DF Modding / Elven Blood Snow Cheese
« on: June 13, 2013, 03:52:13 am »
My fortress of Tinclods is in a freezing and evil biome, so it snows blood. In my case it's elven blood. I've never modded the game before but someone jokingly called it dwarven ice cream and idea was just too good to let go. What would I have to do to have it be considered milk and therefor able to be made into cheese, since I can't make ice cream? (or can I?)

Or is this too horrible? I'm not sure where the line is here but the stuff is falling from the sky so it's not like I'm doing the killing. Besides, it's elven.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Building a new God
« on: June 11, 2013, 10:32:36 pm »
Has anyone ever attempted to build something like http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Numidium? It just seems like a perfectly dwarven thing, building your own god. Any ideas on how to make it special and more than just a giant metal structure?

Let's move this to the proper board, that sounds like a good idea?

So, let's do another shall we? I hesitated wanting to continue this since after the ale......come the sorrow....oh god the sorrow. But one must not give up. Never give up, never surrender, and never remember.

So when last we left I had a good underground farm set up but had run into an aquifer that I was too drunk to know how to get around. Apparently you can collapse some earth on it and just dig through the earth? Hell if I know. I also set a wall around the stairway leading to my base so we have some protection. The question I ask you guys is; What's next?

Above ground farms? Traps? Drunkenly trying to figure out the mess that is the military? Flooding my base by trying to dig through aquifer?

(oh, and 3 12 oz cans down.)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Alesorrow
« on: June 07, 2013, 06:06:44 pm »
So there's Drunk Fortress, sure, but those people knew what they were doing....in theory. Now we can't have that, can we? So welcome one and all to Alesorrow, the fortress built on, for, and likely partially of, booze. I'm going to get as tanked as possible and try and make a fortress centered completely around the making and drinking of alcohol. Everything else is secondary, if not thirdary.

Did I mention I haven't played dorfort since the 40d version and thus still don't quite know how farming, military, and the medical systems work? Did I mention I'm all of about 5' 8" and 130 pounds with the tolerance of a small dog? Let's try and have some "fun", shall we?

Any suggestions, dares, what-have-yous, feel free. Besides making a large stockpile of booze, what else can I do with this holy nectar? Hell, should I even bother?

Oh, and one pint of Milwaukee's Worst down.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / New Fort Boredom Remedies
« on: January 04, 2011, 08:13:11 pm »
I don't know about you guys but I always hate starting a new fort. The fact is.....it's boring as all hell. It's the same old routine every time. Make a farm, dig out rooms, set up stockpiles, blah blah blah. Until you get some more dorfs you can't really do anything except survive at the most basic of levels and that, to me at least, makes for stressful yet boring gameplay.

So do you guys have this problem? I can't be the only who finds zoning dining rooms uninteresting. What do you guys do to alleviate this? What are your suggestions?  We must have ways of entertaining ourselves until we have enough dorfs to do something awesome and interesting!

Cause otherwise I'm left with embarking with no planters or something to try and force some entertainment out of this boring time in a fort's history.

DF Gameplay Questions / Resolution problems
« on: January 02, 2011, 11:32:24 pm »
Not the New Year kind, the screen kind.

This isn't really a "gameplay" question but I can't get the latest version of DF to scale to my laptop's screen. I've messed around with the init.txt file for quite some time and changed everything I could think of but no matter what I do the game stays this tiny little box in a sea of black.

I've changed the X and Y values, I've changed the "BLACK_SPACE" to NO, I've messed with the Graphics settings and re-downloaded the game several times but nothing has had more of an impact than centering the position of the game in the black space. It works fine on my desktop (it's still not perfectly sized but at least it's not tiny) and I've copied the settings several times.

I'll admit I'm not much better than your average grandparent when it comes to stuff more complicated than downloading a torrent but it shouldn't be this hard. Can you guys give me any advice?

DF Gameplay Questions / Booze cooking
« on: September 09, 2010, 12:55:15 pm »
Can I still prepare meals consisting entirely of booze? Or do I need to add something else?

Also have there been any major changes to the cooking system with the newest version?

DF Gameplay Questions / A question about Clowns

What would you guys consider a adequate military force to have when you open a glowing pit? Am I going to need several squads of champions and hordes of wardogs or will a dozen or so well equipped swordwarves do the jobs?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The True Dwarven Insanity
« on: March 04, 2010, 04:59:50 am »
It's an accepted fact that dorfs are beard-hair away from mental retardation and pretty much lemmings. On occasion (i.e. damn near all the time) they go crazy.

