DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dual-wield and striking question 31.17

I don't think you can twist a weapon using the "aimed attack" menu, since an embedded weapon will disappear from said menu, but pressing towards the enemy to autoattack will make you twist the weapon and pull it out immediately.  Important to remember if there's a huge battle raging and you're not paying much attention to combat messages and suddenly for some reason you can't use your sword in the aimed attack menu anymore.

If you look at the last panel, the glow seems to fall off when Jack removes the sword, so it seems it was indeed from the Beat Mesa rather than the sword itself.  Whether this means anything, particularly since seven panels were taken to portray an event that would normally seem insignificant, is up to you to decide.

Here's the Leibniz formula for pi.  This is only an approximation using a non-infinite number of terms, of course, but you can keep going for as long as you like to get as much accuracy as you like.  Unfortunately, it converges very slowly, but it will work.

However, the way science is supposed to work, the winner is the one who can summon the largest mountains of evidence to support their claim.  This does not necessarily have to be the majority position at first, but it will eventually become such if evidence keeps appearing.

I'm still amazed nobody linked to Creating Friendly AI yet.

Oh wait, I just did.  Go on, have a look- it's quite good, if a bit long.

I'm still confused on the MEOWMEOWMEOW thing.

Did I miss something while reading?  :-\

The MEOW code is actually genetic code, with M, E, O, and W subbed for A, T, C, and G (can't remember exact correlation).  If you look, you'll see that it's not just MEOWMEOWMEOW, but more like MEOMEWOEWMEOWMEOWOWMEOWME etc.

The secret Jaspers told Rose was the word "MEOW", which unlocked said genetic code from her subconscious.  (This, of course, raises the question of what it was doing there in the first place).

The trick is to get extra flow by using a stack of pumps say, ten wide, with a single-tile-wide exit pipe.  This will cause water to flow down said pipe at ten tiles per tick (so long as the pumps stay supplied, which is harder than it looks without simply using a cistern stack), giving a highly convincing simulation of "high-pressure" water flow.

This is still just using the teleportation model of water pressure, of course.  I'm not sure whether fast water flow in this manner can crush people against walls, and would be interested to find out (particularly since the canonical hydrodynamics I remember indicates that teleporting water does not push creatures or items, only "flowing" (I.E. diffusing) water does).

Uh.

Okay.

Well, I'm still not quite sure that she's actually going insane, but "insanely powerful" would certainly be an adequate description.

General Discussion / Re: What happens if a black hole enters a black hole?
« on: September 26, 2010, 09:09:05 pm »
Okay, for bags of holding, the SRD says that they act as portals to a "nondimesional space".  Overloading it or stabbing it with something sharp (from inside or outside) ruins it and all contents are "lost forever".  Turning it inside out spits out everything in there, but doesn't harm the contents or the bag (except that the bag stops working until you turn it right side out again).  And putting a portable hole into a bag of holding, or vice versa, tends to destroy both with everything inside (and possibly everything within a 10-foot radius) by tearing open a rift to the Astral Plane.

Man, why do I find all of this shit fascinating?  (There's whole threads on some of the physics-breaking crap you can pull with D&D's Wondrous Items.  Ring Gates in particular can produce some interesting effects.)

Clarifying note: We have seen Rose's dreamself vanish in just this manner when she woke up, so John's dreamself vanishing wasn't something special Vriska did.  She just woke him up.

I have absolutely no idea where his dreamself is going to be when he falls asleep again, however.

There's definitely a few legitimate concerns about genetically engineered crops, but they're mostly based on the new genes "escaping" rather than any directly adverse effects on humans (so the people who don't want to eat stuff because it's genetically modified are silly).

A good example of a real concern would be Roundup Ready corn, which has been modified to be immune to the highly effective pesticide Roundup.  This allows you to just spray it all over the field without worrying about the corn itself, making it much easier to keep the fields weed-free.

Now, imagine what would happen if this gene managed to hop into some of the weed species.  Fun, no?

The rest of the stuff is mostly just variations on that sort of theme.

DF General Discussion / Re: Skeletal aquarium... possible?
« on: August 30, 2010, 10:16:26 pm »
Capture live fish captures vermin fish, I think (like turtles and moghoppers).  To catch and cage larger fish, you'll need to get underwater cage traps somehow (usually by having a "funnel" into a drainable tunnel filled with said traps).

Zombie and skeletal fish can walk on land as far as they want, but they won't be able to get out if you build a wall around the "aquarium", or if they're in a glass aquarium-cage rather than a pit full of water (although the former might be preferable, to stop them from scaring your dwarfs, since glass walls still block line-of-sight).

Like this (side view):

X_____X
X~~~~~X

where X is glass walls and ~ is water (and _ is empty space without water, to prevent escapees).

And now that I think about it, you won't actually need underwater cage traps for undead aquatic wildlife, given that they can walk on land.  Just use bait animals or something (bait dorfs?) to get them into your cage traps.
