If all else fails use Dwarf Companion to check and see if he is demanding a specific metal or gem you don't have.

How exactly do you get carbon out of magma, considering it's generally composed mostly of silica?
How do you successfully use magma to heat a furnace to begin with without destroying the whole forge?

In all seriousness, I don't know. I can't see how to do it myself.

...or where you can smelt using nothing but heat from magma - in real life, the coke/charcoal is used as both a heat source and a chemical reducing agent.
I always figured they got the carbon they needed from the magma.

I gotta say, too, that I just adore your writing. I may have been initially attracted by the notion of the challenge, but now I stay for the writing, period, regardless of what happens with the challenge.

Waiting for new mod, bro. Afraid all successions and such are heavily suffering in its anticipation, so all of mine are on hold too.

Anyone have some epic Sparkgear-ness to share from this one? Unless I've missed something, there were no megaprojects, epic moments, or fun characterization. Very odd for a Sparkgear.

I blame my awful starting point for setting the tone.

I have my first ever drowning chamber, though I'm still waiting for a proper caravan to test it on. I've also just suffered the death of my only jeweler(not that I needed her so far with the complete lack of gems I've found...) due to thirst. Somehow she got trapped inside her jeweler's workshop after building it(something which shouldn't have happened since there were two different access points to it) and died. Still trying to figure out how that happened.

So, I'm going to try a drowning chamber--more specifically, a drowning chamber where my trade depot will be located, which I will use to get rid of elves--, which seems to be a typical sort of little project.  But I'm stumped as to how to go about it.

See, what I want to do is use a nearby brook to provide the water, then drain it out into a cistern below the trade depot location and let it evaporate down there. But how would I do this, exactly? The actual chamber part SEEMS to be easy enough: just channel a tunnel behind a preplaced floodgate, then raise the floodgate and let the brook pour in when needed. It's more the draining part I need help with.

Just started on a new fort, which for once didn't get slaughtered by wildlife upon embark. It has HFS somewhere on the map, for the first time in one of my fortresses. I dunno where it is, but knowing my luck I'll probably hit it pretty soon.
