DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Archery
« on: September 13, 2010, 12:28:15 am »
When I tried to use them, they fired all of their ammo for training, then left nothing for combat. If I disabled training, they simply didn't reload. So it's an "either works or not" situation, i.e. yes, it is bugged. Waiting for the next version.

About goblin civs dying off, you can simply set the history generation time shorter.

1. You can wall yourself in and wait until they leave.
2. You can build an automatic goblin grinder and let it deal with them.
3. You can carve some fortifications near where they stand, and have a rookie marksdwarf shoot them to death (it works in 40d at least).
4. You can use cave-ins creatively.
5. You can use magma, given that you have some near the ground. If you want to pump it up from the magma sea, they will leave before you could finish it.

Ammo is bugged in the current version. It either works or not, but usually not. I chose not to use marksdwarves until this issue is fixed, however useful they are.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: No one will trade at my depot...
« on: September 11, 2010, 03:29:57 pm »
Either set the depot to allow any dwarf to trade. Then, if there is someone who doesn't have a job, he will come and trade. Or, clear all labours for the trader (I usually do this). When he is finished with whatever he is doing, he will trade. He may go to eat/drink/sleep/break though.

There may be a need, for example if you want to move large amounts of fluid that isn't pressurised.

Plus, for a raising bridge, you only need some stones (possibly less than the width of the passage), and don't need to be produced in advance (though it needs 2 steps of construction).

The goblins attack when you have enough wealth. So start producing something valuable. I usually get attacked by them in the 3rd or 4th year, but once I started making lots of stone crafts at the very beginning, and they came at first winter.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Aquifer power plant
« on: September 11, 2010, 12:00:08 pm »
How does the game calculate if there is a flow or not? I did the following:

Code: [Select]
   WWW     %%_____
Q__________#######Q

% - screw pump

Now, it once works, other times it doesn't. I remember doing something similar in one of my old fortresses back in 40d, and it worked. Has anyone changed since then?

DF Gameplay Questions / Aquifer power plant
« on: September 11, 2010, 05:55:27 am »
I tried to make a power plant by draining an aquifer into another, but it doesn't seem to work. It looks like this (side view):

Code: [Select]
   WWW
Q__________ ####
###########^_____Q

Q - aquifer
W - water wheel
# - wall
_ - floor
^ - ramp

Shouldn't the water be flowing fro one aquifer to another? How would something like this work?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Sinking the map
« on: September 07, 2010, 02:22:47 pm »
So, I read on the wiki that anything dropped into the magma sea is destroyed. So, I thought, what if I sink the entire map into the magma sea? Is that even possible?

So I decided to try it FOR SCIENCE! It will take a long time, and will be pretty complicated due to the magma sea not being a straight out sea, but a complicated cavern-like system with lots of semi-molten rock in the middle. If it isn't possible to sink everything, I will sink most I can.

What do you think?

DF Gameplay Questions / Underground trees?
« on: September 07, 2010, 01:37:21 pm »
So I embarked on a new site, and started carving out my fortress. As I dug into the soil, underground saplings started to appear immediately. I thought I have to find the first cavern for that.

Or just save the seed and generate with that.

Try using the burrow to restrict your miner to go down the water. But first be sure you have some spare picks so you can continue mining even if your miner dies.

You should find tetrahedrite in the diorite, which can be smelted for copper if you don't have a better material for weapons. However, flint should contain iron. In DF2010, there are usually tons of iron in every sedimentary layer.
