DF General Discussion / Re: Do you ever dream about Dwarf Fortress?
« on: September 27, 2010, 06:10:36 am »
I have a recurring dream of climbing down a cave system, then about z-50, horrible things that are decidedly NOT ASCII come out of the walls and paint the cavern red.

Adamantine, already? No good will come of this. . .

This fort sounds a lot like one I made recently, wouldn't mind playing.

I'd take the leader. Name: Exilo.

My turn will probably take less then 24 hours, my play sessions for DF generally last most of the day, any day.

This is my first succession, I should add. Expect my updates to involve lots of angst and noble-hating.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Why embark in 1050?
« on: September 05, 2010, 09:37:58 am »
Has anyone ever tried embarking in the year 10000? I have. Every civ was extinct, adventure mode was bugged (the game crashed if you tried to make one), and fortress mode was pretty awesome. There was something about being the absolute final bastion of sentient society anywhere on the planet that was immensely satisfying.

DF Gameplay Questions / Tamed Gremlins act exactly like dwarves?
« on: September 04, 2010, 04:40:48 pm »
In my latest modding craze, I went through the entity file and gave dwarves the ability to use any pets of any kind (evil, good, savage, etc), and embarked with a fair selections of exotic pets, including six gremlins.

The first thing I noticed was that the gremlins (all with adequate ambusher) were hunters, and that they had 'labor' options. I havn't had the chance to try these out yet, but if I enable a gremlin to, say, be a mason, will he use a mason's workshop and gain skills as a mason?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Lame artifacts!
« on: September 01, 2010, 07:06:31 am »
After several years of things like felsite earrings and oaken floodgates, I got rather lucky. First a jeweler went fey and made a ruby table worth nearly a million dwarven coins, then a blacksmith went fey and made an adamantine shield worth nearly ten million. I stopped sighing whenever dwarves went moody after that.

Dear Urist McBurntArse

Please stop channeling out magma squares in such a way you get stuck on the last one, then channel it out under your feet. An amusing feat it may be, but your friends are now all upset about you and I now need to train another legendary miner, you idiot.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How good is glass for traps?
« on: August 31, 2010, 03:39:14 pm »
Is there a way to make glass horrible against armor, but lethal to anyone in anything weaker then chainmail? Glass does shatter easily, but the edge it can take should make it sheer through stuff like leather without even slowing down.

DF General Discussion / Re: A Dwarf Fortress Film?

Forget the movies, Dwarf Fortress would make a much better series. Rated +18 and in the comedy section.

I want to see the option to play as an adventurer and in fortress mode on the same world.

DF Bug Reports / Re: [0.31.01] Military forces are just to weak
« on: August 31, 2010, 10:16:40 am »
After watching an untained dwarf punch a forgotten beast to death in three hits, then go on a genocide spree against the polar bears in the area, I don't think unarmed combat is underpowered in any way. Strength just seems to rule all. With enough training (and anti-skill-decay editing), a wrestler can twist the limbs off a bronze colossus, they just need a lot more of it then any other class.

DF General Discussion / Re: Worst... nobles... POSSIBLE!
« on: August 30, 2010, 09:23:35 am »
I once had a count demanding nickel silver items, slade items and lay pewter items. He then proceeded to lock three of my best craftsdwarves in cages and tantrumed at the state of his rooms. So I built him a new set of rooms, made of wood, over a lava pit, and connected it by a single line of tiles. Then I deconstructed the end. The swine actually lasted long enough to throw another tantrum at the bottom of the lava pit.

EDIT: Oh, my dwarves are still locked in cages in my animal stockpile. How do I get them out?

DF General Discussion / Re: Dreaming in ASCII
« on: August 30, 2010, 09:18:13 am »
I had a dream in ASCII a few days ago. I can't remember the content, but it involved a cave covered entirely in blood (or maybe just red rock) and several demons.

DF General Discussion / Re: Adopting the locals...

I caught a tigerman cub recently, sadly I didn't know about their need for food, so she starved to death. I felt so bad that I exited DF and edited the save raw so they didn't need food or drink, then reloaded the game from the previous season. I got a warm and fuzzy feeling from that.

You miss my point. I do this because I enjoy doing it. Spending an hour building up an extremely pretty-looking yet deadly set of defences is what I like. Killing things quick & dirty holds no interest for me, as there are so many easy, yet very boring ways to do so. A multi-tiered fortress which took thousands of jobs to build is just more satisfying and gives a feeling of personal accomplishment.
