DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Efficiency Layouts
« on: June 25, 2011, 09:03:02 pm »
What's up guys. So I'm finally getting a computer that can play dwarf fortress again.  The shitty macbook I've had for years only played it at about 7fps, and I've somehow managed to play my very first fortress all that time.  I've always wanted to start anew but the time investment involved in such a venture was just too long.  Anyways, I'm about to start playing df2010 (for the first time!) on my i72600k and am really excited!  However, I've learned that my layout is extremely inefficient, much of which is because the basic layout of my fortress came shortly after I finished captn duck's intro vids and I never really had very much room to optimize.  Obviously, I have quite a few ideas to make my fort more efficient but after poking around here I wanted to see all of the best that you guys had to offer.  A further bonus is if the efficiency is aesthetically pleasing as well.

Anyway, I was hoping that maybe you guys could take screens of all the various layouts that work for you and post 'em in this thread (I know many of these float around various threads but I've yet to see them all aggregated in one spot).  Also, just plain cool layouts are welcome too!

I've yet to move on besides a little messing around with the "new" version.  Why?  Well I've been playing the same fort since I started two years ago.  Most of the time I'm stuck at about 9fps and have been creating an epic fort.  There have been plenty of mistakes and plenty of over-comings.  I've somehow managed to avoid tantrum spirals and currently my fort is so well defended nothing poses a threat.  I'm doing a bunch of stupid time consuming things for the hell of it, but I have a vision of where my fort needs to be and want to see it through.  I've put too much time into it to give up on it now.  I figure I'm about 3 months til completion after 2 years.  Also, I have no clowns on the map so my biggest threat are goblin hoards (my military is all champions with hundreds of kills each) and the even more dangerous wolf that makes miners run into the moats and drown (the largest casualty cause to date).  I was wondering if there are any other perfectionist/completionists out there like me :)

Also, the new military screen seems so nice yet so daunting to learn :(

I want to take my 40d save from my os x partition to my xp partition so i can use a viewer.  what folder(s) do i copy and where.  what about my tileset?  can i transfer a save to a new set?  Will i have to reinstall one?  Just want to be sure cuz i've only been playing one fort for the last year and a half, which is also my first fort  :D.

p.s., does the "merge" mean i can add the new release features to my 40d fort? i hope so cuz then i'll never have to reembark!

DF Suggestions / New pastime for nobles/New civ. element
« on: June 22, 2010, 12:03:16 am »
Recently the proletariat dwarves of my fortress grew tired of the demands and punishments of the pesky bourgeoisie nobles.  In turn many nobles who had no real contribution and plenty of demands of the fortress founds their doors locked and died a long agonizing death of starvation.  However, when their replacements were sent the new hammerdwarf made a point to show that any signs of rebellion would not be tolerated and began making quick work of many of the prominent working class dwarves.  Among the first to be murdered was none other than my beloved Erush Kamaril.  She was of the founding 7 and legendary stone worker, mason, and engraver.  Her labors brought priceless beauty and high wealth with her beautifully illustrated engravings that covered every stone surface she could access.  In earlier days she was in the military and responsible for holding off more elves than one she dwarf should.  She was a great asset and friend to us all.  Her loss has not gone unnoticed.

This leads me to my idea, whether it be modded or not.  First off, torture workshops.  I would love to have a dwarf whose sole job was to manage prisoners - be they Elves, goblins, or worse yet, those spoiled nobles-and make sure they spend the rest of their pathetic lives being tortured and punished.  When a noble is placed in one of these workshops, he or she will no longer be able to make any demands, as they will fall upon uncaring ears.  The only thing they will mutter is cries for a quick and sudden death, which would be far too nice.

Furthermore, I was thinking about the tax collectors job.  What if, say, their was a "royal" tax collector who came every year to your fort, met with your local tax collector, and took his share back to the king. It would be cool I think if one day when he shows up he learns there are no taxes to collect.  He obviously threatens you to pay the back-owed taxes or face punishment, an to allow the noble dwarves to once again take control of the fortress, as their interest is of the kings.  If his demands aren't met and your fortress is truly one owned by the proletariat working class, war will come of you.  Any dwarven populations loyal to the king would begin to siege and so forth.  However, either by your example or at their own cause, other dwarven cities may choose to "rebel" from the monarchy and write their own future.  This would allow you to continue to trade with certain other factions.  I also kind of like the idea of a potential civil war element this leaves.  Also, this is obviously up to the player to decide.  Maybe the goblin hordes are enough and it's just better to submit to the King's authority and things stay peachy.

This is just one man's hopes and dreams.  Tell me what y'all think and feel free to continue from where I left off, if it so fits your fancy.

DF Modding / For those of us with low end computers...
« on: May 30, 2010, 11:50:23 pm »
I've done a little poking around without much success, but what I aim for is a list of all mods or tweaks available to play at a decent frame rate on lower end computers.  For reference, I'm running on a 2.16gb dual core with a gig of ram and integrated graphics and get about 12fps windowed.  Preferably, I'd like to keep all game elements in tact, namely weather and temperature, etc.  Hopefully we can create a reference for other not so fortunate fort guardians stuck with bad computers...

2010 and 40d tips are both welcome for me  :D

DF Gameplay Questions / Patch with new releases?
« on: April 15, 2010, 08:41:08 pm »
I'm playing 31.02 and am wondering if there is any way to patch the game to .03 and of course any other future releases. I don't want to lose the fortress I've got already (I'm one of those guys who plays one fortress for a very long time)

Also, just a side question while I'm here.  Is there any way to dump items off the map so I don't lose any more of my precious frame-rate?
