memory tells me that 6+ was guaranteed gibsplosion, but I wouldn't be surprised if Toady'd made creature size a factor in effects of drops. Perhaps a new study ought to be done.

4069
I wonder how long it'd take Morul to fire a few thousand bolts if he had a constant stream of targets or even just a Wild Horse with size 10,000 or so to shoot them at. With the infinite quiver trick, I'm guessing he'd be the dwarven equivalent of a gatling gun.

With this and [SPEED:0], he'd be the dwarven equivalent of a laser.

4070
Anyway, Morul is up to High Master Swordsdwarf just through sparring. If the 'higher skills = fewer injuries' during sparring theory is correct, it's possible he's going longer before hurting his opponent now. I noticed before they'd start sparring and almost instantly break it off even though nobody was seriously hurt. Morul appears to spar longer now, so maybe that's it.

Final stretch! Final stretch!

You should play the Chariots of Fire theme as Morul gets within 100-200 exp of his goal. This is exciting.

4071
Just curious, how old is my future champion? Need to know how long until he can start being productive. Also, can I have his current skill sheet if he's acquired anything. I sort of lost track on the fort's age, but I'm guessing he's a few years old?

Uh... he was born in the spring of 13 and it's midsummer 14, so... like, barely over a year. I do about an update a season on average and kind of just conglomerate the entire season's events together, so the in-fort time is rather slow. We're only 3 1/2 years into the fort as-is. Evidently I'm more story-oriented than fort-oriented.

Summary of his skills: Dabbling in all social skills and one or two broker skills. He's only been a child rather than a baby for a season or so, so it makes sense, I guess. It'll be a while before he can grab a sword.

I want Stonesense screenshots!

Due to lack of zoom-out function, there isn't much more to see in Stonesense than there used to be as of the cabin's completion, which was the last time I posted them. I'll toss in a VF shot in the next update, since the scale of the fort is rather expansive at this point, although the walls are still only 1z high right now.

By the way, Retro. Please, tell me - have you equipped soldiers and knights with waterskins and backpacks? Or you don't think it's a good idea? I'm just curious.

Right now I've got knights in plate mail since I don't have much of it, the others in chain mail, and everyone's got a shield. The whole military's got backpacks and carries food, and I did have Irwin make up some waterskins, but the military's been rather depressed (or at the least, not ecstatic, which is ideal) so a while ago I set them back to drinking booze. I figure I can put them back on water when there's another siege. With current defenses and a lack of need to leave said defenses, I can prep as much as I like before I commence a battle. Hopefully the next siege will be an epic showdown in the gardens. ...Hopefully by the next siege the gardens will actually have gardens.

Argh. Long night. Now I'm going to go pass out.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Captured skeletal giant eagle
« on: January 11, 2010, 07:51:35 am »
Can the eagle destroy stuff while it's flying? If not, then I could just have openable grates that drop the sacrifices there.

I know that enemies (disregarding arrows/bows) can't attack buildings on the z-level above them; not sure about the level below. This allows you to do things like building a bridge above a ramp and havig it be impenetreble, as the enemy can't attack it fro below. So I imagine a drop system would work just fine with a 1x1 bridge chute.

Now that it is actually Monday...
Happy birthday, Retro!
(Now can you give us an update? :D )

Sounds good!

Hey, DwarfOfDefeat – you wanted to see your warrior priestess kick some ass…?

---

4th Hematite, 14~

Ingish, one of our new recruits, is dead. I am told it was a sparring accident. More specifically, I am told it was a sparring accident by the swordsdwarf who he had been sparring against – Randall, the arrogant one. Poor Ingish’s throat had been cut, and he had choked on his own blood and suffocated in bed. Randall was not particularily apologetic, muttering that the novice fighter ‘had it coming.’ Sulvor had had his eye on Ingish to be his new squire. The powerful knight was not pleased to hear the news.

We will do our best to investigate, but it seems we may be forced to take Randall’s word on this. Still – I don’t trust her.

