DF Gameplay Questions / Wow, epic fail. (fire question)

I was doing very well. Got some migrants, struck platinum, made some ludicrously priced meals to rip off traders with, oh, and everyone died in a fire.

So, before I even knew what was going on six of my dwarfs died in a fire. I found the fire (or rather, a ton of smoke). Didn't know what to do so I looked up on the wiki and the wiki pretty much said I couldn't do anything.

I tried restricting the kitchen area, and making the alternate rout a high priority that wasn't much longer in the first place. Nope, they kept going through the fire. I've lost too many to bother continuing. But is there anything I can do to either stop them from walking into the fire or put the fire out?

DF Gameplay Questions / No goods?

So, none of my caravans have any goods in them. They go to the depot, I can go into the trading screen, they just don't have anything to trade. What would cause this? There have been three empty caravans so far.

My question; can it be done?

I have mined all the way under it, and cut a channel all the way around it, as far as I can tell it is now a magical floating mountain.

I've checked it over many many times and I can't find any place I may have missed. I've even looked in VisualFortress and can't find any spots still connected.

Granted, it is a very large area I am trying to collapse. I could have missed something all thirty something times I have checked.  -_-

DF Gameplay Questions / "Could not find path"

So, I was digging downwards looking for metals and such. After I dig down to a certain point I am flooded with hundreds of these messages and my game starts going unplayabley slow. My miners can't seem to figure out how to get out of there.

There is a direct, large, and unblocked path to the surface. Why can't they use it?

DF Gameplay Questions / Pick up those damn bones!

So, I started on a map with skeletons and zombies. It was a damn good map, so I figured I'd deal with it.

Now, obviously I have no shortage of bone/skulls.

Now, I want to get them inside so they don't disappear. I have a standard refuse pile inside (with a door to contain the miasma) but my people are not hauling the bones (plenty of people with "No Job" available). I made a pile specifically for bones and skulls using the custom stockpile but they still will not haul the bones.

My craftdwarfs can use the bones, but must walk clear across the map to get to them, and I am worried they may get injured doing this. Plus, it is a waste of time.

Why will they not carry the bones?

DF Gameplay Questions / How uncommon is this?

I got a goblin attack on my fortress and there was a human in it. I always like looking at them to see what there history was, and I had collected a small list of names to look up.

I backed-up my save, abandoned my fortress, and started looking through legends. I saw this;



Is this a glitch or is a wagon supposed to be here? There was a human caravan that was attacked by some goblins, so I can only assume that is where it came from.

I had a dwarf go into a strange mood. Yay, right?

Well, then they go to the idle area (meeting area, or something) and have just been standing there. As far as I can tell they are not demanding anything, never claimed any workshop, nothing.

Am I missing something?

DF Gameplay Questions / Advice on wall building?

So, I am currently attempting to make an above ground town. Just for fun.

I am trying to make it look natural, and so far it is looking good. Though I am a little irritated at myself for not making the roads all match in color, but that is just a minor detail.

I have all my roads layed out (though, I still have a ton of buildings to finish) and I am ready to start on my wall. Now, I don't just wanna build a 1tile thick wall, as that would be lame and boring.

I don't really have a "question", rather I am just looking for advice on a nice looking and functional wall design.

DF Modding / Trying to add in new races, but can't seem to do it.

First, I am just wanting to play with modding for fun. As of yet, I am not trying to do anything specific.

I wanted to add in some new races. I copied humans, changed everything to make my ridiculous centipede people. I generated a new world, but my centipede people never ended up in the game, legends only had the standard races.

I figured I must have broken something, as I do not know what I am doing. So I revert the file back to standard and instead just copy and paste humans and change their name.

Still, they simply don't show up. I can't see how I could have broken anything due to not having done anything.

What am I doing wrong?

I am wanting to play around with adding races. Not really to play with/as but to see how they work in world history. (A.K.A I wanna fuck everything up by adding in crazy things for the LoLs)

Are there any guides to doing this?

Also, I was going to post this in the modding section, but it looks like that isn't for questions, rather just a place to post finished mods. Please correct me if I am wrong.

DF Gameplay Questions / Destroying Floors? [Answered]

So, I am trying to make an above-ground town, just for the hell of it. I imagine I'll end up having much of this dwarven "fun" I often read about in the wiki.

Anyway, I made a building, floors and walls, and now I realized I want to make a second story. Aesthetics are important to me, so I don't want to simply build the stairs outside, I want them inside.

I am sure it is a simple matter, I just can't figure it out. Nothing mentioned about destroying floors in the wiki, it isn't a building so "q" doesn't work, and I can't dig it out.

How much profit do they expect to get? I keep losing traders, because they get mad at me for "not taking them seriously". At first I thought that something like a 10-30 profit was good, nope. 50? Nope. 500? Nope. 1200? Nope.

They keep leaving, year after year. Do they want my entire fortress for that damned leather? I mean, if I have to give them more than 1,200 profit per trade (that was pretty much everything not nailed to the ground) then I don't see how trade is even really possible.

DF Gameplay Questions / Confused on butchering animals now...

I read the wiki, and I can't figure out what I am doing wrong. I need to make some bags (I can always buy some from the next caravan probably, but I wanna make my own) for glass making. Here is what I am doing.

1) Have a butcher ready with no other jobs.
2) Set a random dwarf to military.
3) Station him next to a ground hog.
4) He kills the ground hog.
5) I pause, and within seconds tell the butcher's workshop to butcher a dead animal.

Then it says that there is no butcher-able animal. I have been trying this for a while and am going to run out of groundhogs to kill.

Sorry for the dumb questions, but I just can't seem to do this.

DF Gameplay Questions / Making Chasm's safe?

So, I have batmen harassing my dwarfs (as far as I can tell they are not hurting them, just being a mild nuisance). I set one of my Dwarfs to military in hopes he could dispatch them for me. My dwarf started killing them without much hassle, but, as I am sure you all have guessed, he fell down the chasm.

I'm all like, "Yay! Oh, no! He's being swarmed! Yay, he's killing them anyway! Almost all of them are dead! Finally I am doing well... oops, he fell... he's dead."

So, for now, is my only solution to cover up the entire chasm (the vast majority of it is underground, luckily, and I have yet to mine into it) my bridges? That was my first thought, but that will take quite a while. Just wanted to check and see if there were any obvious solutions I am missing before I go and build ~50 bridges.

This is the 3rd fortress I have had the problem with.

After I dig down so far (in this case 10 level below my main part of my fortress) my dwarfs simply stop digging. They'll just have the "No Job" thing going on.

The one time I managed to get a dwarf down there, he just stayed down there and couldn't do anything.

Does anyone know why this is happening? Or how I fox it? I'd really like to dig down further, I'm looking for my magma.
