DF General Discussion / Re: How to make curses square again?
« on: May 17, 2010, 08:52:18 pm »
In fact, I tested that out: my copy of DF does in fact scale down to 80 pixels wide by 25 pixels tall.
Yeah, 31.03 doesn't have the new graphical features so grid size and resolution are two different options. I'm so used to 40d# that I forgot they used to be separate. (I've held off on 31.03 cause of the bugs)

That's something I've been wondering for a while... how can I make the default ASCII square and not look horrible? I'm having issues picking between symmetry OCD and the ugly squish look it gives me when I make it squarish and not rectangular. Not a fan of tilesets, either.
How about this?

Curses is a tileset too, just not an enhanced one.

80x20 pixels is awfully small...
(Hint: [WINDOWEDX/Y] is not the [GRID_SIZE])

This is the size and font for windowed mode.  Changing to the 800x600 font might make you happier.
If set below 256x256 it specifies the grid size instead, with a minimum of 80x25.

Hm? :-\

You can use hotkeys.
http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/40d:Hotkeys
Oh I do, and handy they are - but it's still less convenient to navigate in the Z plane.

More importantly, they don't help in the slighest with digging a decent sized staircase down ~145 levels, which is how far I had to go to the magma in my current fort ;)
1. d-i to designate up-down stairs
2. enter-right-down-enter->
3. enter-left-up-enter->
4. Go to #2 and repeat desired number of times

It's not that difficult to make a decent depth 2x2 staircase.

5
But 100 pumps would only be enough to bring magma 49 z-levels up...
Not with a pump stack.

6
that's one heck of a commute :O do dwarves move any slower when using the stairs?
One z-level straight down is the same as moving one tile on the same plane.

I had a legendary axedwarf with an adamantine battle axe go berserk (why are there no shells in 0.31?). It wasn't pretty. He crippled, killed or wounded half my military before they managed to land a killing blow.

The problem with shells is that you get them by processing raw turtles, not eating cooked ones.

It's almost impossible to catch turtles.

1+1 =
Impossible to catch turtles? More like impossible to catch anything else. It seems all my lakes and rivers are empty except for the odd turtle.

but you can't make them change their gear based on alert level :/
Seriously? That sucks. :(

Make one alert level for training and one for actual combat?

Oh yeah, I understand. i would never expect a solid date anyway. Just was wondering if its a good month or more off. Less would be great but to say that would mean, like you said, already being essentially done.
Keep an eye on the devlog for clues on how close the release is.

I'm personally playing 40d instead, until the merge and bugfixes.

DF Gameplay Questions / A couple of questions.
« on: May 06, 2010, 06:14:16 pm »
1. How do you make a vertical shaft? I was digging an exhaust for my magma lines to power my forge, but I was kind of haphazardly digging a shaft down and my dwarves kept getting stuck. Is there an optimal way to make a shaft straight up/down?

2. Is there a way to tell a workshop what materials to use? For example if I want my mechanics shop to only use fire safe stones, or if I want to make furniture out of a certain type of rock.

If anyone can answer these questions that would be helpful, thanks.

Turn off "automatic web collection", they may have been collecting webs to bring to the loom.

DF General Discussion / Re: What's your favorite tileset?

I'm a vanilla fan myself, if only because the way some of the Text in menus gets replaced in some tile sets bothers the heck out of me.
Use something that changes accented characters to normal characters then. I use this one, and I love it.

Just needed to update my Video Driver. I'm not very tech-savvy, so I'll describe the process for those who need it.

-Go to your Control Panel
-Click "System and Security"
-Click "Device Manager", it should be next to "System"
-Look at "Display adapters". Click the arrow (or plus) to view the contents.
-Right click the only file in there, hit "Update Driver Software"

Woosh!
Not a great idea to do it like that. Better to go to the site of your graphics card manufacturer and download the latest driver from there.