---

18th Hematite, 14~

We have marked the summer with blood. For once, that of our enemy’s.

Our encounter with the orcs last year was not without further repercussions. The humans, who had lost their grip on sanity and ran at the orc squadrons, had cost the Submerged Nation quite the profit. They arrived this morning with intent to violently cover their financial losses. It wasn’t really our fault that their merchants went nuts and threw themselves to the orcs, but it wasn’t a subject either side wanted to address.

Everyone was ordered inside, and we had the knights wait at the new gates to meet our guests. However, the humans did not come – instead, they waited atop the mountain, looking down at us. Perhaps they did not expect to see our outpost looking so strong. It was true, though – we had finished the outer walls, and though they were not yet high, the size of our domain was impressive.

I had Sirs Sulvor, Grath, Angron, and Randall (reluctantly knighted as we had nothing with which to prove his guilt) patrol the drawbridge, while Ubik and Sparta walked along our walls. We knew it would be months before the mountainhome caravan came, and with our farms there was no shortage of food to sustain us – and as the humans refused to leave their place on the mountain, there was hardly even reason to be concerned. However, one of the more religious recruits, Nalar, approached me with a proposition.

“Honourable scribe, I have heard the call of Rithol. She has filled me with a great light and given us strength against our enemies. Now is the time to strike, while the gods’ will is with us. Send us out.”

I was a bit puzzled. Though devotion in one’s god varied in intensity, no dwarf ever really gave a thought to holy influence on their day-to-day lives. This Nalar seemed to have some kind of fire behind her eyes – the same fire I’d seen when she had requested a mace be smelted for her with which to channel the power of the gods. I of course had the urge to turn her down, but there was a surprising amount of conviction in her voice. I reluctantly agreed, though Nalar herself was not yet even a knight.

The moment I had given her my answer she had turned and charged out the gate, the knights slightly behind her. This worried me – surely she didn’t intend on charging into battle without waiting on the rest of our forces?

She did. As she outpaced the encumbered knights, the humans noticed her coming and began to form up against her. There were fifteen of them and a horse, against one mediocre macedwarf. The knights were still too far behind to give assistance. The humans dogpiled on her, enveloping her with their entire force. I feared for the worst.

Moments later, it was over.

She had killed all of them without a scratch. Twelve humans, dead, before the knights could arrive – and three more managed to limp away before she could catch up. Sulvor, the first knight on the scene, found nothing waiting for him to kill.

I was about to call them in, both shocked and elated at such an astounding show of strength. It was then I saw that Nalar had not stopped moving. She was heading further along the mountains towards the eagle. The same zombie giant eagle that had haunted our nights since we had arrived three and a half years ago with its hollow cries in the dark.

The eagle rose, flapping its mighty rotten wings, seeing a challenger approaching. It began to fly upwards, hungry for its next meal, or perhaps simply its next battle. Nalar was charging towards it full speed, Sulvor just behind her calling out for her to stop.

Nalar dove off the mountain’s slope, mace swinging, colliding with the decomposing monster mid-air. A pained cry echoed down across the mountain as the creature’s entire left side flew over the rocky face.

The two fell to the ground, the eagle no longer able to stay afloat. With a crash, they hit a boulder, and Nalar was covered by the eagle’s corpse. Sulvor shouted out, trying to get the infectious carcass off of her beforre she suffocated or got sick. He pushed the beast’s body to the side with a mighty push, and saw Nalar… perfectly okay, mace at her side.

“I have Rithol’s strength. Such a beast poses no threat to the might of one who serves a god.” She had won, completely unharmed. She wasn’t even stunned.

The rest of the knights arrived to see the aftermath of the battle: corpses everywhere, including the eagle’s. They slowed, then stopped, and we silent. After a moment, Angron muttered, “That’s my girl.”

The knights returned to the cabin for some mead. Nalar spent the rest of the day running around the mountains slaughtering undead beasts along the mountainside. Nobody questioned her safety.

Maybe there is something to this religious stuff.

