Mess around with the sound settings (first check if it'll run without any sound)? Try enabling/disabling EMS in the Dosbox config file? Try upping the CPU cycles (CTRL+F12) over 10 000 before running the game?

Probably not it, but certain DRMs require that you mount the cd-rom using "mount <drive letter> <path> -t cdrom".

I just want to say I completely disagree about the graphics part in modern games. It's nowhere near as bad as it used to be in the early-mid 2000s, because advancements in hardware have slowed down considerably. Developers seem downright reluctant to even go with the realistic route and often go in a cartoony/caricatural direction. The things that are actually taxing are most often simply badly optimized (especially if they're ports).
Your mid-range desktop computer can last a long time compared to an early 2000s computer in terms of what it can run. It won't be high settings and you'll miss out on the latest buzzword technology (what even are 5.1 pixel shaders and who cares?), but at least it'll run at all.

And while I will agree that the indie market is overflooding with hipsters and lazy immitators, it can still occasionally give us a really good game that AAA studios could not produce due to cost-versus-profit aspects. For better or worse, the indie market feels a lot like the 90s gaming market in terms of what it outputs. Lots of immitators, some failed experiments, and a few games that stand out and do something great.

Somehow I get strong Star Command vibes from this. That is to say, having seen how that turned out, I'm very wary of this. It's just the over-emphasis on pretty, pre-set animations and attempting to do a "humorous" story and setting that reminds me of that.

Maybe it'll actually turn out good, but I wouldn't put money on it.

I'm not really sure what people expect of Max Payne. He does what he does really well, and it's kind of hard to engage in diplomacy with people who throw molotovs at the sight of you. "He didn't single-handedly hold off an army of 100+ people going after his client's uncooperative family? Pff, what a loser!"

Do you see the problem?  In, say... I'm actually struggling to think of a game where you shoot a bunch of white Americans for money and aren't a villain protagonist.  Like, I can't even make my point because of this.  Someone want to help?  The closest game I can think of is Dues Ex but you actually are a villain protagonist at the start of that series, you just don't realize it.
Hitman? Particularly in Blood Money. And he's a Romanian-made clone, apparently working for a British agency.

Slowbeef and Diabetus: American Let's Players. Their joint channel is Retsupurae, where they riff on bad video LPs, as well as on longplays (commentaryless playthroughs made by someone else) of games, usually really bad ones, or at least ones most people wouldn't want to play personally, but would want to see for the entertaining/riffable stuff. Separately they also do LPs and streams with viewer calls. Notable example - Dark Seed.
Moderate swearing.

Two Best Friends: Canadian Let's Players. Despite the name, there can be anywhere between 2 to 4 people involved. They do both first-impression compilations of gameplay (for Machinima) as well as full LPs. Mostly restricted to console games, usually Japanese stuff. Tend to be self-referential. Notable example - Silent Hill Downpour.
Moderate swearing.

Bro Team: Canadian Let's Player. Actually usually one guy. Does compilation videos, parodying "bro" mentality, or just flying off into inanity. Also does streams of random games with multiple other people. Notable example - Mass Effect 3.
Moderate-high swearing.

In a way, the first presentation reminds me of AssCreed 1's, in that while it certainly looks good, I can't help the feeling we might end up having to carry out a very similar sequence of events a hundred times in the actual game. Like I doubt they can actually do the whole nemesis system without shoving in a bunch of repetition, especially with those cutscenes.
Plus I question how a player would leave an orc boss alive and "leave him to burn". I can't imagine any player leaving anything alive like that (unless it's a cutscene you have no control over).

Still, so far it looks like one of the better LOTR-license games (since most are pretty bad and break lore even more).

Also, speaking of similarities to AssCreed,

Guys, I need your help. There was this game I played, back on the PS2(Or Gamecube) that was about trying to take down an evil djinn. I remember it was a dungeon-crawl-y sort of thing, where you had a world outside the dungeons, and every night you went into the dungeon and fought in a third-person brawler. There were mimic chests, and I remember the town being filled with shops and characters you can recruit. I THINK there was a catgirl in there, and later on in the world ('Cause you can travel the world inbetween dungeons) there being another djinn you could recruit. The opening scene, where the djinn is summoned, I remember he ate someone for shits and giggles and then burned down a village. MIGHT'VE been yours, I don't quite remember. So yeah, PS2/Gamecube dungeon crawler with RPG elements that allows recruiting of characters and has an overarching plot about a djinn.
Sorry about the clutter, I'm writing this in what I consider the morning.
Dark Cloud?

The early combat they showed made me think of QTEs, so I'll at least hold off until they show off the combat system a little better.

Batman Forever for the SNES, played with a friend cooperatively for the first time. The unintuitive controls and general crappiness made it a pretty hillarious experience.

The dev team is dedicated to keeping the atmosphere family friendly.
What? What does that mean? Who exactly is this being marketted to?

They made a game called deadly games of death?
No.
I think you mean deadly rooms of death.
But still no, as far as I can tell.
Oh shoot, my bad. I just saw the DROD game subforums on the same forum as theirs and assumed it's cause they're the same people, but apparently their forum is just hosted as a subforum on the DROD game creators' forums. :V

Here's a neat thing I've recently come across - a Quest for Glory like Adventure game with RPG elements, set in Norse mythology. To anyone unfamiliar with the QfG series, that means an Adventure game with upgradeable stats, multiple solutions to puzzles (usually one for each of the archetypes - fighter/mage/thief) and a combat system.

Quote
Heroine's Quest: The Herald of Ragnarok is an adventure / RPG hybrid. Like in many adventure games, you have a world to save, and must use your wit, guile and inventory to puzzle your way through. Like in many roleplaying games, you can customize your character with various classes and skills, and must train yourself in combat to stand a chance against the fierce monsters in your way.

The game is designed in the spirit and atmosphere of the classics, and strives to have the same high quality of art, music, and plot. With multiple character classes and several solutions to many puzzles, the game will have excellent replayability.

Download and read more about it here

Alternatively, it might also be Lure of the Temptress.
