DF General Discussion / Re: Unexplainable game/system slowdown
« on: February 23, 2010, 01:50:13 pm »
Generally, a graphics card that's beginning to fail will work fine aso long as it isn't being taxed. I had one about ten years ago that only failed on one or two games.

Very true, I had an ATI Radeon 1900 xt die a slow heat death with similar symptoms. So far, I agree with the heat being the big issue, however, it still could be an issue relating to the malware that was on your pc. It's possible for malware to permanently damage your machine to the point where only a reinstall will fix it, even if your antivirus had cleaned it.

But lets just stick with the heat for now. You said your brother had a similar machine, could you perhaps borrow his card or remove yours and switch to an onboard card? If you can't, see if you're still under warranty and can get a replacement.

- Goblins are twisted elves, pretty much like the Tolkein version. They're not primitive green chappies. They're primitive green ELVES. With red eyes.

I object to your use of the word "primitive" to describe dwarf fortress goblins. I would not call a species primitive that manages to erect towers made of cast and carved obsidian. Nor would I call a species primitive that manages to come clad in strong armor forged from from iron, wielding deadly iron weapons. Theyre probably on or near the same level with humans in terms of technology.

The elves are the primitive one. They don't work metal, they don't work stone, they don't even have a roof over their heads unless they've been conquered by another species.

Does your army wear chain underneath their plate? If so, there's something. You could also gear out your hunters with quality armors.

Can't you make them act normal via Dwarf Companion?

BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!
SKULLS FOR THE SKULL THRONE!

Gee, guys, don't you think the Blood God has enough blood already? He's always getting it, he probably has big rooms with nothing but extra blood. And being the Blood God, he probably has the ability to get as much blood as he wants anyway!

Why don't we get him a nice tea cozy? I bet he doesn't have many of them, so it'll be all the more special!

BURN HIM!

HIS SKULL FOR THE THRONE, HIS BLOOD FOR THE GOD!

BREAK HIS BACK! MAIM! KILL! BURN!

First, they'll make annoying mandates and demands.

Then they'll likely wander into some unsafe area and have an "unfortunate accident."

Finally, if Toady has been an especially cruel designer, Fun from above will occur.

This succession game might be of interest to you.

http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=46448.0

It's an Age of Death game, and includes the raws used to create an Age of Death world.

Age of Death = No civilizations at all.

In my experience, getting the native version to work on a 64 bit install is incredibly dodgy. I can't speak for the 32 bit installs, the only one I have is my Eee PC and playing DF on it has to be like pulling teeth.

Mine is mostly perplexed at how I can make sense of the Ascii graphics. She seemed to like the Visual fortress and Stone Sense visualizers though.

Of course, we are talking about a girl who plays DnD and spends nearly all her free time reading fantasy books. So I think I'm safe.

The work you did on the tower was amazing. Anyone who has not loaded up the save recently should go and have a look.

Less than perfect English is fine, but please post pictures. Text only updates bother me a bit.

Also, 4 year turns are fine with me. With the new version underway, we need to light a fire under this succession game.

It'll still take some time, Irritating when you have other things you want to do as overseer instead of cleaning. It took forever to get the forges, specifically the stockpiles, all cleared out.

On the subject of cleaning, we may need to spend a couple seasons doing just that. The place is looking a little untidy.

This. This is why I always arrange Ballista Accidents. The cleanup and setup are much easier, it also works 100% of the time and trains the siege operators.
