Hahahaha...

What was supposed to start as a very (very very) long term -yet simple- project has ended up destroying my fort for the most part. I still can't get the damn mountain (that I have since (for the most part) mined out) to collapse, but I have gotten plenty of PARTS of it to collapse, resulting in every miner I have being either killed or bed ridden for the most part.

Damn this game is cruel and unforgiving, but I've never laughed harder. Not sure if it makes a difference, but I had a dwarf fall on another dwarf, possibly killing him. One dwarf fell due to a cave-in and fell right into my (not-yet-filled) mote two z-levels down, and I think he survived. Then moments later another dwarf fell due to another cave-in and landed in the same square as him, now only one is alive. XD

Anyway, I am giving up on that fort, every single method I try seems to either fail to get rid of the mountain, or cause a whole bunch of cave-ins.

Maybe... maybe I'll find some flatlands instead of trying to make them myself. This mountain destroying obviously isn't my forte. I've probably had more fail on this one project than I have in every failed fort before it.

But it held some good laughs, so all is good.

Well, this is actually only the first of three I need to do, so hopefully that will come in handy.

Actually, using ramps wouls be faster and safer. It does produce a heck of alot of lag, but just make sure there are no trees on it (which would cause a cave in) and you can leave it unsupervised, unlike channels. But however you want to do it.

What do you mean? Use ramps how?

34
Damn, that was a waste of time then. Thanks for the info.

I suppose it is time to channel the mountain now.

35
Nope, I have not made any changed to that file.

Ugh, I guess I'll keep going over it. I thought this would be easier than channeling every level... I guess I was wrong.

Another question, if I collapse a five Z level mountain, will every Z level be destroyed? That is was I am trying to do.

36
My question; can it be done?

I have mined all the way under it, and cut a channel all the way around it, as far as I can tell it is now a magical floating mountain.

I've checked it over many many times and I can't find any place I may have missed. I've even looked in VisualFortress and can't find any spots still connected.

Granted, it is a very large area I am trying to collapse. I could have missed something all thirty something times I have checked.  -_-

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: "Could not find path"

I don't know what you mean by cutoff point, but enlisting and unenlisting seems to have fixed the problems.

Why would a military dwarf know how to go up stairs and a non-military dwarf not?

Also, is there anyway for me to dig fairly deep down without everyone getting stuck?

Edit: Nevermind, the problem was only fix for a few moments. Now almost all of my dwarves are getting the error, not just my miners. It is "cancels store items in bin/store item in stockpile: could not find path".

There is no path problem, I don't know what stockpile they are trying to use, but none of them are blocked off.

So, I was digging downwards looking for metals and such. After I dig down to a certain point I am flooded with hundreds of these messages and my game starts going unplayabley slow. My miners can't seem to figure out how to get out of there.

There is a direct, large, and unblocked path to the surface. Why can't they use it?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Pick up those damn bones!

Thank you, I didn't realize "Dwarves Gather Refuse From Outside" was off by default.

Now, what to do with all these bones. I am pretty much out of crafts/furniture to decorate.

I guess I could make bolts...

DF Gameplay Questions / Pick up those damn bones!
« on: October 19, 2009, 05:11:39 pm »
So, I started on a map with skeletons and zombies. It was a damn good map, so I figured I'd deal with it.

Now, obviously I have no shortage of bone/skulls.

Now, I want to get them inside so they don't disappear. I have a standard refuse pile inside (with a door to contain the miasma) but my people are not hauling the bones (plenty of people with "No Job" available). I made a pile specifically for bones and skulls using the custom stockpile but they still will not haul the bones.

My craftdwarfs can use the bones, but must walk clear across the map to get to them, and I am worried they may get injured doing this. Plus, it is a waste of time.

Why will they not carry the bones?

DF Gameplay Questions / How uncommon is this?
« on: October 16, 2009, 12:52:48 pm »
I got a goblin attack on my fortress and there was a human in it. I always like looking at them to see what there history was, and I had collected a small list of names to look up.

I backed-up my save, abandoned my fortress, and started looking through legends. I saw this;

Is this a glitch or is a wagon supposed to be here? There was a human caravan that was attacked by some goblins, so I can only assume that is where it came from.

42
Thank you very much. I've managed to rig together some ineffectively placed forge temporarily.

At the very least, now I wont have some rampaging dwarf causing trouble.

43
Oh! That could possibly be an issue.

He is a "Skilled Metal Crafter". I have a magma forge that has recently lost power due to my attempt at a magma moat. Considering the level of magma has yet to settle I am not usre how I can build another forge.

Eh...

DF Gameplay Questions / A strange mood dwarf who is just being Idle...
« on: October 16, 2009, 12:32:09 am »
I had a dwarf go into a strange mood. Yay, right?

Well, then they go to the idle area (meeting area, or something) and have just been standing there. As far as I can tell they are not demanding anything, never claimed any workshop, nothing.

Am I missing something?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Advice on wall building?

You misunderstood my question. I am not asking how to build a wall. I am asking for advice on the layout of the wall itself.
