Oh, I feel silly now. That was pretty stupid of me to make that mistake, I apologize.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Jake Tamber's Questions

So, I have heard the horror stories about the Cave Spider in adventure mode, but not much about it in fortress mode. My question isn't "how do I kill it" but rather "how do I make sure it doesn't kill me?". Do they ever leave their caves? Will they come in and own my Dwarfs while they sleep? If I build a trade depot in there, will it kill elves for me?

Considering how deadly everyone says they are, would it be a good idea to simply flood the place with magma? (once I find the damn stuff, been digging forever).

More looking for general input than answers. Thank you.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Can't dig down further?

Embark locations have minimum and maximum elevations, and you cannot dig below the lowest elevation.

Besides, if you're looking for magma, digging down deeper won't help - you need to dig multiple shafts in different parts of the region.

I can TELL them to dig further, so I know I am not too low.

I'll try redoing my stairs, as I have the 10 level all on top of each others. Also, ramps confused me so I've never gotten around to using them, so that isn't the problem.

This is the 3rd fortress I have had the problem with.

After I dig down so far (in this case 10 level below my main part of my fortress) my dwarfs simply stop digging. They'll just have the "No Job" thing going on.

The one time I managed to get a dwarf down there, he just stayed down there and couldn't do anything.

Does anyone know why this is happening? Or how I fox it? I'd really like to dig down further, I'm looking for my magma.

Well, I got another Kobolt thief and my recruits killed it, either I misunderstood the situation or it was just a fluke.

I actually don't have a record keeper, I just have to wait and hope that a migrant happens to have the skill, right?

DF Gameplay Questions / Two more questions.
« on: October 04, 2009, 11:44:36 am »
1) So, I get a message that a Kobolt thief is in my fortress. Not really sure what this mean, I expected my dwarfs to do something, but they didn't. no big deal, I have no idea what he stole, but I didn't have anything too good anyway. So, I make a few of my people into recruits. The next one comes along a while later, and he passes right by the recruits and they do nothing to stop him.  :/
1a) How do I make my dwarfs kill these thieves?
1b) How to I tell what they stole?

2) I now have some artifacts due to a possessed dwarfs. I know I can see these using the "l" key. How do I tell where they are and take measures to better protect them? Also, are they just super valuable "normal" items? Or do they do anything different?

Again, thank you in advanced.

I thought it had to be 'so many' squares wide? Well, we'll see. Thank you.

Wow, I am pleasantly surprised by all the pleasant helpful people here. Again, thank you all very much for the help so far. Sorry for my questions being pretty basic, I am still trying to fully grasp the game.

I have another question, if you re all willing to take a look at it. Since I am not good at making diagrams, I just took a screenshot.

Can a wagon go over that? I made it four tiles thick, but I am unsure if the side count. I don't wanna (at least yet) make anything complicated like retracting it, I just wanted to give the wagons a straight shot to my trade depot.

Thank you very much people.

I now understand the cavein problems and will do it right next time. The building issues, I am not sure what I was doing wrong the first time (I actually tried several times) but it is now working. I must have been doing something weird.

However, I have another question. I embarked on a very cold map. My entire map, including the road I build, says that the wagons cannot go on it. Is this due to the cold? Or could it be something else?

I lost two of my dwarfs, am pretty much out of food, the wagons passed me up, and I keep getting bothered by gnomes. Not a great start! XD - But, I suppose I learned some things that will help me in my next fortress. I just wanna get this wagon problem resolved before I abandon the fortress.

(Sorry, that looks crappy)
I simply can't build anything on the "floor" due to there being a building there already. My second story look pretty much identical to my first, just replace the doors with walls and have a downwards staircase.

However, what has be confused on the mining of the hill, if I did not write it out very clearly, is there was nothing above me to fall down. I was mining the highest possible level, so I don't get what fell.

Thank you in advanced for your time.

So, I wanted to work on flattening my map a bit more (mostly for aesthetic purposes) and there was a two level hill that I was going to mine out of existence. Now, I started AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL which was roughly 9x9 in size. It collapsed, killing my two best miners, one of whom was my only good gem guy. Can someone please explain this to me? Thank you.

And a second question. I decided to try my hand at building above-ground structures. So, I am building this thing (damn it takes al ong time/lot of stone) and I finish my second story+roof. Now I realize, I can't place workshops, piles, or anything else inside of it. Am I doing something wrong? Or are they just totally useless?

I'll look up how to do the military thing and try it once I get home. About the path finding thing, I have tried making him simply build stairs (I am sure I am using stairs) upwards but he will only build so far.

As I said, I'll try to get him to do the military thing, thanks.

Alright, I started my first fortress and pretty much all is going well except a few things.

1) I have one miner (the first person my "u" list) who is about six level down underground, and he will not come back up. There are plenty of jobs to do, but he always says "no jobs" in that "u" menu. He just sits there, if I set a job for him to do DOWN THERE he will do it, but not up higher. Why can't I get him back up? I asume he will starve soon.

2) Again, in the "u" menu I have two people's names flashing, why is this? They have been flashing for some time now.

Thank you.
