DF Gameplay Questions / Equipping a shield / weapon?

My adventurer had a copper shield and I found an iron shield so I wanted to upgrade. I dropped my copper shield to be able to equip my iron shield by hitting 'w' but it says there is nothing left to wear. A few questions;

1. How do I equip a shield / weapon?

2. Is a iron shield actually better than a copper shield?

I should mention I've had no problem equipping other armor.

So, I made a fort. Dug some stuff out, killed some groundhogs. Good times.

Oh, wait, we're out of booze. It is probably a good idea to make it, right?

So, off to the wikia. I gather some plants (D and P), and make a plot for them. The dwarf does stuff to the plot, I pick the seeds, then... what? Am I missing something or did I do something wrong? There seems to be no indication anything is happening.

I was able to change a few things I get my Netbook up to 25FPS. Should have tried longer before asking for help, sorry.

So I play (on the same save) on both my Netbook and my PC. With the new version I am now getting about 5-7FPS on my Netbook and am capped at 25FPS (thinking of raising that, though) on my PC. When I started my fortress I was getting a comfortable 15FPS on my netbook, but the 5-7 is just hard to enjoy.

So I go and fiddle around in the setting. I change my "Print Mode" to VBO (I have no idea what any of this is XD) and I manage to get my FPS up to 11, so, good. Then I go to turn Temperature and Weather off and see how much of an effect I get from that. My FPS goes down to 2-3.  :\

That can't be right, right? But, when I go and turn them back on, my FPS goes back up to ~11. Are there factors I am confused about in FPS?

So I am a good bit into my fort (still pretty early, though) and everything seems to be going well. The outside was kind enough to spawn me a weapon smith and furnace operator RIGHT as I got my furnaces set up and the first caravan brought me pretty much everything I needed. Everything's going good.

Then some unkillable vomit monster appears and, of course, I have not saved once since I started.

I've paused my game, and I really don't wanna lose this fort. I'd be fine with losing to a goblin invasion or something, but this is just depressing. Is there any fancy memory editing I can do or something to kill the vomit monster and save my fort?

There was a mod I had before that raised my FPS from 18 to 100(caped) on a 3x3 embark. I can't seem to find it, but it was awesome. Does anyone know the one I am talking about? I'd imagine it would be pretty popular.

DF Gameplay Questions / No noble positions?

So I build a magma forge and wanted to make it so only one Dwarf could use it [P], right? It tells me I need a manager. I was pretty sure I had already set this, so I hit [n] to check. The only options I have for nobles is "Militia Commander", "Book Keeper", and "Militia Captain". No manager or any of those other things.  :\

Why did this happen?

You would think that something made of steam would just cool down and turn into a puddle after a while...

That is what I was hoping for as I lead it upwards. But, nope. I had to abandon my fortress.

Next time I'll make sure to utilize save scumming before I start digging around in the depth of the earth. Does anyone know, next time if I find another unkillable if I save-scum will the baddies be different?

DF Gameplay Questions / A few questions, relating mostly to military.

1) So I figured out how to do military commands through the wiki and was using that to hunt food. A cougar (or a giant cougar, maybe?) appeared on my map and I sent my single military dwarf, who I thought was wielding a copper battle ax, to go poke at him. I noticed the fight was taking longer than I thought it would, I noticed my dwarf wasn't doing too well. Because, in his rush to get to the cougar he seemed to have left his ax behind. : \

It took me a few tried, but I finally got someone to show up with a weapon, and no one too serious injured, so long as you don't count a missing hand.

It seems like about 20% of the time I tell a military dwarf to kill something, they leave their weapon behind. Is this a known glitch, or am I doing it wrong?

^-- Nevermind that, I read a few posts down and found out it is indeed a glitch and not just me being an idiot.

2) If I embark to a place without magma and dig down to the magma sea (I tried, but the Giant Cave Spiders were very rude to my Dwarfs) will I be able to build manga furnaces? I noticed that I don't have the option to build them at this point.

3) So, I have a statue, and I want it encrusted with jewels. However, I have a good bit of spare doors sitting around due to me HAVING to have matching material doors. I was to encrust the statue and only the statue, but if I just selected "Furniture" they may grab something else. Can I force them to only do the thing I want them to somehow?

1) lol,wut? (Less of a question and more of a amusing thing)



How exactly did my newborn go insane and why is a newborn expected to clean itself? XD

2) So, I formed together a rather pathetic squad in a rush due to a sudden Kobolt theif. A few missing limbs and one dead Kobolt later the danger was gone and I go back to building my pointless tower. However, a few hours later, more or less my entire map is covered in blood now, both the Kobolt and the Dwarf's (who didn't even die) blood. Literally there is about 1/5th of the surface is just covered in blood due to my dwarves stepping on the Kobolt's corpse. I seem to remember reading you can have your dwarves clean things now, but I can't figure out how to make them. How?

3) An elven caravan came to my fortress, I figured 'Oh, Elves, I should kill them.' naturally. I get my rather pathetic squad and order them to kill, thinking it would be easier (and more fun) then making some complex trap or walling them in or something. I give the order to kill one of them in the same way I gave the order to kill the Kobolts and animals. The dwarves (three of them) all run up to the Elf, then run away, then run up to it, then run away, never actually attacking it.  : \

Why?

I think people are getting things mixed up.

Staying in darkness can be a symptom of depression.
Depression isn't a symptom of staying in the dark.

Then again, I failed Psychology.

Happy because I got access to Google Wave, something I have been following for a while now. Slightly less happy since I have no one to talk to on it.

Also happy because I am finally actually "getting" algebra this time around, rather than just memorizing the formulas.
