DF Gameplay Questions / Re: DF2012 Video Tutorial
« on: October 24, 2012, 05:41:45 pm »
Really pleased you enjoyed watching them. I wasn't aware of any of what you said about kobolds; I haven't played much of DF2012, it'll probably become more apparent as I go along that I'm learning or relearning a few aspects. Knowing what you've said, I can absolutely see getting rid of kobolds as a reasonable idea.

Well structured feedback, thanks.

I'll add an annotation about saving, completely missed it without thinking. The idea for an easier world is a good one too, so I'll either add to the video or just put it in the description. The default world still won't have those settings, but you should be able to get through the tutorial before any but the kobolds become an issue. Not sure what I'll do about them.

Fortress design wasn't planned at all, I was just packing things in. I'd complain if I saw it too. I'll try to fix the sound issue, thanks for watching so much.

The rest isn't going to be a let's play, the first video was to establish the core parts of having a fortress. Everything else will be compartmentalised as 'setting up a hospital' 'how do I military' 'Irrigation' and so on.

DF Gameplay Questions / DF2012 Video Tutorial

So having been frustrated with the lack of any up to date and concise video tutorials for dwarf fortress I've finally gotten around to making one. I'm trying to keep the videos fast so people can learn fast from them.
I've currently only got 2 videos up. One on getting for fortress established and the other a brief explanation of weorldgen and customising your embark.

Feedback would be great, I've already ended up teaching any of my friends who are interested in playing so I've ran out of people to test it on.

I thought he meant that it broke occasionally, and wouldn't work for awhile afterwards. I like your way better, though.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Do we have ladders yet or not?
« on: April 06, 2010, 10:31:01 pm »
Kind of related to this, I tried to build an upwards stairway (My mason fell off of a bridge into a cave, along with all my picks, and my best miner (who died because of this fail)) into nothing, it worked, I tried to build a downward stairway (I also tried up/down) above it, and... No. Distance to materials was all at around -41000, and it was suspended as soon as I started it. Suggestions for making this work? :/

Kind of wrong forum, but uh... The only problem I see is that that's a lot of stuff for elves to be carrying, and they probably wont even attack you for it, which is... kind of suck. It needs to be taken more seriously.

In the new version at least, the shells are created when you prepare the lobster, not when you eat them. Same for turtles. It makes sense, but it's bad for embarking with shelled creatures, incase of mood.

Your English makes me want to tear my eyes out. You need to use > and < to move between layers, by default.

I'm pretty 100% certain Toady explained all the new genetic stuff in a talk recently, so you probably -could- breed size.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Soap, anyone? Or Powder for casts?
« on: April 06, 2010, 09:45:12 am »
Apparantly the problem with soap is that it's a glob and needs to be a bar. There's a thread in this forum somewhere with fixes, but the poster was unsure if doctors would -use- the soap. As for gypsum "powder" being stuck in the kiln... I have the exact same problem and the only advice I've gotten is "have you got enough bags?" so... No idea, at all.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: DF2010 stay inside order equivelent

I believe it was mentioned in another thread that the option no longer exists. You could set up an alert level in which all civs hide inside the burrow though, and just change alert level during ambushes.

DF Suggestions / Re: My wishlist

The immigration office... While it may make some things too easy, want so much it hurts. Even now that migrants don't suck, I just want to take it slow, which isn't helped by 20+ migrants in a wave. Talking purely from an in universe perspective, random people can't just move in without asking, surely?

The materials thing is at least planned, I believe.

Pastures would really encourage me to use animals more, since having them wandering around bothers me.

I don't see any reason why not, for any of these ideas, really.

Hangedman- You're probably screwed, find some aboveground seeds and get to it.
Ziven- Default is > I believe.
Nick- Supposedly the corpse needs to be near the butcher's shop to work (at least in 40d) so try having it stockpiled right next to it.
C0nscript- That is indeed your problem, going by what I've heard from other people.

I'd still like a hand with my "plaster? Hospitals don't need plaster, silly human" all of my dwarves are giving me.
