I like it except for when you go up, the animation effect makes me sick.

DF General Discussion / Re: Should game contain pregenerated world?

Just cherry pick a small world seed that actually generates something good and include it as a menu option.

I hate big downloads.

I'd like to see entire goblin raids of legendary goblins, and make them always come with a few trolls, is this possible to implement?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: My dwarves are too happy

well i've destroyed all masterworks and a dozen artifacts, dumped all food and alcohol, spread miasma through the halls, removed all buildings, locked all doors to rooms with smoothed walls, carved up all engravings, and the only dwarf who cares is a boyer who through a 30 second tantrum, knocked over a fishery, walked through (but didn't destroy) a trade depot, and sat in the meeting area zone until it ended.

Happiest dwarf, i killed her husband and child, happiness is at 1200 according to dwarf therapist :(

I don't think those numbers are right.. when i've used dwarf therapist my dwarves are usually so happy in the 300-700 range. The lowest i've ever seen a dwarf in my fortress during normal play was 80.

How would you suggest fortress design in general to produce unhappy dwarves?

a dozen bins of masterwork stonecrafts into the lava and my stonecrafters are still esctatic :(

trying to destroy the artifacts but its more difficult

deaths don't seem to faze my dwarfs - even spouses and children deaths don't even get them below esctatic

My dwarfs are all friends anyway, i can never find work for them all, they just pour in waves of 30-40 at a time

done all that, vermin cage they just try and adopt everything (or eat it), and the stairwell miasma didn't work. Got a dragon in my main hallway but he seems to not breath fire anymore now that he's tamed, and didn't set anyone on fire anyway.

maybe there is something i could mod that make them unhappier?

DF Gameplay Questions / My dwarves are too happy
« on: November 02, 2009, 08:40:28 am »
I'm about ready to give up on my dwarves, because they never do anything fun. it seems like no matter how many dwarves die, how many of them are injured, or how many caveins i have, they are all escatic. Recently I was thrilled to have my first dwarf in three years go berserk, a legendary miner! (he was escatic until his mood failed due to not having a leg and taking forever to get the compoenents) but he was killed by his own pet mule before he could kill anyone or even before I could activate my military.

So I am bored by my dwarves, is there anything I can do to make them more moody? I even have put them in one by one beds underneath my workshops so they will get woke up when they sleep but all they want to do is talk about how awesome the legendary dining hall is.

You can't pump water *out* of the same z-level of the pump?

try digging channels under the input square of each pump, you may need to rebuild the pumps

Personally I don't care about functionality. Masterwork Steel Weapons/whatever are badass enough. Artifacts are mostly there for the cool stories, and I get cooler stories with bigger artifacts. instead of "oh wow another random encrusted/woven image/whatever item with no story"

Anyway I got another moody metalsmith dwarf, fortunately I had deconstructed all my smithing buildings in preperation for this. I found a few neat things:

* Dwarf will only collect a lot of the original item type (in this case, metal bars). He will only collect the correct number of other items.

* Dwarf will only collect indoor items.

* I was able to rotate through the items one at a time by switching between 'soldiers go outdoors' and 'everyone goes outdoors'. When no items were indoors or all dwarves were ordered indoors, dwarf stopped on his shop and waited.

* switching between 'soldiers can go outdoors', waiting a few ticks, and switching back to 'dwarfs can go outdoors' progressed item one at a time.

*letting dwarfs go outside and bring in more items from the supply depot meant that the dwarf collected them when i switched back to 'soldiers can go outdoors' I'm not sure if this is because it went 'metal rock metal' or if it just switched back to metal by itself?

Yeah, it was still just a zinc crossbow.

Honestly I prefer big artifacts (about a dozen or so items), because they look better. I find it really annoying when I get artifacts made out of a single item, because they're not interesting at all.

I'd just like to report that I had this happen with metal bars instead of stone...  he ended up creating a nickel crossbow out of about a dozen bars before i removed the stay outdoors command. I would have let it run but this is a new fort and I haven't smelted many bars yet.

In this case the metalsmiths' forge itself was on the surface. He used all of the bars i had underground and i think took some from the caravan on the surface that I hadn't moved to my stockpile yet.

DF Gameplay Questions / Giant Cave Swallow - teleporting?
« on: October 29, 2009, 09:59:40 am »
I recently had my fort decimated by a giant cave swallow. It killed half a dozen of my dwarves, including three legendaries and marksmen.

That's not what concerns me.

what is concerning is that I walled off the chasm beforehand so that nothing could get out. It's kind of got an overhanging ceiling - so that the chasm inside says dark, everywhere there was light, i built a wall.

Then I built a tunnel into the side and filled it up with cage traps. It would have had to fly through 11 cage traps to get out that way.

So I went away from the computer a bit and when I came back there was this named giant cave swallow thatI thought belonged in my chasm - there was one in there when i started but now there isn't.

So I'm wondering if I'm missing something? do giant cave swallows have the ability to be immune to traps? can they fly up diagonally? Or is there something else I am missing?
