DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The Murder of Melbil Olinadag.
« on: May 05, 2010, 06:45:23 pm »
So, I'm playing Fort mode on the new version for the first time, and I'm completely clueless on most of new military features, so I was like, "Okay, who cares about Military I'll be fine." So at the start of year two, My planter, Melbil, was walking back to the fort after just planting some Plump Helmets when suddenly, two ambushes of about 5 Kobold Archers/Crossbowmen appeared on both sides of him, and quickly surrounded him, And began firing their weapons upon him, After about 50 or so arrows/bolts were fired, I looked on the wiki for how to attack. Sadly, by the time they reached him, he was riddled with about 50 more arrows/bolts and died of blood loss shortly after the fighting began.

I thought this was actually pretty badass. Seeing so many arrows and bolts fly towards him at once, and then my dwarves running out to help. Too bad he's dead though.

-Goes back to watch the fight continue-

DF Gameplay Questions / Permanently fixing Key Configuration?
« on: May 03, 2010, 09:40:12 am »
Alright, every time I start the game, I've got to change the keys around. I'm tired of having to change escape to space, * and / to < and >.

I just want to start the game up and play the game without worrying. Wheres the settings for like, auto key functions or something? Only thing that looked close was Interface text document, but I couldn't make heads or tails of it.

Can somebody help out?

DF Modding / Need Help with a mod idea~
« on: May 03, 2010, 12:53:02 am »
For a while now, I've been wanting to do a mostly frozen/snowy world, but I've realized I probably won't be able to do this without either modding the races, or screwing with world gen. Or perhaps both.

Could anyone perhaps give me some pointers/advice or whatever to do this?

I know I would most likely have to edit the BIOME_SUPPORT tag, and... Uh.. Yeah. I'm a bit lost. Still not that good at Modding. >.<

Any help would be appreciated. I just think it'd be pretty damn cool to have like, the whole world cold, and polar bears running through human towns. >.> Or something like that. I can't describe it.

~Kamudo's Guide to the Underground~

Hey everyone, Kamudo here. Since Underground exploration is pretty popular, I'm going to just rewrite this whole first post to encompass everything people should know. Please note that the following information is a work in progress and is in no way complete. It will be better organized when I have time to work on it.

Basic general things you should know.
The underground is an expansive network of caverns that cover the world. It generally comes in 3 layers, each of which have their own variation of trees, creatures and other things. Below layer 3 is a sea of Magma, that is impassable. Layer 3 also has something in it that allows you to reach even deeper layers.

You cannot fast travel underground.*

*It's possible to travel directly under an above ground site. Whether this is a bug, or what, it's an effective way to escape to the surface, regardless of how deep you may be.

The only ways to reach the underground is by either digging down with a fortress, or finding a cave entrance. Cave entrances do not always guarantee entry though.
Weapons and skills
Dwarves, Elves and Goblins are all now the same sizes, so if you want to have a fully steeled up Elf, go right ahead. If you're planning on going with Melee weapons, be sure to place some points in the fighter skill class, as it will help you better fight off enemies. Ranged attack is not recommended, with the narrow passages, and the lack of ammo. Be sure to get at least Adequate Swimming, as there are many times you will have to swim to proceed. Save often, and if you need, open task manager and close the game, as broken bones will become infected, and we're unsure if you can treat that.

Slashing weapons (Swords, Axes, etc) Are good for slashing off limbs, and cutting through enemies. They are less effective against armored beasts, and creatures that can't be killed by simply cutting it. (IE Flesh balls will not die from slash damage.)

Smash/crush weapons (Hammers, Maces) are good for breaking bones, and getting through tough opponents. Pretty much what was said above, applies here. As in smashing flesh balls.

Food/Water/sleep/ Possible Healing
It's recommended that you take at least two or three waterskins full of fresh water, as we are unable to be certain if muddy water, blood or pus from infections make you sicker when drinking those things. Food can be obtained from underground tribes, but it's still recommended that you bring a lot of food from the surface, at least 30-50 units, as you may be underground for a long time.

Butchery: The butchery skill is incredibly useful, it allows you to butcher creatures. So, as long as you have a dagger (knapping stones too?), you'll be able to carve up anything you want, as long as it's not sentient.

