DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Quick question about rivers

just remember, to access the brook with buildings (ie waterwheels), you'll need to channel through the brook surface.

A variation on this gave me an evil idea for dealing with goblins (little to no practical utility, but lots of giggles if it works).

Gobbo 1: Why is there this bridge across the brook?! You can walk over brooks!
Gobbo 2: Hey, look! A cat over on the other side of the bridge!
(Bridge retracts out from under the goblins, revealing a channelled-out area)
Gobbo 1: ...I hate my life.

Gobbo 1 has drowned.
Gobbo 2 has drowned.

Haaa. The hubby is a Urist McChampion with nine orcs, three beak dogs and forty zombies under his belt to his name, so he could probably take most things in his stride.

But yeah, luckily it was a fey mood.
Urist McHubby: "What's gotten into you? You're suddenly going at it like a woman possessed!"
Urist McBride: "Reeeaaaarghblurgleblurgleblurgle I NEED RAW GLASS"

"THERE IS NO URIST MCBRIDE, ONLY ZUUL!"
OK, I'm sorry, I had to say it.

I dunno. Beard contact might be all that is necessary.

I declare this cannon!

...Has anyone actually modded in gunpowder?

Hollow pyramids are cool as well, especially if you have something extra-dwarfy inside

How does a huge clear glass pyramid with a sculpted skull inside sound? (This is my Massive Time-Consuming Future Megaproject Plan).

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Goblins not attacking
« on: November 12, 2009, 02:33:08 am »
They certainly seem to path straight into my cage traps.  I've had multiple ambushes path into them within minutes of each other.

Yeah, Goblins are slow learners like that. Whether they remember the next lesson (the one that rhymes with "frowning chamber") or not, depends on your personal philosophical beliefs.

156
I think this is what they call a noob trap.  You fall for it once, then you dig around in the wiki for a while to figure out what's going on, then you seldom fall for it again except when you make a stupid mistake.  It adds a little to the atmosphere but I don't think it adds much to gameplay unless you focus solely on making wood crafts.  There should at least be some warning that they don't like buying wood.

The first time, it's a noob trap. After this, it becomes an elf trap.

Whoa. Cool. To bad the elves are almost extinct. They trade good exotic creatures (pretty much their only use...)

Ballista target practice : )

You've forgotten the value of masterwork elf skull totems.

...I describe taking breaks in terms of Count Dorku Cancels Study: Eating/Sleeping/Reading Forum/Playing Dwarf Fortress.

...I construct my Warhammer models to menace with spikes of plastic.

...My initial reaction to any offers of a trade is to muse on how much easier it would be to simply drown the person in question.

...I know that if we dig too deep, we'll unleash violently psychotic fire clowns.

...I build miniature megaconstructions in LEGO to see what each level should look like.

Doesn't your uncle being your daddy count as trauma, Count Dorku?

I will concede that point.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How do you arm your Military?
« on: November 11, 2009, 09:50:10 pm »
My military comes in three flavours.
1) Royal Guard/Fortress Guard who stumble into the wrong place; equipped with crossbow, leather armour and buckler. Either male or female, usually female.
2) Dedicated marksdwarves; equipped with crossbow, leather armour and buckler. Either male or female, usually female.
3) Dedicated melee; plate, shields, and at least one squad of three equipped with each weapon plus wrestlers. Almost invariably male. Whenever a member of a squad reaches Lord training (you know, Elite Wrestler, Swordmaster etc) I promote him to being in charge of his own squad and conscript a couple of dwarves with redundant skills to join in.

Dwarf Fortress:
Ignoring Occam's Razor since 1050.
Dwarves would only be interested in Occam's Razor if there was a way to use it as a trap component.
And probably not even then. One should not multiply entities needlessly, after all, be they unknown terms or bits of gobbo.

But multiplying the number of dismembered goblin components is needed.

Mandates: UUUUUNNNNNNNNNHGHHHH DUU HURF DURF

Demands: ME WANT SHINY THING.

Tax Collector: I want an adamantine armor stand.
Metalsmith: Uhh, sir... we're in the middle of the plains. The nearest mountain is a three month walk.
Tax Collector: ADAMANTINE!

No, that's normal nobles, not brain-damaged ones. (The problem with most nobles is caused by inbreeding, not trauma. Search your feelings, you know it to be true.)

On a side note, does blood show up better on smoothed or rough walls?
Microcline and marble specifically.

Blood Interactions with Specific Walls:
Rough walls: You get a big red square.
Smooth walls: You get little red lines.
Engraved walls: You get a little red picture.

The winner? Engraved walls. They look coolest.

Gold and Steel masterwork statues are worth a whopping 9000.
If you want OVER 9000, the best value statue would be Platinum (IIRC, 12000) before you-know-what.

Unfortunately, try as they might dwarven furnace operators have yet to successfully extract platinum from a bag of sand.

I, for one, am rather fond of rope reed cloth.

Yeah, but killing elves gets you rope reed cloth and elf bone bolts and elf skull totems and any other crap they were carrying.
