Other Games / BYOND Cowed... now open-source!
« on: August 30, 2010, 04:43:48 pm »
Just tried Cow RP. Holy hell it's better than Cowed.

Frankly I don't see how this could ever be, since I think the skin makes you puke blood.

Anyway, I come bringing good news for the Bay12 community: Cowed is now open-source and anyone may download and host their own server. It's basically public domain, which is the same lack of a license SS13 was released with.

You'll need to install the MySQL database server to make it work. I don't recommend stripping the MySQL functionality as the save files tend to get larger as more players connect, and w/o save files the players will all be loaded in the memory.

If anybody wants to yell at me, I refer to the goon forums where you're free to flame me without getting banned.

Bye! I hope you guys will have better luck with games like SS13 and Cowed than I have.

It's called Data's always been a powerhouse that pumps out constant drama and no one really should care anymore.

Because I should totally continue hosting a server while nobody gives a crap about me.

So your saying you want us to draw exactly what you tell us with a preset design leaving us almost no creative input on the drawing.

What I'm saying is that I'll let you guys draw the stuff and come up with a design, but I'm going to have to change it if it isn't going to work out. Which is a good thing, since I'll be using it to prevent stuff like people making the icons for a teleporter that can go anywhere with perfect accuracy and no side-effects, which would suck when it's used against you by the only person who has a patent on it, who proceeds to steal your valuables and run.

Let me assure you that my intention is not to disrupt your creativity, but rather to prevent this "feature" from being abused. I don't want to end up with a bunch of super weapons in the game that lead to nothing but trouble, but have nothing against people coming up with reasonable suggestions. And I'm not going to finalize it unless we've talked it over and we agree on the idea.

Other Games / console: revival!
« on: July 05, 2010, 02:31:44 pm »
I just wanted to announce the revival of console (with benefits for pixel artists and designers!) as I've got some  more time to work on it now thanks to extra help over at the Cowed front.

If you guys are still interested, feel free to apply to help create a game. Hope to see you on the other side!

Your pal,
Data (Mood: :o)

P.S. Please don't ban me. :-X

Is this still online? I'd love to give a look.
I know something about programming, and this looks cool :]

I can put it online, but you have to be on the closed testers list to be able to log in.
The forum is @ http://console.androiddata.net and you can register w/ your BYOND key.

Sorry for the late response, but I simply don't know what to turn console into.

Allowing people to teleport everywhere is just going to make people mad because some don't have teleporters. Preventing people from doing so gets the ones who do have teleporters worked up because there's nothing to do apart from dicking around.

There needs to be more to do, and frankly I haven't had many ideas yet. If you guys know of anything that would help turn this into an actual game that would be great. All I can think of is the easiest idea which is to turn it into a role-playing game like SS13/Cowed :P but I have no idea if you guys even like the prospect of such an idea.

If there's anybody still left alive, perhaps you could inspire me? :(

Ideas for console so far:
- Implementing a HUD-based inventory system (like SS13, with slots you can equip clothes to)
- Getting a newer/better base mob and clothes for it. I'll need assistance with this, but I already have the mob, just not the clothes.
- More "sub levels" for the underground base and the ability to traverse them using ladders and elevators. Maybe being able to use wiring to go through them.
- Rougher control over the environment. Destruction of walls, manipulation/destruction of doors, etc.
- Materials Transfer being a player-controlled company, can only produce so much and uses "credits" to buy equipment. Gold->credits so you can make a profit and continue existing.
- Every player should start out with a select amount of gold.
- Possibility for the creation of GUI's in Excode. Start with simple GUI's, move onto more complex GUI's. This should be reasonably easy to implement, by the way.
- Basic environment system with air and radiation (though not advanced means of pumping them; on an area basis so it doesn't lag like heck).
- A better trigger system which can be used to trigger all sorts of things. e.x., buttons that can be placed on walls that send their press to a computer, pressure-sensitive tiles & tables, motion sensitive sensors.
- With the above maybe lethal systems such as turrets. Such scenarios such as a motion sensitive sensor activating a turret causing it to shoot at the last known location the player was on.