Sleeping. Sleeping is dangerous, as you can be ambushed by anything while this happens. I suggest looking around the immediate area and making sure no creatures are stalking around, and try to sleep somewhere that's not wide open. As that way, you can have less of a chance of being attacked. Like sleeping in a one tile hallway that is blocked at one end allows the monsters to attack from only one direction. Or, sleep with friendly tribes underground, as they will try to protect you.

You can take cloth and wrap it around your wounded areas. The effectiveness of this is still unknown. Fast traveling will help heal you a bit as well, though it's much much slower. If you pick up a crutch, you will gain the Crutchwalker skill, and it will help your movement speed if you're missing a leg or have it broken.

Friendly Underground tribes and features.
Tribes are your best friends. They have food, you can recruit them, and they work well as meat shields, and sleeping companions. (Since sleep is difficult.) You can take all of their food, and leather, and they won't get mad at you.

Features. Features are things such as magma pools, downward slopes, and Deep pits.
Avoid magma. Aside from magma creatures, you have worry of dodging into it if you're fighting near it. Deep pits have no use. They're just there in case you're dying and need a quick way to off yourself. Downward ramps are a great way to get down a layer really fast. Good luck finding one though, they're really rare.

Bestiary
The following area will include descriptions of monsters, and how to kill them, and things you should avoid.

Musicality!
For us adventurers with a keen imagination. I believe I've found a great song for Cavern travel.
Behold the Darkness

Who I'd like to thank:
Mythos, for providing a lot of tips.
Lucied, for collecting monster information for me.
LukeRM, for healing notes.
Cerion, for point out several things.

So, seen anything bizarre in the game so far? Any weird creatures, megabeasts, or just something new that shocked you?

Why not share it then?

I'll start. While running through a cave in adventure mode, I ran into a Elk Bird. I was like, "Wtf."

"A large creature found grazing on mushrooms deep underground. It has the head of a bird with horns of a great elk."

This was new for me. So... Yeah. >__>

DF Modding / Several Questions regarding Modding.
« on: March 20, 2010, 02:45:53 am »
Okay, first off, anything that's not in the RAW files, cannot be changed, is this correct? As I see on the forum, this is... Hard coded?

Does the Wiki have decent explanations on Modding?

Can someone help me understand the values for weapons? I'm wanting to try my hand at creating a weapon.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
What do each values represent.. And what not? >.>

Can Changing the raws affect strange moods, as in, adding in new items, clothing, etc, and have them be strange mooded about?

I'll have more questions when these are answered. >.>;

Also, sorry for asking so much, I've become extremely interested in modding, since it's allowing me to add in some fun, while I wait for the next release.

Hello all.
This is a 40d Sucession fort.

It's run my myself, and Imp. Our words are law.

I have mostly everything picked out, so If you like the map/starting Dwarves, then You're always welcome to Join!

Location:
It's a 9x9 map with Flux Stone, No Aquifer, It has an underground river, and a Magma Pipe, A Chasm, and 'Other Features'. All three Biomes in it are hot, and two of them are mountainous while the third to the north is Hilly land, where there is some trees.

The Bridge of Amusing (The Dwarves):
Two Miners
One FisherDwarf
One Engraver/Mason
One Woodcutter/Carpenter
One Grower/Herbalist/Brewer
One Appraiser/Organizer/Record Keeper
Two Cats
Two Dogs
Standard Embark Equipment

The Above Stats on the Dwarves are accurate. They're not Novice or anything.

The Rules:
No Mods.
No Helper Devices.
No other bad/exploitable devices.
Games will Run from Spring 1 to Spring 1. So as soon as you get a message saying Spring has arrived. Save it and give the file to the next player.
Your turn can take up to a week, if you don't finish in that time, the next person plays from the previous save.
It's advised to make periodic updates about your fort in a 'leaders journal' fashion. An End of the Year Report, describing the important events of the year is required.

The Players involved:
Kamudo - Year 201 -FINISHED-
Lucied - Year 202 -FINISHED-
Imp - Year 203 -FINISHED-
Darkrider2 - Year 204 -FINISHED-
Grimlocke - Year 205 -FINISHED-
Jordrake - Year 206 -FINISHED-
. . .
I'm unsure of all of the turns, Imp keeps track of them in posts, so look for the current turn order.

