Hopped into generating your own world, and maaaan!
You can pick how many titans and demons you want, which i all pulled to the max (1000) and of course, z-level aboveground, wooo!

After also making my small world filled with terrifying and removing all titan requirements to wait to attack, I embarked with some biters and doctors and checked around.

250+ z-levels on a 4x4 and still 100 fps, imagine my surprise!
Of course, the first thing i did was dig downwards, and not a few minutes later, I hit a cavern! Sadly since this isn't merged i couldn't zoom out so I couldn't get a good overview, but damn!

The military screen is a bit confusing, so I couldn't draft my dwarves to fight the wandering skeleton carp and the titans.

I'll wait for the merge and some tilesets, and then have some more FUN.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Where do I power my pump stack
« on: March 16, 2010, 05:22:47 am »
It should be noted that the top level of pumps won't work, because those pumps have nowhere to pump TO.  You may end up having to make it asymmetrical after all, if you really want magma up there.

...also, what's with the cats?

Good call! I kind of made that level on a whim, and i liked the idea of having a pathway. A nice solution would be to only have a left/right pathway, instead of a full circle.

About the cats, that's cause one female cat got stuck. I will have to breach the top part of the dome for a bit, but that would result in a wave of cats entering the rest of the fort. I'm thinking of removing the legs of cats in the raw for a bit.

Dummy pumps, brilliant!

And what Necro said is correct. I originally wanted to alternate intake per z-level to middle , and then top/bottom, but there were problems I can't recall anymore. I think 2 pump stacks is actually overkill, but i like symmetrical-ness.
Time to attempt Dummy pump!

@sphalerite,

Nice hint. I have a plan I want to test.

EDIT: Success! With a few gears and a pump stack it seems to work! Sadly I can only power one pump stack at the moment, but that's temporarily. Anyway, thanks guys!

DF Gameplay Questions / Where do I power my pump stack
« on: March 15, 2010, 11:51:29 am »
I've been working on making a pump stack, And after finishing it, I wanted to test it, resulting in a rather hilarious magma flood.

Now, a savescum later, I have looked for a safe way to power my pump stack, but I can't think of a way.

The map/example is here:
http://mkv25.net/dfma/map-8252-cradlewind

The "pipe" in the middle will be completely submerged in magma in the end. I cannot connect the pump stacks to power on the bottom or top. Any dwarfy ideas?

Also, who here wants semi- transparent glass? I've got a few ideas brewing to make it happen, and am trying to decide how to start off my next tile update.
I do! I originally thought the dome would be transparent, so i would love if it was possible!

Have lave constantly flowing over it, covering it. Who wouldn't want to be a a room watching lava?

Yeah! That was the original plan, Magma flowing from the top downwards, then at the bottom there would be floor grates to catch the magma. I also wanted water to flow from the back(right) kind of to the front(left), caught by grates, and starting at the back again. But water flows away form the edges, so that wouldn't work. I'm now considering to either turn it around, aka water flowing from the top, and magmawaves of doom, but it just doesn't seem the same.

So I'm thinking of just doing all magma, although the thought came into my mind to make a second smaller dome inside the dome, and to fill the between space with water. But then you cant enjoy the magma flowing from the outside. so I would have to make a third dome so you can walk in the middle, on the left being green glass walls of magma, and on the right being green glass walls of water. Oh god, I was hoping that if I went on a 1x1 map i wouldn't have much room for craziness. I must do this!

I skimmed about the wiki, but I didn't really understand it. But now you say you have to dig a channel into a aquifer it all makes sense.

The ocean was just a example, I'm planning something on a smaller scale.

EDIT: a new problem has arisen! A long time ago I have dug out some aquifer walls to make my "pool" fill quickly, see picture

Now, I want to empty this pool by means of "stopping" the aquifers I dug a long time ago. I checked the wiki, but the walls aren't smoothable so i cant stop it with that. Anyone has ideas to empty this pool?

I've read on the forums a while ago about someone draining a ocean into a aquifer tile. I am wondering how to do this. Anyone had some experience with this?

Magma does not leave the map, as shown in a example on the fma as soon as I recall.

do it
If you hook up some floodgates (everything HAS to be bauxite or raw adamantine) to a lever. And put the lever on repeat. It'll destroy the magma from existence. That's how I empty my magma pipes usually.

And if you do it with bridges it goes even faster!

That looks like a volcano erupting cats. I applaud you good sir.

Haha, when you mention it like that, it almost makes me regret the plan to let magma or water (undecided) erupt from the top. I guess the burning/drowning will be worth it though.

Better build a tank to store the pumped away magma, build the tower, and put magma back. Pipes refill too slowly... you'll likely abandon before it refills completely.

No need, i'm playing on a 1x1 map, and im rebuilding the magmapipe to a 9x9 circle. I've somewhat emptied the magmapipe a few times now, and it refills quite fast. but then again, the years just seem to fly by. At any rate, the magmapipe already fills fast, and itll fill even faster when i have 9x9'd it.

im doing something similar at the moment, but i have a different approach, namely i first empty the magma pipe, the build in it, and then slowly let the magma pipe refill. I wonder if itll work

Yes.  Gears and axles work underwater and in magma, although axles will burn and non magma safe gears will melt in magma.

Awwww, Since water flows out of the map, i will have to use magma. But last time i checked i coudn't make magmaproof axles. Oh boy.