I submit that this is not because of them suddenly snapping and losing what little self-control they once had, but rather them awakening from their idiocy and ignorance and getting a glimpse of the world around them like some character in a Lovecraftian story. The realize that their world is run by a omniscient god figure who is, at best, ambivalent to them, and at worst,  utterly sadistic (most likely the latter if we're gonna be at all honest here). Everything is trying (or at least able) to kill them or bring them suffering and there is little they can do to stop it. Like a Lovecraftian character they often are drive stark raving mad by this revelation and proceed on a number of different paths.

1. They claim a workshop and demand materials to build some grand object to either appease this God or deny it's power over them.

2. They become horribly depressed and eventually stop trying to sustain themselves or actively seek the sweet release or death.

3. They begin trying to kill any other dorf they can find to release them from the torment they've yet to realize they live in.

Thus dwarven insanity is not the last of their mind unraveling....it's the pieces falling horribly into place.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Holy crap that's evil...
« on: November 18, 2009, 11:18:32 pm »
In my forts I like to have a lot of wardogs assigned to my military dorfs. They're good as chasers and for sniffing out hidden foes. This necessitates a large number of dogs being brought at embark so I can get some breeding going. Once a litter of puppies has been born I place the extras in cages to avoid clogging up my halls. Once they're full grow it's off to the kennel to be trained.

I just realized today.....I made a friggin puppy mill in my fort. Holy crap am I evil.

You guys ever have a similar revelation while playing DF?

DF Gameplay Questions / Dead goblins stinking up the place
« on: November 15, 2009, 12:21:56 am »
After every thieving, ambush, and siege there are always a great number of goblin and kobold corpses lying around and generally making my fort look like the outside of a slaughter house.

I've set up graveyard and refuse piles and I've made both into garbage zones. I've declared all bodies dumped but still they stay there. I've tryed everything I can think of but still they stay there and rot.

How do I get my dorfs to dump their victims into a neat little pile?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Funeral Pyre
« on: November 13, 2009, 10:21:10 pm »
Let's admit it.....there's no better for a dwarf to leave this world than engulfed in flames. I propose we design a pyre on which to burn our fallen dwarves to ashes that the gods can may breath in.

It'd obviously have to be re-usable and flooding the dorf in lava isn't really a "pyre" so what have you guys got?

DF Community Games & Stories / We build this fort on rock and incompetence.
« on: November 11, 2009, 02:32:59 am »
I'm quite bored so I've decided to ingest a sizable amount of benzodiazepines and try to run a fort. The fort is named Zustashrimar (Ancientcastle) and is set near a river, a volcano, and a chasm. Trees are very plentiful and I've embarked with plenty of supplies. Lots of booze, seeds, shrooms and turtles along with 3 picks and an anvil. Only two war dogs and a single cat. I'll try and update this depending on my schedule and the actions in the fort.

Whenever this are starting to become too bland and predictable I'll do my best to imply some chaos into the works. (any suggestions for this are most welcome) The entire point of this is to try and be as bad a leader as I can while still keeping the fort alive.

Let's see how long a fort lasts when it's leader is as incompetent as the rest of his dorfs!

Rules:
1. No sobriety. Whether through benzos, lack of sleep, and anything else I think of I don't want to be thinking clearly when I do this.
2. No pausing the game. My dorfs don't get a break and neither do I.
3. Never shy away from danger. If something nasty is nearby I must not ignore it. Either by combat or other means I must deal with the problem in a swift manner.
4. Be ruthless. If a dwarf is causing too many problems he is to be punished....severely
5. Persevere.  I will not give up until all is lost. (as proven by the magma flood that claimed the first fort.)

PS- if someone could give me a quick rundown on how to make in-game screenshots that would be helpful.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Training Regimen
« on: November 10, 2009, 02:55:59 pm »
I'm starting an army in my fort right now and for the first time I'm setting up a comprehensive training regimen. My dwarves are going to be axedwarves so I want to be sure they're toughened up a bit before I put an battleaxe in their hands.

First off I'm gonna train them up as wrestlers with full armor and shields. Once that's done it's off to the screw pump to get some muscles. Only then will they get an axe and proceed to maim one another.

What's your training regimen?

DF Gameplay Questions / Does my fort smell or something?
« on: November 09, 2009, 03:55:49 pm »
I've got 63 dwarves and the game doesn't seem to give me anymore. My created wealth stands at over 260000 right now and I've traded a veritable crap load with any trader that comes through. What else can I do to attract immigrants?