I'll most likely start the fort in the low lands with the trees away from the Chasm and near the Magma Pipe.

Uh.. Questions, comments and Join requests are welcome.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Most Epic Goblin?
« on: March 17, 2010, 07:38:58 pm »
Is there currently a Most Epic Goblin in the Dwarf Fortress Community?

Do people actually care about Goblins?

If there is a most epic Goblin, can I contest this position with a more epic Goblin?

I know We've got Tholtig, Cacame, and.. Uh.. Yeah.

I'm posting this in Adventure Section because I'd most likely try to have an adventurer goblin take that position, with his own awesome Narrative, if people would want that.

So yeah, get back to me with answers and what not. ^^;

DF Modding / Playing as Goblins?
« on: March 15, 2010, 05:14:53 pm »
Can someone tell me, or direct me into the Wikipedia where I may edit the raws to play a Goblin fortress?

I recently played N3 and am really liking goblins, after playing Dwingvatt. >.>

DF Gameplay Questions / Holy Crap, New Computer.
« on: March 13, 2010, 02:12:10 am »
I just bought a new computer, and I wanted to test out Dwarf fortress.

I loaded a saved game that I had on a flash drive, it was a 6x6 map, and It loads, and my dwarves are all zipping around almost faster than I can see. My FPS is at 100 constantly. Is this normal? And should I try to lower the FPS? Cause they've smoothed my entire fort in a matter of minutes. I must say, it's pretty impressive, but damn.

Should I leave it be?

DF Suggestions / Economy, Property, Real Estate, Etc.
« on: March 05, 2010, 03:45:54 am »
Well, I've searched over the forum extensively and I checked the dev log, so If this was mentioned in either, and I missed it, then so sorry.

A future adventure and possible dwarf mode suggestion I would like to see, is the ability to be able to work in the housing trade. More or less, seeing a housing commissioner or some such, and buying/trading/renting/whatever with property. Also, this would include the purchase of empty plots, in an attempt to help expand cities.

So, say Jimmy McHuman is our adventurer. He's acquired a large sum of gold, and wishes to buy a property in town. He buys a blank lot, and then goes about building a home on it, the property value increases, and he becomes the landlord of said property, and rents it out to another individual who then pays rent for the building. The rent would be transferred to a possible future bank, or just to said housing commissioner.

Also you could possibly receive recognition from the lord of the city, and then be given privileges to build exclusively, for the town, building workshops, etc, while being a real estate agent.

Then there could be also factors to the homes value, such as furniture inside, location depending on distance to the temple, stores and then desirability of land.

I honestly had more to say on the subject, but if what I'm trying to say comes across as unclear, then allow me to try to explain better. Suggestions/tips/advice are good too. ^^;;

DF Gameplay Questions / A few Questions on HFS
« on: February 19, 2010, 02:06:55 am »
Okay, basically I uncovered some demons, they murdered me. I covered up the hole that they were coming out of.

So, I won't have any more demons coming out of the hole, right? If it's been covered, only demons that got out, will still be an issue.

And any demons still released, can I kill them with a well equipped army of 30 noobs?

Also, my queen died, will another one get appointed, or is our country screwed? O_o

DF Gameplay Questions / Help with Corpses (Spoilers About HFS)
« on: February 08, 2010, 05:41:20 pm »
Okay, so I have a really old world from like, June, and I built this really awesome castle, but I unleashed demons, and sealed the hole up, but they still keep coming. Anyways, all of my people died, I sent 5 reclaim attempts, they all died too. And now on the 6th try, I managed to hold up 33 dwarves inside my castle thing. But none of them want to dump the corpses. I have a sealed courtyard outside with a dump, graveyard, and a refuse pile. But they don't want to take the corpses out there, even though they're all rotten. I have Dump corpses enabled, Dwarves can go outside, and I've set the corpses to be dumped.

I'm just tired of all of my dwarves getting disgusted by all of the dead animal bodies, demon bodies, and dwarf parts everywhere.

Any suggestions?
