Mafia / INVITATION TO THE MAFIA CHAMPIONSHIP (SEASON 11)
« on: March 30, 2024, 05:08:55 pm »
We've been invited to the mafia championships again.

The games will happen sometime between April and June. Participants usually have some input as to what time-zone/date works best for them.

Who wants to go?

I nominate Imp. She has the moxy, the stamina and the loquacity to see us through.

Mafia / NQT's Choose-Your-Own-Spheres - -D3 - GAME OVER - TOWN VICTORY

NQT's Choose Your Own Spheres

This is a BYOR with a Choose-Your-Own-Mafia type role-creation system. How it works is you fill out the following character creation steps:

1. Send a role. Can be anything. A name, a concept, a wikipedia page, an existing mafia role. Whatever you find interesting.
2. Pick a blue sphere from the ability web, then trace a route from sphere to sphere until you have picked three connected blue spheres (with as many red flaw spheres as you dare). You cannot reuse spheres or lines while tracing this journey. See Example Roles for more clarity.

This will set the broad mechanics of your role's abilities. The spheres may appear in separate or combined abilities, once or multiple times. Your role will be built for you with your alignment in mind.

Hedge Lords

For your services to King Alkabar in the conquest of Thornland, you have been granted a castle on the western marches. This rugged, mountainous borderland, known as the Hedge, is riddled with Thornish holdouts, the native Squelsh barbarians, and unusual magic and monsters.

Your county is what you can carve out. Pick a spot for your castle, create your lord, and put your stamp on the Hedge! The game involves raising armies, sending them out and conquering neighbouring areas, growing your county, tile-by-tile, and defending it from encroaching monsters.

This game is can be played competitively or co-operatively, feel free to make whatever arrangements before or during the game with the other Marquesses and Marchionesses as you see fit.

The game will start when we have at least one castle in each of the four eastern sectors.

Mafia / NQT's Mafia Design Thread

NQT's Game Formats

Here's a list of mafia or mafia-adjacent games that I have run based on setups I've designed myself. I've been reflecting on how to do the next CYOM, so I thought I'd recap what I've tried before.

Elements

This was a format for five players where each player had two allies and two enemies (in a circle) and they win when their enemies are dead and they're still alive. A bit swingy maybe but a lot of great possibility for back-stabbing drama.

Elements 1

Two more games of this were run by other people.

Procedurally Generated Mafia

Proc-Gen Mafia uses a random role generator, with some very wacky possibilities. Not always very well balanced but always nice and chaotic. Typically I'd make a batch of roles and then weed out ones which would just instantly end the game (like "Twice per day you can kill every player").

Proc Gen 1 - Mafia Win
Proc Gen 2 - Town Win
Proc Gen 3 - Town Win
Proc Gen 4 - Mafia Win

Angry Ghosts

Angry Ghosts is a game where the dead can keep posting, there are no role-flips and only the dead have night powers (but no vote). I had forgotten about this setup, which was never actually run.

Puzzle Temple Panic

Puzzle Temple Panic was a cross between mafia and a turn based adventure game with objects, puzzles, an action economy and everything. It was very ambitious but also quite  hard to run. To my shame, the actual ending stalled out due to waiting too long on a player for an action and me getting busy with other things, but by that point the scum team had basically won. It was probably a little too difficult, but I loved the blended genre ideas here.

Choose-Your-Own-Mafia

CYOM is my signature game. The core conceit is that players pick their roles themselves (often through a point-buy system) and then they can gain new roles to adapt to the game state as they survive successive days. As a format, it's very much a mixed success. There have been some phenomenal highs and some dreadful lows.

Choose-Your-Own-Mafia - Town Win
Point-Buy system. Probably too town-sided. Some players were very good at making role creation choices, others not so much. There were cult conversion powers on the table, which haven't appeared since.

Choose-Your-Own-Masquerade - Town Win
Same point buy system, but with adjusted costs and more powers. This time it was a Masquerade, so players could only target masks and no one knew (prior to claims or mask inspects) whose mask was whose. It was also Deep South, so there was no night phase, everything happened during the day, which makes things nice and dramatic. People had fun with it but it was also felt to be quite town-sided (though the mafia did have more tools at their disposal that they didn't always take advantage of).

