DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Favorite rock (layer)?
« on: February 02, 2010, 07:12:13 pm »
Cinnabar is my favorite.  When I strike useful ore and cinnabar at the same time, I mine the cinnabar first!  Red buildings for everyone!  Not to mention it's poisonous; also an ore of mercury - I wish in DF you could smelt cinnabar to make buckets full of mercury, and that it would be a fluid so you could make pools of mercury...

That will be possible in the next release.
Are you certain? I know there will be more liquids than water and magma available, but mercury?

In my 10 year fortress, I've experienced only a handful of deaths to various things, from idiot dwarves walling themselves off to collapsing an entire floor with them still standing on it, and now getting incinerated by a Dragon. Here's the strange thing, though. All the dwarves that have died so far have all been dwarves who didn't have any relationships in the fortress past "Passing Acquaintance".  The Dragon blew right past mothers, children, babies, and fathers, burned down a few workshops, only to kill the red shirts of the fortress.

Has anyone else experienced this anomaly?

Yes I have, but strangely only in the fort I christened "Enterprise."

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Nobles with strange preferences?

I heard there was a barony where the baroness collected whips and the baron had a preference for leather.

If they were my fort, they'd be long gone from now
Why? I see lots of people reacting this way and I don't get why it's so creepy.

Is it bad that when I saw the thread title I thought it meant the King was an actual baby?

I hope at some point we get to dictate something specific to the engravers so we can do things like that on purpose.

Does this Sparkgear meet your standards, Architect?

Does anyone else feel a little bit hesitant to play Dwarf Fortress much for fear that they'll get bored of it before the update arrives?
Not exactly, but I am holding off starting on a new fortress until the new version comes out, so that I can just go ahead with it rather than getting annoyed at having to wait till I'm bored with my current one to play the new version.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?

Thank God DF doesn't come with the tileset Loyal is using!
I think it's just the Mayday set. What's wrong with it?

Eeep! Pitcheblende? That's uranite! Very bad thing to keep around food; irradiating it like that will only make it poisonous for everyone.

Or it would if Dwarf Fortress tracked that, which I'm sure it will at some point but it doesn't yet.

Other than that, pretty interesting updaate.

All the new features that have been added are listed here by some player, can't remember their name at the moment unfortunately. Last item under Organization is Liaisons will be be generated from scratch if they die.

EDIT: Can't seem to find the thread I found the link in either, so the list may not have been updated recently.
Awesome sauce!

Especially stuff like this:
"Kill orders are now possible. You can select any creature your fort does not control to be killed"

Yeeeeeeeesssssss...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Face Palm moments you had
« on: January 05, 2010, 06:14:16 pm »
I've got one.

I was carving out a small 'forward base' of sorts down near an underground river, so that when I opened it up my soldiers patrolling the area wouldn't have to walk hundreds of tiles every time they got hungry or thirsty (or switched shifts). I was carving out a passage for a well, and just after I dug out the tile to let the water INTO the passage, I noticed that the miner in question had been trapped by the water and was running down to the end of the passage (as opposed to walking up the stairs I had put there for just that purpose).

I think, annoying, but no big problem, I'll just have him dig his way out, then seal it up. And... well.

Is said dwarf easily discouraged? If so, it makes sense. "Bah, screw trying to dig stairs while under many gallons of rushing water. I'll just succumb to mah fate."

DF Gameplay Questions / Goblin Caravans: What Do They Usually Contain?
« on: January 05, 2010, 12:52:43 am »
Yes, I realize they're a rarity, given that you practically have to mod away the snatcher tag on them to get them to be at peace, but I do know it's possible for there to be a goblin caravan. My question is, what's in it?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Curse You Dolomite!
« on: January 02, 2010, 07:33:39 am »
I'm confused by all this cursing. I've repeatedly run into maps with magnetite clusters right next to a magma pipe, with plenty of iron bearing ore in dolomite instead of talc, and all that good stuff, plus bauxite.

Well, I'll try it out for you, and we'll see if it works or not.

I've never actually located adimantine. it makes me sad. i wish i could get reveal to work.
 >:(
make it where your miner mines the entire bottom level, and then remove it before he litterly mines it, then try the reveal tool, though I never use the reveal tool because it stops me from making armor out of Adamantine, magma buildings, and some other stuff
That's why you make a copy of the game and use the reveal tool on the copy so you get a general idea. (And then export them and use Dwarf Fortress's compress bitmap tool to make the pictures more manageable.)

Alternatively, turn it into a map and upload it onto the map website. Either way, you get the reveal without messing up your actual game.
