Creative Projects / Ilralbuzat: Treatytwig Video Highlights
« on: June 24, 2017, 11:56:03 am »
I hope this is in the right place and in the spirit of the forums. I am streaming DF and snipping highlights to YouTube. The master plan is to write stories based on the highlights and, if all goes well, perhaps even make some simple Blender animations and so forth. Everything is Creative Commons so if the mood strikes, by all means, spin off on your own with anything that may strike your fancy.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Embark Size
« on: February 10, 2016, 10:37:17 pm »
Thanks folks.

I will run this 8x8 till it crashes then go back to smaller embarks. I guess maybe I am remembering things in terms of a smaller screen with lower resolution.

I guess I must be delusional, but I sure thought I remembered maxing out embark sizes back in the day. Perusing the interwebs, it would appear that is a pipe dream.

I have a metric ton of memory, but just an i5 for a processor. Any info anywhere on max embark sizes? So far both 16x16 and 15x15 have crashed before they complete calculation and give me a map.

If anyone wants troubleshooting info on these crashes, please let me know where to look. I seem to be getting less and less computer savvy the older I get.
without bin patches, df has a 2gb max

So much for memory I guess. No advice for max sizes?

Also, it seems every time I start a game, it wants to count off a few days of calculation of SOMETHING. Can I not save it somehow so it can start without doing the extra calculations? Not seeing a save for that on the embark map anywhere.

FWIW, I seem to have gotten a 9x9 to at least start, though it cratered immediately upon hitting "enter" at the "Strike the Earth" prompt. 8x8 is running. Will try to actually play it tomorrow.

A pecan porter sounds like a junior in a herbalist team, tasked with food hauling :P

That's just silly!!!11!!!!!11!

Dwarf eyes can adjust to the IR spectrum, at which point their own body heat serves as a light source. I'm surprised more of you did not know this.

My own home brewed pecan porter.

Ok I lie. But I DID home brew a pecan porter once.

Once.

Actually my home brewed Marzen was my best attempt at home brewing - apparently so good I decided to retire with that success. Been over two years now.

Oh? Bummer. Ok. I saw this from 2014, which seems to indicate you could play 3d live via overlay or some such.

http://www.pcgamer.com/dwarf-fortress-0-40-01-released-in-game-graphics-now-possible-in-older-version/

And then I saw that blurb about engraved images.

Well... ok. LOL!

Some day before I die, I hope to see this game with some half decent graphics.

Edited to add:

http://www.wired.com/2014/07/dwarf-fortress-3d/

This flat out seems to say Stonesense can now make the game playable in 3d, but has no real instructions or link.

I am downloading lazy newb pack for Linux. If I figure it out I guess I will answer my own question here. If someone notices me before then, I will be eternally grateful.

...or at least briefly grateful.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / State of Graphics Changed?
« on: February 03, 2016, 11:49:29 pm »
I hope you will forgive me if this is a repeated thread, but I have seen a few reports that as of 2014 DF could be played more or less in 3d, and then I read some updates that seemed to be speaking of an "image specifying interface".

Can someone give me the quick lowdown and a link to the most recent set of mods and packs I need to play this version in 3d? And, is all of this possible in Linux? I have Windows 10 as well, but I do most of my day to day computing on my Linux drive and would much prefer to have DF there if at all possible.

Thanks for any help.

DF Announcements / Re: Dwarf Fortress 0.34.11 Released

Just got back into DF after a bit of a hiatus. Got to say, not liking the dwarves' new 'intelligent' behaviour regarding building things. They still trap themselves, and build things in a dafter order, but now you can't make them do things sensibly. Dwarves really need to be predictable. Haven't tested their digging powers yet.

Ah! Thought so...

Intelligent masons?
Hurray!

I'm sure I'm not the only one that figured masons walling themselves in and starving to death was meant to be a feature...

D'oh!

There is a reasonable middle ground that can solve global warming without causing global poverty.  There are tons of international bodies that have laid out such plans.  The third war is largely on board.  This whole debate was kinda amusing for a while but rapidly becoming even more pointless then the horrific morass that started this thread.

The third world is on board? Why would they not be. I would be on board for the great powers of this earth to stop treating me like crap as well.

What I SAID was that in order to make these changes, we in the west are going to have to get very serious about holding our leadership accountable.

Go ahead. Go back and read what I wrote. I triple dog dare you...

What is your issue?

Lol. i'm saying that there's no specific meaning. It's you who's asking people to "kow-tow" to your specific definition.

"Left and right mean what they mean, and if you choose to purposefully misunderstand the terms in their context that is your right. I am still going to use the terms though." as YOU said.

You can use them, they "mean what they mean" to you, and means something else to other people.

Interestingly, you will hardly ever hear anyone on the right complain about being labelled as part of the political right. They complain about policies they do not support being attached to "the right".

Yours is a game of semantics that is based on the fact that leftist politics have been fairly negatively portrayed. I would submit to you that "the left" is making a come back, but it is not going to do them much good to then abandon such a well established brand.

I myself personally do not have a party or a "side" any more, so I can sympathize with the concept you are trying to put forward. However, it is just as easy for me to say, "I share some issues with the left, and some with the right," as it is for me to try to disassemble a century or more of political jargon. I just will not engage in that sort of thing. I prefer to speak to people in common terms.

.... Since what i said was a belief that the left isn't even a thing.
It's not a thing, the Democrats are not a left-wing party by any stretch of the imagination. That's going by standard definitions of socialist. The Democrats push free markets same as the Republicans.

Band-aids to help the poor / welfare etc get pushed by both conservatives and progressive elements in capitalist societies. Those are not part of socialist doctrine itself (they are appeasement to stop rebellions and "opiates of the masses" in an elite heirarchial system).

20th century "socialist" nations push 100% direct employment programs, not "welfare". In 20th century communist countries, you didn't eat if you didn't work. Everybody worked - or else. Very different to a capitalist nation applying welfare (which is a stop-gap measure meant to deal with under employment due to a labor market system). Now that China's moving to a capitalist system, I wouldn't be surprised if they're having to implement direct welfare programs for excess workers.

You can argue about political relativism, then any nation can be said to have a "left" and a "right" side. But that doesn't make the Republicans = Nazis and the Democrats = Stalinists. So the terms don't have any straight meaning.

I kind of like the idea of a 100% employment policy, and am disappointed that U.S. policy makes that more difficult for nations that choose to pursue it.

Nevertheless, I am not going to kowtow to your demand that we use terms as you dictate. Left and right mean what they mean, and if you choose to purposefully misunderstand the terms in their context that is your right. I am still going to use the terms though.

I never said leftists are running the show. Please go back and read my post and stop this. I know exactly what I posted and why. The point is that we cannot continue to use massive resources while expecting developing nations to cut back. Sadly, only one of the three people who responded seems to have read my post, and all I could think of to reply to them was, "Yeah, so let's all get to work on that."
