DF General Discussion / Great things that start with "M"
« on: October 26, 2010, 10:15:20 pm »
Well, I think we all know what we're here for. I'll start us off with a good ole dwarven standby, though not the most obvious possibility.

The great copulation of Armok's rage, the power of virtual death, I call upon...

[M]anslaughter!

MODIFIED DEMON FIGHT!!!!!!!

Oh, hell yes.
Laughing as always in appreciation at the well-done little jokes. I like how you come up with new ways to handle the addition of more "characters" all the time!

33
use the sacrificial animals to reveal the demons in such a way as to keep them penned in and helpless before our marksdwarves.

Hey, I think I might have come up with a very dwarfy method for seeing all or most of the demons within the pit!

Bear with me here, as this requires the unfortunate sacrifice of some kittens or somesuch critters:

Step 1: Hollow out a room directly above the top of the demon pit, and place a support in a spot corresponding to an open space on the level below.

Step 2: Starting from that same room, dig a staircase upwards and hollow out the area above your first room, channeling out the floors surrounding the one over the support.

Step 3: Place animals in cages on spots surrounding the support on the first floor, and prepare shooting galleries accessed from outside as desired.

Step 4: Attach the support and cages individually to distant levers.

Step 5: Seal the room, completely, and thus seal the only exit from the room above simultaneously.

Step 6: Pull the lever! (the support lever), then release the animals as needed to reveal the occupants of the room!

Step 7: Save a few demons for me!

Your faithful servant,
~Archibold
(Thanks to Quietust, as always, for making the letters for me.)

P.S.: Don't share with anyone that Archibold can't write, or he'll have my head. He says that a warrior need not write his own legends or some crap like that, but he's still proud. ~Quietust

Haha! Well-made joke. Enjoying the updates! Any news on the main mission?

Well, you know, if you want to get all philosophical, evil benefits from chaos and spreads it. So, evil promotes chaos. But you're right: chaos doesn't really equal or mean anything specific. It just means the lack of order.

It's one of those words which is defined only by what it is not.

Posting to track. Unfortunately, I have no programming skills and little time to dedicate to helping. However, I could do wiki page revisions or similar logistics management if the need arises.

So... the bottom kill apparently worked.

Looks like my derail attempt was cut off quickly.

Waiting for reverse of that to be said in a few days, i am.

hur hur, I get it!
Really, though, I didn't expect it to stick. Apparently it has. Are we supposed to forgive BP now or boycott them out of their share of our national market? Who sets the tone so I know what is socially acceptable?

The zanbatou exists and worked, according to the Metropolitan Museum.  It's not as large as advertised in Rurouni Kenshin.

Well, there you go.

But without going too far into the obvious, Cthulhu, I think we can all acknowledge an ideal relative weight for applying a maximum kinetic energy. Too heavy or too light and you can't exert maximum force relative to your strength and leverages.

All of that aside: a sword designed to kill a horse and rider simultaneously (by swinging something massive at them by hand) is pretty absurd, and even more entertaining when you realize someone really thought it was a good idea. Sure, it worked, and so would exploding frisbees. But that makes them no less ridiculous and entertaining!

Toady's going to have to take notice of that and at least give some attention to fixing it. There are various obvious things that should prevent this from happening, from supply lines, time and expense to relative possible gain. You wouldn't pillage something that has nothing to offer you. And you can't afford to run a campaign every week no matter what kind of taxes you levee; you just couldn't feed or organize your army to do that.

I think you probably misheard, I'm not sure how something like that would be more effective than the normal blunt weapons.

Taking the cake for most ridiculous anime inspired made up weapon someone swears up and down is real, though, would be this thing someone told me on Twocansandstring.

they had some interesting tools that I am aware of, including what was essentially an exploding Frisbee (no joke)

Of course, he couldn't cite it, and googling it produces no results.

There's something in that roro kenshin anime or whatever it's called about a supposedly real concept weapon that was never practical: basically a massive sword meant to take out horse and rider simultaneously. Made up or not, it's preposterous and entertaining.

Several other programs are being created to help you get past DF's bad interface. "Rune Smith" is probably your best bet; just do a forum search. Not sure if it's one or two words.
