DF Community Games & Stories / Re: The Hall of Legends
« on: October 23, 2012, 11:45:55 pm »
I lend my weighty, years-old forum membership whole heartedly to the vote for SeveredCoils! It deserves inclusion. More focused on narrative than the blood, gore, and chaos that often defines a Dwarf Fortress tale -and yet not lacking that in the slightest.

I'm just hoping I can keep the quality good enough for the last couple of votes I need before December!

Votes? Is there some contest where I should go and vote your story itself and/or narrative skills as best?

Edit: Found and voted. Readers, this tale ought to be included in the Hall of Fame. I urge you to strongly consider whether it is worthy, and if you find it so, go and vote!
My choice is obvious. Now, make yours! It is the sticky'd thread at the top of the category where this thread is listed.

The pun thread... it lives??

Let's do this folks! Formica, may she rest in piece. Until this thread is locked, nothing is set in stone!

Let's see your best efforts, with originality! :-D

As for furniture puns: you might say I'm the chair of the board, you know? I've got a leg up on everyone! Play your flutes and finials, let the Chippendales dance; take your posts and get ready to shake your seats! And remember, any stool belongs in the rest room!

If this makes no sense to you, read the spoiler.

The writing is at least as good as ever. It's great that you turned to a story of survival and isolation rather than a straightforward accounting of events. I'm anxious to learn of the fate of SeveredCoils' greatest champion: Archibold!

But please, tell the story as you see fit. Catching up has been quite enjoyable.

Quietust, Dermonster, glad to see you're both still active. It might take days to get a grip on the state of the game lately; could anyone tell me how it's running? Will it still bring my computer to the brink of gibbering madness as quickly as ever? I'm hopeful of enjoying it once again.

The military isn't coming. Not unless it's awesomely dramatic and last-minute. That's how these things work!

You're a junky, so why not drink the molotov cocktail? ;)

Meh.
At this rate, I won't even have cable. Seriously, when discussing the possibility of children, we were saying we'll just buy DVDs for them to watch and maybe use Netflix. Why does TV suck so much now? :/

GORE!

Well, he could always go out in a bright, short flash of glory. But then we don't get to see the underverse or whatever is waiting beyond that portal. Build ye the holy hand grenade or go to the PA system or something. We're chock full of ideas!

to paraphrase: "I built a goblin torture chamber and tested it. It was everything you could hope for."
You don't disappoint, Sphalerite.

Oh, the memories. Good ol' Cartoon Network!

I miss the days when that channel didn't suck. I think I'd hate it if I were a child now.

Ah, I'm liking Soulwynd's "Thinking man's analysis of the FPS".

Sounds like a fun game. Sort of wish I had time for games these days.

Jeez, someone was way too enthusiastic writing the description of how the plane crashed.

It's the United States Senate.  Melodrama is all they have in their pitiful little lives.

As a bit of an editor myself with a stick up my ass for formality, I'm a little shocked at how many contractions there are in this file.

I didn't look back a page and realize this topic had previously been inactive since September. I haven't been here in a few months, you know. Anyway... it was the Senate publication you posted a link to.

Make me believe Architect.

Yes, sir.
My apologies: there was no sarcasm in that statement. I really do respect you, after months of reading and enjoying your posts. The problem with text is that you can read anything into it, even with a friendly emoticon afterward. No condescension was intended.

A document about the oil spill was brought up. Comments were made about its general bad quality and its reflection on the state of the US Government. This thought has been brewing for a while: about our government being designed to represent the people, and the way that it actually does when you consider that we choose our representatives, and consider the general attitude of its citizens.
So, corruption and idiocy, if present in our government (along with a general apathy as reflected by its actions before, during, and after the oil spill), are reflections of its citizens. And thus to continue to discuss fixing our problems with good politics is rather futile.

Admittedly, not the best tie-in. Defending it beyond that would be pointless, because there was nothing more to it originally. But this has always been used to discuss politics surrounding the spill and various related topics, such as the lack of responsibility by any party throughout the incident. It's always more interesting to zoom out and look at the big picture, going from a single document to the government it represents, isn't it? I thought it was an interesting topic of conversation.

Anyway, the concept of an "antihero" only exists so long as an archetype of the hero exists. The concept of Evil exists only where there is Good to compare it to. Blurring the lines between good and bad has little meaning to this generation because we have no common understanding of the two, and thus the concept of the antihero is much less potent to us.

It's lost its great power as a story element because it has been used exhaustively, and because most people don't really believe in right and wrong anymore :)
That was the relevance of bringing in the philosophical analysis. Sorry for not clarifying immediately.
