By the way, guys, there's a small stone house directly west of the Fort, across the small lake. The place is not abandoned and I happen to reside there, so please don't tear it down!

You guys have pretty much decided to settle in the most fun place imaginable. I've actually visited you guys' fort and pestered some of your people. They didn't like me and when shiverstide's snow fell I froze to death because I was wearing metal armor with no fur over-clothes, some guy even just watched me die while going about his business.

It irritates me that all the byond games are win only.

Any help with getting this going in linux?

Shouldn't this BYOND build work? There's also an entire BYOND guild dedicated to Linux compatibility via Wine, you can find these ol chaps here.

On the subject of Hazordhu, I actually played this back in the day. Not only that, I was actually apart of the server moderation team. I also helped coin together some small systems in the programming back then, but they're really too small to be considered relevant. Who knows, I might come back and assist in you guys' Fort!

I have this problem too. Something about the mystery and excitement of a fortresses first year is amazing, a feeling that is tough to achieve later on (for me). I was in your position and essentially stopped playing DF for about a year.

When I came back it was fun for a while but then I had the same problem of, 'Why do I care about this fortress? isn't it just a bunch of useless designation and predictable outcomes?'

I started to ask myself why I played DF. Not to win, but to have awesome stories to tell my friends or you folks on the forums. To do things utterly dwarvenly.

So I changed up a few things regarding my playstyle. I stopped being OCD. This was a big one, not giving a trogolydytes ass about what your fort looks like or how it functions. Actually, it's not that I don't care, it's that I don't care about the efficiency of the fortress. I'm building my metalworks here because the dwarves want to build it here, not because it saves FPS and is closer to my fortress.

Start reading your dwarves likes/dislikes, then make stories out of that. I used to be too impatient to read up on that stuff, but I find the more time you invest in a dwarf the more *fun* it is when he dies.

Stop thinking like a fascist and think like an artist. Play the game with buckets and buckets of imagination.

As an example, I recently started a snowy fortress on a werewolf ridden mountainside. One of my plant gatherers was out herbalizing (through 3 feet of snow >.>) when a werewolf jumped him. I visualized this as the most epic shit ever, with snowflakes moving around the werewolf as he silently charged through the snowy forest, bearing down on my hapless dwarf.

Take risks. Don't be afraid to lose a fortress. There's many more where that came from, and think about how fun it will be to make a new one !

Don't be picky. If something goes wrong live with it. Stick with fortresses until they've hit a wall or succumbed to death. If nothing interesting is happening, make something happen or pick a better spot.

I've never had the patience for megaprojects, but some people find them rewarding.

Thanks for reading that, essentially mind diarrhea right there.

You have absolutely no idea how inspiring this is! I've always thought of personalizing the dwarves as unpractical and unnecessary, like giving them their own names to distinguish them on a personal level. I think I'll try this!

I once had a successful fort go up to 3 years in a 3-week timespan and I was happy with it. But I got bored of it eventually because there were no sieges or ambushes at all, so I abandoned it and tried a new location. Now most of my time spent playing DF is getting midway through Year 1 then abandoning the fortress because I get bored of it.

The main problem I'm having is my inability to stick with a fort long enough for it to actually establish into something. Because of this I've never breached the 2010 HFS (nor do I know what it is!) and I've never had a siege, or established a dwarven economy or anything like that. I'm open to suggestions as to how to make building my fort from the ground more interesting!

DF General Discussion / Re: Humans = Rabbits

The humans in your world will undoubtedly launch a genocide against all nonhuman sentient races, and WIN. They will become the last remaining intelligent race that habits the aboveground and underground, and with this conquest they shall expand their influence throughout the entire world and become the dominant force. Over time they shall develop highly sophisticated technologies and void the world of everything mythological.

What you have there is the beginning of what has happened to Earth.

You can find shopkeepers in human towns if that's what you're asking. Though sometimes it's hard to barter with shops and not get completely ripped off, or simply not satisfy the shopkeeper's demands for +cave spider silk mitten+.

Until you can beat a child with its own limbs to death in front of its incapacitated parents while they watch helplessly from a distance in Minecraft it's nowhere close to the magnitude of "awesomeness" Dwarf Fortress has to offer. Like mentioned previously, just because there are a lot more people playing Minecraft (thus a major factor to the amount of money Notch makes vs. the amount of money Toady makes) than Dwarf Fortress doesn't exactly make it better, really! While they're both pretty great games, the average person will look at Dwarf Fortress and say "AARGH someone has threw up predigested alphabet soup all over my monitor!"

Then the person would look at Minecraft and say "Hey the graphics aren't that great, but at least there is a three-dimensional representation of the entities in my character's surroundings! Rejoice!" It should also be glaringly obvious that the elite few people in a group would prefer DF over Minecraft simply because it has more to do in it, and it has way more content. Arguably these people are considerably more mentally mature than the others who don't give DF a chance.

tl;dr: You know those geeks that you're bound to find in a group of people (~1 in 20 people)? We are those geeks. Minecraft forum-goers are typically the other 19 people. We all get along usually just fine with minimal flame wars and trolling because we are all very alike.

I remember asking a personal question about my body a long time ago on these forums, and I was accosted with the response "pour magma on it". There are indeed trolls on these forums, but their form of trolling can best be described as...

Dwarvenly.  8)
