I might be interested in the engravers team, if I have time. I've cleared orc and gotten to bottom of the lair, got ganked by some death yaks... Out of practice, but if I have time I'll get back into it, will look into the new update.

I think you could use a tower of brige-dog-rooms. As the enemy come into the choke point drop the first squad, then drop the second squad down to the prep room and so on to prepare for the next parts. You could make use of a blind corner so your surviving dogs aren't destroyed by archers as the next squad approaches and your next dog wave waits above. That's what I'd do at least

I've seen zinc boil in some caravans I was frying, at that point I officially deemed magma my favourite.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Dying of Thirst
« on: November 28, 2009, 04:17:20 pm »
I've had repeated problems with dying of thirst. My theory is that they can't get to the barrel because it's being used so they cancel drink. Then they have a thirsty status. They are temporarily wounded and back, cancelling drink until another round of time passes and by then they are dehydrated and sometimes die.
This has it's flaws, but my usual situation is that I run out of booze and half refuse to drink water, seriously. I see some dwarves drinking fine but some just die. Possibly because they can't fit into the water hole and it goes into the cancel drink cycle? This is probably wrong and the fact is I don't know, it's just obnoxious.

I'd try for 60 archery targets to see if that works. If not, it just narrows the problem down!

When you use the site finder set it for magma and in the init set it to always visible, that's what I use when I desire a tasty treat for my foes.

Ever since I saw that first human being killed by boiling zinc, I've loved magma so much.  :)

Gremlins in my fort, they just don't try to pull levers or sneak that I've seen.

over 2k wood, will it lag more in a stockpile than if I built stuff with it? How does burning charcoal work(how long basically)? I only have ~140 iron bars to make steel with until the next gobbo siege, third and should start bringing more iron.

I've contemplated making centers of production, like have pods for different industries. In the middle a food pod with farms, clothiers/dyers, butchers/animals, brewers/cooks and have a full living facility (dining room, food/booze stocks, and beds) with it with all those professions assigned to those beds. Have a stone pod, magma pod, etc. Have never done it yet though I think I will someday.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: The Ultimate DF PC

4 gigs ram, 3.2GHZ Processor, 87 dwarves (have passed 100 with equal results), refilling magma pipe and insane stone dumping/hauling more logs than I have stones gives me about 50FPS, it doesn't change when I open up firefox or something, thus the multi-core thing comes in handy. I'm always tempted to close my other programs, but it doesn't make a difference. even 30FPS is definitely playable. When I start a new fortress it seems too fast! Video card is EVGA NVidia GTX 260, more than enough for DF. It's hilarious that most other *modern* games get constant ~92 FPS when DF gets 50...

Check with mom to see if the possibility of exploding gore is OK. Or G rate it, I have no opininon honestly, my gut feeling is that a game where you play god is bad for an 8 year old, I guess just cut her off if she starts making execution chambers or something similar.  :o

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?

I'm clear cutting the world. All of my haulers trying to keep up with two legendary woodcutters, nothing else is getting done with that and my sad face death pit I'm fully walling for a colored smily. The elves better be extremely pissed off with 2206 logs and me magma'ing their caravans. Bring more elves to kill! Muahaha!!! And now some migrants, will they push me over 80 dwarves? No, only 9 came.

It's not to hard to ensure you have space for evaporation. Even with thousands of 2/7 and 1 1/7 your farm will eventually dry. Just keep (k)'ing the farthest tile until you have complete muddiness then close the floodgate. Wait awhile and you're done! If I still had the fortress I'd show you my setup, extremely easy though so it would be pointless anyway.
