DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: December 09, 2009, 06:02:44 am »
Wow. So here come the humies, and an ambush pops up. Not a problem; the caravan guards take them out.

Another shows up as the wagons are on their way across the map(I apparently missed yet another spot that kept them from being channeled directly into the depot. -_-) Again, not a problem.

Wagons get all the way to the tunnel within which my depot lies, and a third ambush suddenly appears. Apparently, despite the traps and the presence of my elite corps of marksdwarfs, this is enough to make the merchants say "Screw you guys, we're goin' home." Gaah.

well, there's always locking them in their rooms...
Ah, yes, that. I keep forgetting about the simple things...

I'm trying to figure out a simple way for a newbie to kill an annoying noble. So far I've tried a spike trap, which hasn't worked, and now I'm trying to figure out how to get said noble to stand beneath my atom smasher. (I was going to try building a lever right where the smasher would smash and just task the noble to repeatedly pull that so they'd stay there, but no go.)

On another note, if I build a floor over my aboveground barracks, will that negate the cave adaptation canceling effects it has, or will it be just fine?

No, your military will be practicing in a "inside light aboveground" environment.  Cave adaption will be fended off because of the "light aboveground" part.  Once a tile has been revealed to the sun, it can never be subterranean again.  Something about that dratted sun.

You can do the same with your refuse stockpile so dwarves don't have to venture into danger to throw away a XXPig Tail SockXX.
Ah good. I knew about the not changing back to subterranean, but just wasn't sure if "Inside light aboveground" would keep them, somehow, from not cave adapting. Since it doesn't, I shall give them a roof. Thank you.

When marksdwarfs enter melee with their crossbows, they utilize hammer skill, correct?

So would it be worthwhile to have them crosstrain in hammer skill as well as crossbow skill, or would the extra effort not be worthwhile?
Yeah, they use the hammerdwarf skill.  Whether its worth training depends mostly on how likely it is your marksdwarves will get involved in melee combat, but if they do its very handy.

Okay, thank you.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Your best artifact ever

So, among other artifacts, I've got Stukos TwistedConstructs, a flint sceptor. Really, not that interesting--it's got dwarfs surrounding dwarfs on it, your usual menaces with spikes stuff...really, the whole thing wouldn't be worth mentioning at all, until I noticed this interesting factoid about it which I didn't notice when it was created, in this engraving:

Yep. He actually named it after himself. What an egotist.

I don't want to see anyone but Toady working on this game. I searched for a long time for a good, quality gameplay-based game that would hold my interest for a long time, and I've finally found one.

Now, mind, I did have to use Mike Mayday's graphic pack to play it. I couldn't quite stand pure ascii--I'm just too visual. Once I had that, I was fine. I needed no more graphics than that, and I think the same would be true for a lot of people out there who might not know about this game yet. (Certainly games like the Avernum series prove that.)

So since I don't want anyone else to mess with the game and potentially mess it up for everyone, I think I'm just fine with just Toady developing.

Goblin siege!

These guys didn't stick around a corner of the map. Oh no, they headed straight for my fortress, all 48 of them, including several axe lords, a mace lord, and a couple elite bowmen.

My military is outnumbered two to one, as I'm still working on building them up. I was expecting half of them to get slaughtered and to fill my mausoleum with dwarf bodies.

Instead? Well...just see for yourself:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The goblins were all exterminated, and as far as I can tell, the worst my military ended up with was a broken leg on the Captain of the Guard.

I'm so proud of my dwarfs right now.

Speaking of seiges, I just got my first one for this fort--and incidentally, my first one ever.

So far I am disappointed, as all the goblins are just staying at the edge of the map:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I've got my military mobilized and ready at the two entrances to my fort, but since they're just sitting there, I'm not bothering to order anyone inside until they start moving. (Why they're just sitting there I can't figure out. Might be due to that frozen brook...I'm going ahead and building a bridge further upstream just in case, so they have a way to path to my fortress if for whatever reason they can't cross the brook.)

Oh, and the channels on the edge of the map are my attempts at funneling caravans into my trade depot. So far, hasn't quite worked yet.

EDIT: D'oh, I know why they're sitting there; there's some random Dwarf down in the channel at the brook level and they're trying to get at him.  ::)

Alright. So, basically, no need to designate the excess beds. Rightio. I'll go ahead and undesignate them, then.

DF Gameplay Questions / Forcing Military to Use Specific Barracks
« on: December 06, 2009, 08:34:57 pm »
So, I have multiple barrackses, mainly to handle immigrant waves. Silly me suddenly realized all his military were getting cave adaptation from sparring in the underground barrackses, so I'm building a new one above ground.

Question is, how do I force them to use it rather than the two below? Or is there no way other than to undo the other two barrackes?

So...
Can someone upload the save so I can work on it? =/

EDIT:
Ah, I see BKWM skipped his turn -.-
Great, getting started way too late >.<

EDIT2: I'm uploading the map to DFMA.
Map as of 201

EDIT3:
Guys, the food mismanagement is absolutely horrifying!
Why haven't anyone taken care of the basics??
In my defense, I was trying, but the only farming area available was full of naked mole dogs. That's why I kept talking about farmers getting offed by them. (And it was the main reason I just passed the turn on sooner rather than later, so someone a bit more capable could do it instead.)

I've only played a couple fortresses, so I usually have some soil inside where I can farm from the get go. Not having it was really difficult.

First ambush of the fort, and yet they kill two of my champions. Probably because the goblins had several crossbows while mine were all swordsdwarfs still armed with their silver training swords. (Still irksome, though. Also I felt bad when I saw the dead dwarfs. :( )

I'm preparing to wage war on the Elves, as I'm more than a little sick of their constant cloth bringing and general elviness. Trying to figure out how to redirect the brook--which is way on the opposite side of the map--to my trade depot area to turn it into a flooding chamber. (Or just wait for the merchants to go insane. Either way works.)

EDIT: Looks like I didn't have to wait long for that bout of insanity. All the elves are dead.
