DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Fire imps, more orcs
« on: October 24, 2009, 03:09:08 pm »
The booze isn't what's dissapearing (well I suppose it is since that guy is now "cleaning" it away) it's the barrels it's stored in.

I'm cool with imps and stuff, but I'm not really worried about imp bone mugs or whatever, so I'm just staying away for the moment. Magma I'm more careful with, so far I've only used it for forging (Though I managed to dig a magma channel straight into my main hallway and only entrance once, so maybe that's not very safe either). I've been tempted to start obsidian farming, but apart from that I've just not needed to use it.

They're talking about goblin mayors and queen consort/mayor in the civ list, not in their actual fort, which I guess is where you're lost.

I think I'll just build it well out of the way and watch what happens, yeah.

This is unrelated, but I just noticed my carpenter "cleaning" he was cleaning beer from the corner of my food stockpile, since apparantly my barrels have started evaporating. Do I have really scary vermin, or what?

My fps is around 80-100, I can't stand having it low. I do have time to look at stuff generally, but I'm usually watching something else when it happens. Not sure if it's the two messages arriving together, or I'm just missing the first message (wouldn't shock me).

If I butcher the corpse, deconstruct the shop, stand back for awhile, will the fire have damaged the meat/skin at all? If not, I may well try that.

My problem is that I don't see them until I get "importantdwarf cancels important job: fire imp" "importantdwarf has died in the heat" at the same time, unfortunately. Once I know they're there it's easy, I've had untrained dwarves wrestle them with minimal injuries. I've not risked butchering them yet, too scared of the fire hazard. One imp set fire to a bit of grass or something (No idea why, aiming for a rabbit maybe) before the reclaim, had a ring of fire spreading outwards til it ran out of stuff to burn. Luckily only one death, a bowyer immigrant who wasn't going to get much work anyway.

I haven't personally done it, and if you editted them off it might just treat them like they don't need heads. However, I do recall someone who edited dwarves to have no hands (trying to reclaim an artifact) and didn't have to regen.

Mass reclaiming on every z level is tedious, I just thought there might be an easier way. I've gone through and picked out the things I want, since posting, though. As for magma... I did dig out more than necessary, but I covered them all with floor. I've just gone and checked with k for open space... The top part of each smelter, the sides of each forge. There're also two others that I was too lazy to floor over, but I walled them in since I didn't want the area open anyway. All in, I'm fairly sure it's covered :( Perhaps the imps have been coming in the front door and running into the ore storage area, but I doubt it :/

Your dwarves will prefer wells to rivers, but until you get a well they'll completely disregard your orders and drink what they prefer. booze > well > river > muddy pool with water zone > muddy pool. As for removing carp, magma would work, but I'm not sure if it'd restock eventually (assuming you unblock it after) marksdwarves might manage it, but I've had them stand too close to the edge and get dragged in, before.

DF Gameplay Questions / Fire imps, more orcs
« on: October 24, 2009, 12:37:34 pm »
More fail!

First, I've got a few forges and smelters using magma, there's no exposed magma (floors or impassable workshop tiles). Despite that, fire imps manage to get into my forge, murder my dwarves while I'm not paying attention, then escape back into the vent. The wiki said covering them how I had would work. So, what else can I do? Would putting grates (not magma proof, lacking bauxite) under the workshop work?

Second, I lost the fortress and reclaimed. The orcs are still here (I didn't realise they can open forbidden doors >.<) and aren't aggressive. I was under the impression that I would have to clear them out, not just leave them there. I expect they'll attack me when I'm next seiged, but I'd like confirmation. If I can expect them to turn on me, is there any way to lure them somewhere and drop them in a pit?

Last (hopefully quick) question. Can I claim everything on the map at once, without the stocks screen? I can't use the stocks screen because it gives me a guess, rather than exact. I don't want to have to mass reclaim on each z level, either.

Except the king is a king, and the mayor is a QUEENs consort. The king is a Queen, or the Queen has a consort other than the king.

Do you have a dwarf meat on your kitchen menu thing?

At a guess I'd say something messed with the raws. Which is irrelevant, because you should order a butcher to butcher himself and see what happens.

I knew they'd be harder, and I do find goblins fairly weak (thought I've only faced them on a couple of fortresses, I usually get bored or think "ooh that'd be fun" and restart, after a few years) I just knew I couldn't equip and train my starting 7 as well as keep all my essential work going, so I decided to just hope I'd get immigrants before I got orcs.

The orc seige turned up while I was still on 7 dwarves, no military, no traps. That's why I decided to lock the doors and dig a moat to drop them in. I'll get something better prepared for next time, though probably not cage traps, it always feels a bit cheap for me.

Orcs have trap avoid, you'll need some other way to deal with them than simple traps.

I was going to go with something completely insane... a regular military. I was just waiting for the immigrants to turn up to start it, and in spring of my second year (When I was expecting immigrants...) I got an orc seige, so that failed a bit.