Choose-Your-Own-Mafias - Scum Team B Win
This was like the Masquerade game but instead had two scum teams, as well as NPC masks (so someone could kill a mask but it turns out its not a real player). I upped the character creation point value so players started out twice as powerful. There were also third parties. The game went on to 13 days because one of the scum teams managed to cheese the point system in some inflationary way.

Choose-Your-Own-Mafia 4 - Town Win
This game used a D&D style race + class +levels system which was quite elegant. Scum gave up on D1, this was a complete disaster. Town full claimed and came up with a plan to squeeze out the scum and confirm everyone, and so scum threw in the towel. Miserable. Learned an important lesson about doubly ensuring the game can't be won by full claiming D1.

Mafia / Auto-Mafia - Game Over - Mafia Win!
« on: March 24, 2023, 02:19:25 pm »
Auto-Mafia

This is a multi-day game of mafia that only lasts one game day.

At the end of the one and only day, after the flip all players PM a list of all the other players in order of elimination. Mafia additionally submit an order to the players they'd like to mafiakill; the doctor submits a list of players they want to protect; and the Cop submits a list of suspects they wish to inspect. Then the entirety of the rest of the game is automated based on these preferences and we see which team won.

This setup is based on Alternating 9P, with the cop and doc acting on alternate nights. This means the cop won't live long if they're the only one to claim, so bear that in mind.

CYOGTCG Card Repository

The Choose-Your-Own-Game-Trading-Card-Game has been going for a number of years in different forms. So they don't all get lost to time, here's a full repository of all known cards. This will allow anyone to play games made from pre-made cards. Note that not all these cards are equally balanced, and some were made for specific contexts and have mechanics that don't really make sense outside of that.

I will wait until the current Wars game is over before sharing any cards from that.

This archive is currently believed to be complete. However, if you have any game legal cards that aren't already here, please send them my way and I'll update this list.

Mafia / Proc Gen Mafia 4 - Game Over - Scum Win
« on: August 25, 2022, 02:51:45 pm »
Procedurally Generated Mafia 4

Proc-Gen Mafia is a normal game of mafia except that the role powers are procedurally generated using the source found here.

You could call the setup semi-open in design, as the source code for the generator will be public at the start of the game. The previous game can be read here. Previous version of the game used this generator.

Players will be given roles that look like this:

-Black Inspectist: You can kill all players targeting all players targeting a random player's target's target's target's target. Your kills cannot be protected or be immunised against. Action: superkill.
-One-shot CPRor: Upon dying for the first time, you will revive without flipping. While you are alive, each other player's night action has a 75% chance of affecting a random player
-Mad Frameup: You will take on the role of the first person to die. You have two abilities: up to twice per night you can befriend another player, or each day you can voteblock all players targeting all players targeting a random player's target. Actions: befriend, voteblock. You are a third-party: you win when all other players are dead
-Purple Stalkling: You can learn the actions owned of another player's target. Action: inspect
-Beta Jesrate: If zombie urist is killed, the player responsible will die. Up to twice per day you learn the role PM of the next upcoming role in the setup, but not who has it. Actions: (auto)cheat
-Insane Guardor: A random player of the same alignment can vote twice. You have two abilities: each night you can guard a third of the players, or up to twice per night you can curse a random player. Actions: guard, curse.
-Allilante Invenbor: If you are killed, all the players will give away their role to a random player of a different alignment. Once per day you can receive a list of half the third parties left in the game. Action: Census.
-Police Backnet: You can prime all the players, or ignite all the cursed targets. Actions: Prime/Ignite
- Doubleup Deephealer: You can feed a target's target each night, which will either CPR them or infect them (25/75 chance). Actions: Bake

Mafia / INVITATION TO THE WALRUS CHAMPIONSHIP (SEASON 9)
« on: March 22, 2022, 05:14:26 am »
We have been invited the mafia champ games again. Full invite below. Vote in this thread for as many people as you'd like to nominate, and whoever wants to go and has the most votes will be this year's champ.

