Yeah, that is a good idea.  I just never stay on the spot I embark to, I always move to some other part of the map  :P

I usually recreate the stockpile I'm having problems with when this happens to me.  One other thing, and I don't know why this would be, but check to see if the shield is being used in any current task.  That might also prevent them from moving it.

I also avoid the "quantum dumping" method as it just feels to dirty to me :p  Instead what I would suggest is if you have alot of soil on your map dig out a farily large sapce in the soil (make sure you have enough for farms, you don't need much for them) and make a stone stockpile.  Since digging in soil won't leave anything behind dwarves will immediately start clearing your halls of stone.

Also, if you don't mind just getting rid of the extra stone build a couple of catapults and have some dwarves man them 24/7, when they get good at siege operation they will load them pretty fast and help to clear out the stone.

Stone traps are also good for extra stone, build a ton of them you can never have to many!!

I just recently started playing the new version, there weren't any carp in the version I used to play years ago.  I thought the claims of murderous carp decimating dwarves were exaggerated, until I lost my embark party to a single carp...lol

So I set up a gate in my walls where I have War dogs as guards.  It looks like this:

So I had a Kobold thief try to come through the gate, the dogs detected him and he promptly got caught in a cage trap.  I set the cage to dump at my garbage dump which is next to a pit of lava (well 1 z-level above actually).  So someone grabbed the cage and went and chucked it off the side into the lava.  A couple seconds later I get a message that my War Dog was kill by a trap.

Now here is the wierd thing, the dog was on fire, the message I got in announcements said that he was struck down by a trap.  I don't have any traps that would burn anything?

Just wondering if anyone knows what the hell happened to my dog :)

Put them on duty.  It is dangerous to have a xbow dwarf with a high hand-to-hand skill as they sometimes decide they want to wrestle close opponents instead of reloading.

^  I've had this happen before.  If you keep them on the walls above the enemies you should be ok, note I said "should".

You could also forbid ammo when the elites are off duty when you want to give them a break.  Personally I leave marksdwarves off duty until they are champions, then they get set to perma-duty.

You could always customize their name to include a hint about their general skills, for instance I usually name my Craftdwarves that work with Stone and bones: Stonebones.  I'm sure there is a better way of doing it but this works for me :)

I notice this alot when I have more then one miner digging a channel.  They almost always get stuck.

First off, great game.  Very fun.  Most the issues I have had with the game are already reported, although I ran into this issue yesterday and did not see a bug report on it.  I had a Metalsmith that went into a fey mood.  He went to the forge and made an artifact, it was a chain.  The Dwarf Fortress Wiki says that you use your Metalsmithing skill to make furniture, and lists Chains among furniture.  However after making this item my Metalsmith became a legendary Furnace Operator, not a Legendary Metalsmith as would be expected.
