DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Doors as defense?
« on: June 13, 2013, 11:40:53 pm »
Artifact doors can never be destroyed. (If they're a flammable substance like lignite or coal or something, if it catches alight, it'll burn forever.)

Is there any way to ensure an artifact is both a door and made of flammable material? Because I have to guard a tomb with that, that would be awesome.

Or maybe the elves aren't showing up because IT'S RAINING ELF BLOOD WHERE YOU ARE.

They're cannibals, that's probably be like wine raining from the sky for them.

Or is this too horrible?

Are you seriously asking that? We're talking about Dwarf Fortress now. Massacring everything that moves is casual. Childcare involves years of torture. Blood and vomit is normal painting for a corridors of Dwarven Halls. Every yak hair tries to strangle you and it rains elf blood.

So yeah, I think nothing really is too horrible.

I've only just started playing again, didn't know if the  community clamped down on that or anything. Glad to see it hasn't, true dorfs must build their forts out of the bones of their enemies. Then use those bones to make crossbow bolts to kill more enemies and use their bones to make more bolts.

On a somewhat related note; Are elven caravans bugged to not show up? If so, is there a way to fix that? I'm going to need some bolts....

You'd just modify the elf entry in creature_default.txt, but that's kinda moot since you can't really interact with contaminants in any way besides cleanup. There's no way to scoop up slush or splatters from the ground yet.

Ah, damn. Well thanks anyway.

Pity there isn't more cool things MB and Titans could do in this vein. Sure paralyzing dorfs and ripping their throats out is "horrifying" but something more "scary". Like some sort of Slenderman that teles around. Although I guess that's kind of the Bogeymen.

Maybe it's just hard to make a scary ASCII game :P

Urist McMiner cancels Dig: Hears something whispering in the walls......oh Armok no......please no.....

DF Modding / Elven Blood Snow Cheese
« on: June 13, 2013, 03:52:13 am »
My fortress of Tinclods is in a freezing and evil biome, so it snows blood. In my case it's elven blood. I've never modded the game before but someone jokingly called it dwarven ice cream and idea was just too good to let go. What would I have to do to have it be considered milk and therefor able to be made into cheese, since I can't make ice cream? (or can I?)

Or is this too horrible? I'm not sure where the line is here but the stuff is falling from the sky so it's not like I'm doing the killing. Besides, it's elven.

The SCP Foundation will want to speak with you.

See, that's a whole other idea entirely. Capture all the horrible creature that come your way, contain them, and commence experiments. That'd be pretty damn awesome.

Hell, why stop at the creatures?

Herding cats is only a problem if you bring females. Commence the sausage fest of Axepains the Hell of Leather.

Exactly what we're doing, but for real.

How much wood could a wood Urist chuck if a wood Urist could chuck wood?

OH GO TO THE CIRCUS WINDOWS.

I left my game going while I ran to the store for 10 minutes and my PC decided that was the BEST time to update and restart my computer. The elven blood glacier is no more.

Edit: Found the plot again and everything is back on schedule. Let the Urist Bros Ice Creamery begin construction.

You could also do Akulakhan and make your fortress a cultist-infested nightmare of insanity built around and inside a volcano, and if you embark on a properly evil area, create a Husk army to defend you.

Well the insanity is going to be a given either way, but not a bad idea. I'll need a way to spread dust and syndromes though....

Wasn't the MEGADORF kinda what you have in mind?

Yeah, I suppose it sort of is. Is there anything you guys can think of to put a new spin on it? Perhaps something that almost instantly wipes out my dorfs when I activate it to perfectly replicate Anumidium. Clowns might just be the best option, maybe have an umbilical connecting it to the circus? And then a lever.....oh yes....a lever......

Gonna be a pain to get all that brass though.

I know it's been a staple of the game for years, but I seriously fucking hate the natural disasters. Nothing sucks more than getting a good fort going and then BOOM, super volcano just wiped out half the continent. Try recovering a god damn crater the size of Texas, bitch. The dust from it cause a nuclear winter, ffs, how am I supposed to use this world after that?

Hell I can't even play in evil biomes anymore since the time I got a tornado made of despair that flayed my dorfs down to the cellular level, which made my pc chug trying to keep track of all the blood cells. I gotta get more ram or something, 4 TBs isn't doing it anymore.
