You call that bad? Psssh. I'm running a 900Mhz Single Core with 256Mb RAM. Please, for the love of god, help me.

Run dwarf fortress? I don't even know how you can run a web browser on a beast like that

DF Modding / For those of us with low end computers...
« on: May 30, 2010, 11:50:23 pm »
I've done a little poking around without much success, but what I aim for is a list of all mods or tweaks available to play at a decent frame rate on lower end computers.  For reference, I'm running on a 2.16gb dual core with a gig of ram and integrated graphics and get about 12fps windowed.  Preferably, I'd like to keep all game elements in tact, namely weather and temperature, etc.  Hopefully we can create a reference for other not so fortunate fort guardians stuck with bad computers...

2010 and 40d tips are both welcome for me  :D

Dropped from 120 to 20?  20fps is blazing fast for me!  I'm stuck down at 13, and that's on a good day!

@Askot Bokbondeler: Oh and for the record, I personally don't think the female dwarfs need beards.

What blasphemy!

If I could suggest something, I'd suggest Bolding the Profession names when grouped by profession. Not a big deal but, hey, doesn't hurt to ask.

DF Announcements / Re: Dwarf Fortress 0.31.03 Released

Slight FPS boost with said changes... just slight.  I just saved my fort in .02 and was getting 45-50fps.  This gets 65fps or so.

damn I'm lucky to break 15fps

DF Gameplay Questions / Patch with new releases?
« on: April 15, 2010, 08:41:08 pm »
I'm playing 31.02 and am wondering if there is any way to patch the game to .03 and of course any other future releases. I don't want to lose the fortress I've got already (I'm one of those guys who plays one fortress for a very long time)

Also, just a side question while I'm here.  Is there any way to dump items off the map so I don't lose any more of my precious frame-rate?

I like the generic animal-man names. It's not clear to people what a "thri-kreen" is if they haven't played D&D, but everybody gets some sort of visual when they see "Ant-Man." A lot of them don't have proper mythological or gaming names anyway. What would a slugman be?

Plus I like having maps with Batmen on them. I chortle every time I see the "Building interrupted by Batman" message.

Notice, though, that Toady uses "Merman" instead of "Fish-Man." Hmm.... a bit of inconsistency?

I remeber when I discovered a goblin wearing a batman loincloth.  goblins wear batman undies.

Dont forget a super-computer stricly for DF pathfindnig calculation so we can have a fort with 1k population :D
Oh my... The pain... Sieges would be like Minas Tirith all over again!!

(while on that note)
...I have new respects for watching the battle for Minas Tirith. I mean, they carved that whole ciy out of rock. In a Terrifying biome with constant orc seiges.

AND THEY'RE HUMAN!
Because of DF and that post, I'm wondering what other mods Tolkien was using.
Im also wondering if Gimli was actually a dwarf. If you read the books, he wanted to take Legolas into the back of Helms deep to see the crystal caverns (I forgot the real name, but thats essentially what they are) in return, Legolas would take him to see groves of trees in some forest. Why would you DO THAT?

And yes, I do wonder what mods Tolkien was using cause Wizards don't have biomes... Nor do ents... and there's no such thing as "necromancers". Or ships. Or pirates for that matter... And mithril? Pft, Adamantium all the way, dwarves...

In defense of Gimli, A Champion does as he pleases!

I've never been on the something aweful forums but god bless em
Hah.  Hahaha. HAHAHAHAHHAAAA!!!!!!!

My brother's a Somethingawful goon.  It can get very . . . intense there.  Not as nice a forum as this one, according to him.  They did bring us Boatmurdered, though.

On topic, I added "Boatmurdered" to my Firefox dictionary.

There are a lot of nice forums out there and a lot of terrifying ones.

I'm a bit of a /b/tard, which is usually considered worse then a goon.  But I keep my /b/ and my bay12 / all other forums separate from each other and thank god.

...when I enter a building, I admire how well made all of the rooms and walls are constructed, and how much room there is in them!

...I also mince wine with wine and call it Biscuits!

go to /tg/ dwarf fortress is celebrated highly there.  i find it a bit more responsive to quick questions than the ol bay12

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Has Magma Spoiled You
« on: November 17, 2009, 02:22:08 pm »
I'm still going witht he fort I learned how to play (almost a year old irl).  With my low framerate it has taken me forever to get where I'm at now.  No magma, all wood baby.  There's something satisfying about 'd' 't'ing the entire map to fill my massive wood stockpiles and knowing the elves are raging back home, they're just too afraid to say something to my face about it  ;D

I'm almost done with my mega construction castle walls and my plan for ultimate defense is to wall off my outer stockpiles and farms and connect myself to them via tunnels.  The only time my dwarves will be in danger is when they chop down wood.  Which I do once every other year or so.  I'm sure I will be untouchable at this point so I'll probably start another fortress.  The goblins haven't been a threat in years, I just feel it's a realistic thing to do to keep every dwarf woman and child safe.

macfag here.  I don't have any programming skills but if you guys need emotional support well....

I for one would love to see more prepackaged tilepacks/mods for mac.  For some reason I suck at getting any of it to work.