I'd just like to leave this here. Those of you who were interested in SS13DL with its Heroes game mode and that can actually sprite things: please e-mail me (data@androiddata.net) if you're interested in working with me & Lyndon on a new game.

Please don't bash me. :(

Yeah. I'm trying to upgrade my server so it has 4 gigs of RAM. I'm also trying to install VMware ESXi, which is a bare metal hypervisor. Except it won't install, because my network card (an Atheros card) isn't on the list of supported NICs.

I plan to have this sorted out tomorrow: I'll go pick up a proper NIC, plug it in, and get ESXi installed. Then all I have to do is move a 60 gig behemoth of a file over and the server should be back up some time later, website and game.

I logged into Dwarfed for a bit and looked around. Nothing like Cowed at all, so I guess I overreacted. A lot, given that I reacted harshly irl. Didn't pay enough attention to the rest of the content and too much attention to the people hurling insults at me. I'm sorry for the pages and trouble I may have caused with the moderators of this board, and now that things have finally cooled down I can ask:

Now what direction are you guys trying to take this game into?

Because the guy currently running it is an egotistical self-centred control freak!

And that's typically how others - especially communities such as this one - perceive me. And yet, you're the ones that want to take control by whichever means possible.

Can the flaming stop now? You've already shown to me that this community isn't any better than the SA community with the lack of respect you show towards me. I may have overreacted, but you certainly didn't help to calm it down.

I've unlocked the forum to guests. Originally I had the console forum locked to increase the odds that someone who had just registered would go through the next step of making a post, but now it's become unnecessary.

One last response:

Also data, what makes you think we HAVE to help ANYONE?

Because it's polite!

Anyway, I'm going to stop now as I think I've rammed my point down enough. If there's anyone left who does want to help Cowed, I'm not going to stop that. But please, for the love of god, don't make this a duplicate of Cowed. If you do, you bet I'm going to send all the griefers after you. :)

Just because one person said something, you hate Bay12 now?

There is such a thing as representation which I have yet to fully grasp in communities such as yours. You have this "group" but no-one is there to represent the group on the outside.

And my monkey brain makes me think that Apple Master = a member of the Bay12 community, and if he says something bad then ALL Bay12ers automatically agree. Don't want this to happen? Pick a representative. Whoops, not possible in your anarchistic group.

1) The titles are similar, as they both end with "-ed". OH WOW THAT MEANS IT'S A RIPOFF not

In combination with the other things...

2) The premise of the game is similar if not the same. It's not similar. Cowed is an RPG in which you are a cow. Dwarfed is so far Dwarf Fortress but you control one dwarf

Swapping cows with dwarfs is a way to make the same game but having it look different. You control a dwarf whereas in Cowed you control a cow. Big whoop; same deal.

3) The main post says that discussion of Dwarfed likely means that the Cowed discussion is going to die. What would cause that, other than it being nearly identical? We are not a charity, we're entitled to, y'know supporting games from our own crew, so to speak

You've clearly shown not to be charity. You don't support Cowed other than trying to get it open-sourced! Heck, this may well be an attempt at forcing it to open-source!

4) Evilgrim claims that the reason for the existence of Dwarfed is because Cowed wasn't made open-source. People are wrong

Perhaps, but his statement does make sense if you combine it with the others: name is similar, apart from a few changes (cows -> dwarfs) the game appears to be the same as well, from open-source hype chatting to complete silence.

Wait, so you're afraid of the fact that we might get somewhere, whereas you haven't? I mean wow, if we deliver on our promises that means we must be bad. Also, how would we be leaving you chained to our server rules and features, as should be obvious, you do actually have Cowed,Console, etc.

I'm afraid that if Dwarfed does get somewhere, people will leave Cowed because you've deliberately chosen to make the games similar sans a few graphical differences. I'm afraid that if this happens, my time spent on Cowed will have been a big waste of time. I'm also afraid that you lot will refuse to give out even the host files like SA did and leave everyone hanging on your rules.

I may be doing the same with the latter, but at least I knew that when I started I wasn't trying to steal someone else's game.
