DF Gameplay Questions / Re: The Little Questions Thread

Possibilities:

You have told dwarves to ignore food: {o}, {f}.
Doh, that was exactly it.  No idea how I managed to do that.  Didn't even know you *could* do that (which I probably made obvious by asking the question).  Thanks so much!

Sure, very glad to help.

I re-read the last two posts. I simply didn't understand the context of the most recent one before, and now I do. Interesting. Eager to see what Servu gave up by uttering that word.

Well. That's gratitude for you.

Haha.

Possibilities:

Your dwarves have too many hauling labors. You should have a few dwarves that haul nothing but food.

You have told dwarves to ignore food: {o}, {f}.

There is no path between the food to be stored, the dwarves, and the stockpiles (very unlikely given your description).

You have "Dwarves Stay Inside" and there is no underground path between the food, dwarves, and stockpiles. Also unlikely.

My bet is on one of the first two.

Many of the ores and rocks in DF have incorrect relative melting points. He could just fix any one of the appropriate types to make it magma proof.

Only for specific strains of bacteria that tend to threaten teeth and gums, apparently. Not really useful as an antiseptik.

It's well known that the human mouth is a breeding ground for bacteria; using saliva as a disinfectant would probably propigate bacteria.

DF General Discussion / Re: Hydra Test

If I remember the way Hydras work right now, the game only asks after a round of combat, "Was a brain detached? Yes? Die." without checking if other viable brains are still attached.

I believe that is fixed for Hydras; they can have heads cut off in worldgen and then arrive headless at your fortress. The problem is that they bleed out.

Well salvia for example is antiseptik. It would depend on the used plants.

FYI, saliva isn't an antiseptik. However I don't see anything on Wikipedia about Salvia being one either.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salvia

It would be best to ask a botanist and/or an historian about the uses and effects of flower petals as soap substitutes.

the other is stuck in some glitch like state and cannot move (also for about thirty years).
Did you ever get Dwarf Companion to function?

Story!

I was just cooking up a recipe for encouraging you to write without sounding demanding or entitled. Something along the lines of extreme flattery tempered with minced medium flattery and minced begging.

Salvia, people, not saliva.

Some people are completionists, and some people have an attitude of just getting the game over with. These people are generally bugged by sandbox games or games with lots of options.

It's simply an obstinate difference in tastes in some cases. You can't really get anywhere by debate with someone who fundamentally can't enjoy the genre.

That said, some of these games are repetitive, and do break your immersion in the story with their nonsensical sidequests.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?

Usually dwarves that are built up on bookkeeping and other social skills are beastly-strong, and goblins aren't that dangerous at the worst of times. Most mayors can wrestle a whole siege naked if they don't take an arrow through the heart. In the next version, we will no longer see dwarves become weightlifters by doing bookkeeping :)

I think it's time to stop bothering. He just said I'm "trying to play moral guardian" after I carefully explained that the issue here is ethical, and distinctly not moral. He's not reading what anyone is writing, nor does he care to consider any other point of view properly. It's definitely time to stop trying before anything goes south.