(taken before she went and killed like three zombie hoary marmots and some skeletal goats)

---

Yeah. Uh. I accidentally put Nalar into Sulvor’s squad without noticing, and with her speed of Perfectly Agile she arrived before anyone else. And though I didn’t get a screenshot of it (it slipped my mind in the excitement), she was immediately surrounded on all sides (including in her own square) by all 15 human swordsmen and the horse. And she slaughtered them without a scratch. Plus the eagle; literally, she actually dove off the mountain at it—it was airborne, then suddenly they were both a z-level down, she was stunned by the fall, and it was missing its left side from the hip down. Moments later it bled out. I only wish I had fed it some migrants so it would’ve had a name.

Sorry about Ingish, TheHunger - sparring's rough. Feel free to grab another dwarf, though! I've got like 59 now due to insane migration waves.

Also how bad are my injuries? Any permanent damage?

Naaah. Nobody's had brain or spinal damage, which I'm rather nervous about, so all the sparring wounds (and everyone has gotten a few sparring wounds; obsidian swords are damned sharp) heal decently quickly.

If you're thinking of doing the farming idea, I'd suggest giving each house a basement for their farm if you want to grow some subterranean food. I think it would be more realistic if each family lived inside of a single house, you could expand it or add a second floor when the family grows.

No need for underground farming - we is a castledwelling! I'm gonna try and gete each family their own hovel, though, and actually see if I can get rooms for the kids and stuff like that. Once the drymoat's done (in the works) the next step is tearing down the temporary residences and building some permanent housing.

Sorry all if this weekend's updates have been a bit sloppy; as Grath noted, it's my birthday, and I've barely been sober since Friday afternoon. I actually just got back home like an hour ago. Time to go pass out for like a day or two.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Smoothing a Mountain
« on: January 10, 2010, 09:00:40 pm »
Well, you can't smooth ramps, but I think you can smooth the walls behind ramps. So I suppose yeah, you could. And engrave them, too!

4075
Are you planning on having the hovels scattered around or in uniform rows with small streets outside of them?

By the way, how serious were the bolts we took to the chest?

I dunno yet. I suppose I might attempt some type of uniformity. Maybe only a vague form of it. Incidentally, it could be interesting to have one person per hovelly househould have farming assigned and each house have a farm, making it even more feudalistic! But that's a spontaneous thought to consider in a few years.

Bolts weren't all to the chest, but I forgot the individual wounds and it seemed to fit. You were in bed for a few weeks, Grath was wounded but still on duty, and Angron took most of the season, but he's gotten better. Kind of a poor unveiling of Mightygrips' might.

Build a contained arena with an airlock antrance and allow it to fly free within. Then send in dwarves who are not worthy to meet their fate at the hands of Nounverbed!

I figured letting him get kidnapped would save me the trouble of cleaning up his corpse :/

Despite the fact that this thread got necro'd out of nowhere, this is a great quote.

Sorry, not a lot of images this time. Mostly just worked on the fort while getting some story stuff up.

27th Slate, 14~

It is getting difficult to put on a smile each morning. Or each night, for that matter. Mightygrips continues to grow, yet I feel as if I’m withering away.

We’ve had another influx of migrants that changed everything. The nineteen of them showed up confused, asking who was in charge. “I am,” replied Bodark assertively. I did my best not to show my discomfort. After all, I had been selected as the expedition’s leader by that bastard from the mountainhome, Melbil. But it’s three years gone, and what leadership I had has transcended to pure authority - yes, my job instructions will be followed, but nobody looks to me for answers. All for the better, I suppose. I don’t look to myself for answers either. Still, I couldn’t help but be a bit jealous.

“Ah, so you’re the king’s steward, eh?” commented one of the new members of our party, Logem Newflag. I shared a somewhat confused glance with Bodark, one of the few times we’ve locked eyes in the last few months.

“Well, I… suppose,” he said. And that was that. Now that Bodark was officially in a position of authority, he needed his own room as well. We’ve set him up above the stables, in some of the unused rooms there. …Sam’s there too. They married a few weeks ago, without much ceremony. Rykue was best man. I wasn’t invited.

