DF General Discussion / Re: DF snail pace, how much expansion is possible?
« on: December 24, 2009, 12:40:11 am »
It would be cool if he could open source the pathfinding like he did with the graphics, let the math geeks fight it out over the optimum way for dwarf A to get from location B to Beer stockpile C.

I understand his opposition to open sourcing anything though, it's his baby and he should have whatever say he wants in it.

...we have an Emergency Rabbuck Release System.  We can unleash forty rabbucks into the front hall with a pull of the lever.

...wow.

Headshoots had something like this with cats, I'm pretty sure one of the later administrators accidentally pulled it tying to unleash WEAPON.

Has this happened to anyone else? I can't create new fortresses, hell, I can barely look at current ones thanks to Dev Now and the upcoming release. I start playing and immediately start thinking of Cool Feature X.

The only one I can get excited about is the succession game I'm in at the moment. And even that will be fleeting once my turn has come and passed.

No love for The Gimp? I can't stand photoshop but love the gimp.

Back on the subject at hand though. If we can't tame the GCS, then why do we want it? Also, it's not like gcs silk items do us any good, there's no one to trade it to.

140
Looking at the fortress entrance, we could probably replace the first line of stone traps with cage traps. But on closer inspection, we should probably remove the first and second lines. Put cage traps where the second line was, and drawbridge up the first, maybe over a channel.

Looking at the pictures, and using the rabbuck pit as a point of reference, it looks like nothing is where the ideal channel location would be. The bridge should probably be kept sealed at all times, unless we need wood. And even then, with a fort this fragile, we should probably try and tower cap farm ASAP.

141
Capturing the GCS would likely not be wise. We won't have a dungeon master to tame it, and so long as we avoid it's area, it'll take care of some of those nasty critters for us.

Thank you, Nobody1225. You've set the bar awfully high, I'll have my work cut out for me to try and live up to your example.

We should probably get some armor cranked out for me and Skaltum (WE R MARRIED, LULZ) fairly soon, even if it is just rabbuck leather and bone. DeKaFu has a very good point, until we get steel armor, and we should only use steel, there should be no sparring, only hiding.

Good solid Steel plate with a layer of chain beneath it. Sparring injuries become absurdly rare at that point. It's too bad there are no elves to buy crap wood weapons from, but if we come across any silver, we should put it to that use.

It's truly odd to think of your Dwarves as so valuable. I know most DF players don't bat an eye at losing 20, quite a paradigm shift.

BTW, are there any shell producing animals left? Things might get iffy without it.

Awww, I coulda taken him!

Very nice writing, I got a good feeling about this, especially with the start you've given us. Kept me on the edge of my seat. Very interesting to see what happens when one of us tries to take on the little critter. One thing though, where are the pictures of the fortress proper?

Also some advice for the next person to take over, whoever gets the girl, KEEP THEM ALIVE. Dwarves will not remarry when their spouse dies. This could doom us all!

Any ways, am I going to be added to the turn roster, or are you only doing a few at a time? (Like what they did with headshoots towards the middle.)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Does rain put out fires?

Or to be less rude, no, it does not. Only submersing an object in water will put it out.

In the future, I recommend the wiki ( http://dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Main_Page ) or using the search function to avoid rudeness.

I think one of the ones I saw in Toady's raw dump was a deep crow.

Sign me up and add me to the turn roster!

I'll take Shem as well. I don't particularly care about skills, whatever we need to survive, we should take. When you do name him, lop off the Sir part. I don't think nobility and knighthood means much anymore.

This will be glorious, one way or the other.

Drowned in beer.

Considering many of the other causes of death in DF, this one is not so bad.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Engineering a trap for nobles

My favorite method involves a lever attached to nothing that is set to pull on repeat for the noble. A Locked Door, and a ballista firing through a fortification into the one tile lever room. Space efficient, quick, and 100% effective.

I wonder if it's possible to change the adamantine message so it begins with, "Good news, everyone!"

Yep, just like Cacame, he's an immortal, though significantly less badass than the Elf King (sorry mate).

Having rulers from other races are a little screwy though, in order to use him properly when he shows up, you'll have to change a setting using Dwarf Companion. Otherwise, he'll just stay in one spot until eaten.

Edit: On the subject of human rulers. I think it far less possible to acquire one, as short lived as they are.
