Crap, just reread the OP... Hm, I've already started writing, in fact, about five days ago. I hope it doesn't matter as long as I don't participate in the race to be the ultimate winner of the contest; I haven't registered on the site.
I'd like to know, do we submit our creations to this thread somehow for criticism? This far, Dasleah has been extremely helpful, and if he continued to be such, that would be awesome. Although, I guess, he is going to be busy with his own script.
Maybe, someone who doesn't write himself, but still follows this thread?

Although it's not my kind of music, I think... it's the kind of music I would listen to, while writing Othor II. Well, I started it with Nirvana, and intermittently used Mark A. Pullen's soundtrack to a game "Sauerbraten". Which goes into an extremely heavy category on my list... It's like, I need more energy in music, to have it in writing.

Thanks, used the Mibbit link.
Wow, crazy people... I'm strangely getting cyberpunk vibes, with all these unrelated conversations going on simultaneously. Well, I suppose it would be advantageous for birthing new ideas.

You mean this weird thing called SQL?

Or I just shouldn't embarrass myself with my ignorance?...

A somewhat relevant song... Hm, a kind of bump on my part. Not an update yet.
And an even more relevant video of the song. Is he playing a mandola there?

Hm. Can anyone explain to a person absolutely ignorant of the workings of this IRC thing, but having a default IRC client installed, how you get there? Or point me to a topic (I'm sure one exists), where Bay12 IRC channel requisites (or whatever) can be found.

Come on! If the player is gonna be so bug-thirsty, he's gonna find something anyway. I think as far as this game's goals go, the population slice at examination idea is sufficient. Maybe there should be a list of recently tracked people, and a normal non-OCD player shouldn't need more than a hundred of them.
So, no one's come up with any prototypes? By the way, which language would you go programming this thing in? Putting aside the fact that most commercial games are programmed in C++ or C#, is there a language that's especially fit to handling population statistics?

Again! >:(

Ok. I was going to ask, if anyone is going to write with a partner. I recently found out, that voicing your plot to someone is very useful for moving it along. For that purpose I've got my sister, even if it's not brainstorming, as she usually resorts to "uh"'s, but beside that she's very much into age psychology, and I seek her help for realistic character development.

A slider instead of a button, interacting with your zooming? An ability to position the camera (the view) vertically or move into isometric view?
Anyway
Also http://www.boingboing.net/features/morerock.html is interestingly relevant.
Interestingly relevant to the whole Game Idea division of the forum.
The programming of this game should really start with graphs and charts, mathematical simulation. Although, I'm a layman here, and cannot participate with anything but doodles and writing.

I don't see why sampled population wouldn't sleep. There may be a problem with syncing different activities, but it's for programmers to solve.

I've been trying to visualize the interface (poorly),
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
and I think that simish-civish layout should work. First, you move between levels with a button, like in Sims, second, you've got your ministers for stuff, to notify you when something need attention. You can move camera freely, but you can see in realtime only what your friendly units see, and here friendly are only your spies and surveillance. And, maybe, police, some kind of CIA.

This part of the forum isn't drying up, it's just much harder to create something than to throw dust into the air over some completely subjective notion...

To get back on topic: I'll once again (in this forum) be as bold as to propose making a design document for this thing. I think there are enough basic ideas to start assembling something more structured. Someone could even sketch some concept art, or program some simple simulations...

Hey, I've just found in Celtx an option for an audio play. I wonder, do we have a demand for such a genre? And if it is any different from writing a trite screenplay.

An AI for population statistics like... in Civilization? But I'm not sure. Of course, even if I'm correct, a much more sophisticated AI.

I'm completely out of tune, but some side of the concept, the picture in the beginning, and something from my own ideas, gave birth to this idea:

You are a single governor-tyrant, who has this city in his iron grip, and all the stuff you talk about, but, being a tyrant, you always have to fight rebels... or, gradually, in the course of the game, the rebellion appears and grows. You are represented by a game world person who lives and rules from his/her high castle, and the game ends, when the rebels reach you, and overthrow the tyranny, via the means of assassination.

I don't know if I understood the problem of nation-in-a-building correctly, but for some reason I had the visions of Bladerunner as a solution. I mean, any single building being explicitly multi-cultural and buzzing - one corner is occupied by Chinese restaurants, another side is all European, everywhere bright signboards, maybe in a different corner a war is going on...

Hey, and shoot 20 short movies to illustrate each year with a story! :) Like, you know, amateur theatre sped up to x1.5.