Despite all the progress on the castle, I haven’t been able to shake this bitter funk I’ve been in. The elves came to trade, but instead of bantering I just gave them some goods and walked off with barely a word. Even the one that continues to wear the skull hat didn’t get me to crack a smile. I’m finding myself lashing out more than I’ve intended to, and I accidentally snapped at Jyrvus the other day when he came asking about work. He’s the closest thing to I have to a friend – I don’t think what I was thinking lashing out at him. He’s done more than his share of work, too, having dug out half the upcoming moat on his own. He’s got an apprentice now, Sazir, who’s getting good.

The populace seems to share my poorly-contained anger. We saw two goblin thieves and trying to sneak into the fort… and all the dwarves around them dropped what they were doing and tore them to shreds. It was somewhat horriffic to see, but not so much that I didn’t wish I could’ve joined in.

The goblins have certainly begun to take note of us. A horde of them tried to ambush us while we were expanding our walls. Our knights, Sirs Sulvor, Grath, and now Angron, were nearby, but had little defense against the crossbow-wielding ones. They all took at least one bolt to the chest before they were finally taken down, leaving Sulvor and Grath injured and Angron in bed. They missed one, though, a wrestler making his way for the children who were idling in the yard. I tell myself I intervened for their sake, but had they been there or not I might’ve done the same. All my pent-up anger was released in one rush. Tendons were severed; limbs became limp and... just came off, really. Before the goblin’s eyes went glazed, there was this despairing, pained look in them. It was the kind of look I imagined Urdim had when the orcs had descended upon him, just meters away from safety. I stopped, and looked at the ground, littered with chunks of innards. Looked at my hands, like bloody paintbrushes. Looked around me at my workers, all silent, staring, shocked.

“What?!” I asked, somewhat waveringly. “Don’t you have better things to do?!”

Nobody moved for a few moments, then they slowly continued along their way, eyeing me nervously. I stood there alone with the bloodied cadaver. Static in a sea of flowing dynamos. Eventually I shuffled to a pond and washed my hands. It took two hours before I thought they were clean enough.

---

Okay, I really focused on story progression there, so I’m just going to cram in a ‘here’s what’s going on’ bit in here.

Walls are looking great; I’m trying to rush to get a single, thin 1-z high barrier up for defense. Then I can relax and work on thickening them and starting to build up. Also, remember how the jungle used to have trees? No more! Yay for clear-cutting.

Doom got a secretive mood and actually used a fair amount of stuff in on her silly earring, including billon and trifle pewter bars as I forbid the other types when I saw she was going for bar storage. It’s pretty nice, at $74400, but it’s got a picture of Tomescinder, the hatch cover on it. Tomescinder has a picture of the first hatch cover on it. Yeesh.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Here’s Kriega, Ingish, and Gale’s personality info. 'Major injuries' are a reference to sparring, since their sparring partners wield obsidian swords. There are a lot of 'Rest' messages, even with armour :\

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Nalar and Sir Angron are dating now. Wooooo, military couple. Speaking of couples, Rykue and Gutendorf had another kid, a girl. That’s two children and one baby, as we had a child immigrate and the first baby grew up.

After that rather poor showing when the goblins ambushed, I’m a little worried about what will happen during the next orc siege, which is almost certain to be very early on this winter (I paused just at ‘it is now summer’). Admittedly, I had three melee soldiers go up against seven crossbowgobs, but even with my full military I don’t think I can take down an orc squad yet. Maybe if I have the archers cover them at the same time. Dunno. I’ll need a big ammo stockpile, at least.

'Steward' is what I'm calling the mayor... which, yes, is Bodark. Huzzah!