INVITATION TO THE MAFIA CHAMPIONSHIP (SEASON 9)

Ahoy there! :)

I’m very excited to invite your community to participate in Season 9 of the Mafia Championship.

The Mafia Championship is an annual forum-based tournament series that pits representatives from various online Mafia (aka Werewolf) communities against one another as they compete to determine the Internet’s greatest forum Mafia player. Each participating community democratically elects one person to represent them and be their “Champion”.

The tournament first started back in 2013. Since then, 320+ different communities and 50+ different nationalities have been represented.

It’s a super fun event that has created many new friendships and close bonds between communities. I hope that you would be interested in taking part :)

1. DO YOU ACCEPT THE INVITATION?

If your community wishes to participate, please confirm your participation to Lissa as soon as you can to ensure yourselves a spot. Currently, the plan is to accommodate 135 communities this season. If there is further interest, additional communities may sign up as substitutes; generally there are some replacements needed both before and during games.

If your community agrees to participate, the deadline for selecting your representative is April 24th, but the sooner the better.

The games will take place on Mafia Universe. If it’s okay, I can link directly to the general discussion thread regarding this topic on Mafia Universe.

Important notes
  • You may decide yourselves how you want to elect your representative, but we highly recommend some sort of democratic process (public nominations followed by a poll usually works out well).
  • In addition to electing a representative, you should also name an alternate who will be asked to step in if the first choice needs to back out.
  • Your representative should be prepared for having to read upwards of 600-700 posts per 24 hours during the early stages of the game. Additionally, there’s a requirement that each player must make at least 10 posts per Game Day. Only active players should apply/participate. I repeat: Your chosen player needs to be able to promise a good amount of activity on a daily basis!
2. SEASON 9 FORMAT

The tournament structure
  • 135 communities will participate, each sending one representative.
  • QUALIFIERS: 9 Qualifier Games will be played, consisting of 15 players each. I.e. every representative plays in one Qualifier Game. The players themselves vote post-game to determine who is deserving of advancement. 1st and 2nd place will advance to the Semifinal Games.
  • SEMIFINALS: A Jury consisting of finalists from Season 8 will select 27 additional players to advance to the three Semifinal Games. From each game, five players will advance to the Finale Game based on a post-game player vote, just like in the qualifying phase.
  • THE FINALE: The Finale Game is played. Once it has completed, the players vote to determine who shall receive the title of Season 9 Champion and a winner’s certificate signed by Dmitry Davidoff, the creator of mafia.
This year’s setup: Mountainous 15er
The setup features 15 roles consisting  of the following:

3x Mafia Goon
12x Vanilla Townie

Relevant mechanics info
- Day start.
- Majority elimination is enabled Day 2+, but majority is not required at any point for the elimination.
- Tied votes will result in a player being eliminated at random from among the tied players.
- No outside communication. I.e. you may not contact the other players outside of the thread (unless you are Mafia and wish to speak with your teammates).
- Phase Lengths and Deadlines will be up to the players themselves (I’ll organize your representative into a game with deadlines that suit their preferences).
- Thread is locked during Night Phases.
- Votes are automatically locked in at LYLO.
- Mafia share a factional Night Kill, which is a single standard shot for their faction. The mafia faction kill is mandatory.
- Mafia may communicate at any time.
- Each individual player may make a maximum of 150 posts per day phase (this restriction is lifted 1 hour before day end).
- The game will have a host to oversee everything and make sure everyone’s following the code of conduct, but otherwise the game is completely automated (automatic votecounts, thread locks and reveals alignments automatically, the bot receives and processes actions, etc.).

3. SEASON 9 TIMELINE

There will be 9 Qualifier Games, and your representative plays in just one of these. They will have start dates ranging from the end of April to mid-June. So in other words, as long as your representative can play sometime during that period, they should be good and I’ll make sure they get scheduled into a game that suits their schedule well. I.e. if your rep is busy until June, that isn’t a problem.

The Semifinal Games will be played in July/August, and the Finale Game sometime in August/September (whenever we can work out something that suits everyone).

If you want to get in contact with me ASAP, you can find me on Discord (Lissa#8083).

Kind regards,
Lissa
