DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Do some Dorfs just love being homeless?
« on: December 26, 2009, 02:56:27 pm »
An amusing theory, thwarted by the fact that there's no philosopher in this fortress.  I think they're actually just a pack of skinflints who refuse to spend a penny more than they have to.  And if that means sleeping on a rough shale block floor, so be it.

Either way, none of the rest of my Dorfs have any problem renting the zero-rent rooms.  Yet this certain handful insists on sleeping on the cold stone (or sometimes green glass) floor instead of renting a damned room.  What gives?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Do some Dorfs just love being homeless?
« on: December 26, 2009, 02:21:28 pm »
This is just getting ridiculous.  I have 195 free bedrooms for "rent" in my fort (and rent is turned off, so it's not like they can't afford them).  I even have 24 non-designated beds for just in case.  Yet somehow about 20 of my Dorfs still have no room to call their own and are sleeping wherever they happen to be when they get drowsy.  It's not that they lack funds; one of them has over 2000 dorfbux, and he's currently sleeping on top of a lever he was pulling casino-style to get more money.  What is WRONG with these little idiots?

I think that says it all, really.  And hopefully I got the right bracket; been ages since I played in ASCII.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Does dwarf companion change gender?
« on: December 26, 2009, 12:52:51 am »
So basically, Dwarf Companion can act as the equivalent of the TF gun from El Goonish Shive?  That's kinda cool.  I shall mess with the heads of one of my Dwarves by swapping his/her gender now and see how his friends react as well.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Let it burn!

I thought for sure this was going to be a Dwarven carol.

Oh the biome outside is Frightening,
But inside it is enlightening,
As the engineers test the magma trap,
Let it burn!
Let it burn!
Let it burn!

The lava trap is flowing nicely,
And the Goblin siege is dicey,
But the Dwarves know how to end it fast,
Let it burn!
Let it burn!
Let it burn!

When the Elves finally come to trade,
They'll be met with firey delight,
As the Dwarves pour out liquid hate,
And prove their nation's might!

The lava is slowly hard'ning,
And the !!Elf Corpses!! make delightful gard'ning,
What a delightful hellhole we own,
Let it burn!
Let it burn!
Let it burn!

I find the best sites are the ones that span multiple biomes as well as having lots of features.  A lot of times, any single biome will only have two layer classes, and rarely sport much in the way of minerals.  But the cross-biome sites almost always sport a plethora of different minerals.

Of course, when all else fails, look for a desert with a magma pipe.  Unlikely though a find like that is, pretty much every white or black sand desert consists of chalk below the sand (meaning lots of magnetite and platinum to go with your huge layers of flux).

I have a very specific design I use.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

To sum it up: my forts fit into a very clean 35x35 cube of space and span about 10 Z-levels.  Makes for short hauling jobs and huge amounts of stockpile space.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Ecstatic Spartan Dwarves...

I think the mechanics must have changed at some point.  Either that, or every single time a military Dwarf does anything military-related (including every single sparring action) results in a new happy thought.  My off-duty military Dwarves often have their happiness listed at about 2500 at any given time.

Also, the default happiness seems to be 100.  The founders start at that (though it quickly gets shifted within the first half-step of gameplay), and all migrants arrive at 100 happiness.

I'm pretty sure Toady had enough sense to code in limiters.  I know he did for unhappiness: no Dwarf can ever go below 0 happiness, it just pegs it back at 0.  Though they seem to have a hidden "reserve happiness/unhappiness" score too: I had a Dwarf once whose beloved masterpiece bucket got melted, and he stayed at 0 happiness for quite a while afterwards even as he got lots of happiness boosts from his legendary dining arrangements, fine bedroom, and excellent meals.

Also, I noticed that there's mechanics in place to prevent any Dwarf from getting too happy: any Dwarf above 100 happiness gets their happiness decreased at season shifts.  By how much depends on how happy they are, of course.  A Dwarf with 2000 happiness will lose a heck of a lot more at the season shift than one who's at 125.  You'd have to provide a LOT of creature comforts and constant mood-boosters to keep a Dwarf perpetually gaining in happiness as a result.

I hate to resurrect a dead thread, but I had a question: why exactly does yuhhaur's world not gen properly?  Did he have mods of some sort enabled?  Every time I try to gen it from those parameters in any version of DF, I get a totally different world with no site even remotely like the one shown here.

About the closest I could get to what I was looking for was "Yellowstranger the Sly Spry Meeting of Crypts".  I doubt many will recognize what I was after (shy gypsy slyly spryly tryst by my crypt), let alone recognize where it's from or why it's notorious.

That's from The 7th Guest, right?  The sentence with no vowels in?

Wow, someone recognized it.  Yep, that's the one.  It's also the puzzle that coined the term "Soup Cans" to describe any mandatory puzzle that's there solely for the sake of having a puzzle.

I never have crazy stuff like this happen in my dwarf fortresses.

What game are you guys playing?

Oh, it's the same game.  The randomizer has a huge impact on what happens in your game.  Get just the right random numbers rolled up, and you'll witness a once-in-a-lifetime epic (and often tragic) event like this come together.  The most amazing tales are when the randomizer just keeps rolling a chain of events for your fort that usually leads to the whole place dying in a swath of fire and !!Kitten Corpses!!.

Rock Dragons.  You thought the dragons before could get nasty?  Wait 'til you see one that breathes Orthoclase at you.  Whatever you do, do not ever let a Lignite-breathing Rock Dragon cross a fire-breathing regular Dragon...

I'm pretty sure distance is a factor, too: the further you are from the nearest Goblin tower, the longer it will take on average for the Goblins to siege you.