Quick migrant list:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Legendary list is now up to 12 and includes Sazir the immigrant miner and Doom via her artifact work. I admit, I kind of wish I'd changed the init to have artifacts off when I started - I kind of wanted to build up wealth purely through continued effort. According to Dwarf Therapist, Ubik’s nearly a champion archer, Sulvor’s approaching champion swordsdwarf, and Quinn (with 7 strength, 6 agility, and 3 toughness) has almost got his third legendary skill in appraisal.

Aaaand we’ve got a new chapter title: Of Knights and Days. I’ve updated the first post to contain links to the first story post and this one – the first segment has been titled ‘The Depressed Guild of Misery,’ after the expedition’s name. Incidentally, the best I could come up with for this update title in my notes is 'Quinn is unhappy.’

If she's still available, I'll take the female dwarf named Controlinked. Dub her Kriega and make her a mechanic, if the position is not already taken. If not, into the army with her.

Done, and personality sheet is a bit higher up in the post.

Put something like this:
<image>
Thats my tavern from the fort I'm making, with the booze stockpile placed under the bar (See the ramp-hole?) and 6x5 upstairs bedrooms for minor nobles (Or richer dwarves when dwarf economy comes). Mine is 3 z-levels tall right now. How tall can you get yours? :D

I've got different plans for Mightygrips. Believe me, if I wanted to build a big megaconstruction, I would. Mightygrips is progressing intentionally slow mostly for writing reasons.

Eh Stonesense not allowed? I can understand disallowing the use of the hidden tile revealing part of it, and there may be little use for it... but sometimes I like to see how my fort looks outside of ASCII.

IIRC, 'Stonesense' = isometric visualizer, 'Stone Sense' = tile-revealing utility.

4080
Thanks, it would be best if it was Thusest if there are no external gods.
Does my guy worship Thusest? Because that would be convinient.

He worships Rithol, unfortunately. But I can try and use DC to change that... or, barring that, just ignore his true preference for story purposes.

I'll take Ingish Brushedfence and add him to your swordsdwarf corps. Current name is fine if it's fine with you, and feel free to address why someone with his personality traits would enlist in the military, or just ignore that situation altogether.

Cool, I'll post the personality page next update.

I had no time to read all this time, but now i've read a whole story at once. It's awesome!
And I'm really proud of my sharpshooting dwarf =)

Ubik's actually a Grand Master marksdwarf, significantly higher level than Sparta. But since I've removed the archery ranges (elite military units may only level through combat! wahaha) she won't be a champion until the next siege.

I have a challenge for you, oh mighty castle builder. :) I was thinking about what might be interesting to see in a DF castle, and for some reason the word 'arch' came into my head. I thought it might be impressive to build a great archway for the main gate, between guardtowers or whatnot. I don't expect this to be smoothly round, but it should be able to look awesome if you spread it out a bit both width and z levels.

I was actually thinking about doing something like that! I like building things that span z-levels as well - I try to gear my constructions towards looking good in visualizers. For an example of previous stuff I've worked on, check this out (still in-progress, technically).

And yeah, I suppose I can life without having him gain crossbow skills, if he's comming into his own as a tanner and leatherworker. It is your story after all. :) and I've been lucky enough to be mentioned more than once in it. My nudge was mostly to make sure you saw it.

Irwin's a lot of fun to write because I can mention him lightly here and there very easily without spending a lot of time on him, so he becomes familiar to readers very quickly. And of course, he has an army of unassigned war animals that follow him around, so if it comes down to that he's capable of killing the crap out of enemies (albeit not personally).

Woah, are all the walls gonna go that far out? The one you've built almost hits the edge of the map.

Yup! The far edge of the guard tower walls are the 6th tile out from the edge, and the regular walls are I think the 9th tile out - which gives me just enough room for a kickin' moat! Yeah, Mightygrips is going to DOMINATE the landscape when I'm done with this. Part of the reason for embarking on a mountain was for massive z-level building.

Might be able to crank out an update tonight, I dunno. It's a really busy weekend for me. Might get one done at like 3 or 4 am if I can't sleep. Plus I need to think of a new 'chapter name' or whatever.

Great to see the interest in the story! I'm having lots of fun writing it.
