1. Can they be tamed?
2. Can they reproduce?
3. Do dwarven preferences for an animal extend to undead versions of that animal?
4. Do new undead plants spawn on undead biomes?

Is it possible to get animals like unicorns, if dumped into a pit rather than caged, to breed? I know tame animals can breed, but what of wild animals?

I am attempting to generate a world that is, from end to end, terrifying, more so than even the Terrifying biome implies. Is it possible to generate a world absolutely full of zombies and skeletal creatures, without any of these silly non-evil squares breaking everything up and ameliorating local undead levels? Every time I've tried world gen gives me an endless stream of rejects...

In short, how do I make the most hostile world possible?

Related: does stopping world gen at year 2 to produce megabeasts reduce wildlife levels?

I would assume so, but the mother can be dealt with, assuming they can be separated. Perhaps cage traps?

If my fort has some children that I have earmarked for the military, is there anything I can do to make them skill/attribute up now in this useless decade and two years before they are considered adults and can therefore be formally told to spar? Could I, for example, lock them in a flooding chamber and keep them at 4/7 water so they gain Swimmer skill, or is there another, more efficient way to get my future soldiers up to par as fast as possible? I would like to give them an edge before throwing them into pits of goblins...

Related: can dwarven babies be separated from their mothers and live? If so, is there a way to train them?

Could you dig out the bottom layer, put a support in, then mine out the other layers before channeling the edges and then collapse the support? It would entail only channeling the very edges, after which the entire construction is still stable and you can get your miney folk out completely before collapsing the floors into oblivion.

Magma will flow any distance in a channel that does not increase in width from source; the problem is time. Pumps will ameliorate this, if you have access to magma-safe materials or green glass (it melts, but is safe for pumps)

Is there any way to put animals in a pit such that the animals cannot climb out but dwarves can go in and out to collect them for slaughter? I have tried using non-pet-passable doors and they always get left open long enough for the animals to escape.

So I have a cave river and its associated drop in frame rate. If I dam it, flooding the source tiles (they're on the map), will they produce more water later?

That will do it. Islands will also cause you problems. That elven caravans arrive with dead animals after traveling through inhospitable biomes would suggest that the caravans can also probably die en route, which would explain the isolation experienced by some of my glacial forts.

You might be on an island or similarly isolated landmass; in effect, you're completely isolated. I'm afraid that by four years not seeing even an ambush is a fairly positive indicator.

If you want to check to make sure you have lots of green things to hit in future games, tab over to the "neighbors" tab in embark(sorry if you knew that).
