Some fire imps attacked and killed my woodcutter and set the entire outside of my base on fire. Several dwarves outside the fort caught on fire and managed to spread it to the inside. I seal off enough of the place to rebuild but the next season goblins decided to attack. Pretty much no military and no traps.

I've got it up to about 280k and I've run out of Aluminum (mining out some more now) and smoothed about half the walls. Sadly I've had very few strange moods in this fort so I'm not so sure I have any legendary metal workers scratch that, I have 1. I'm making plenty of meals so that should help a bit.

Thanks for all the advise though, it's certainly helped.

I got some dorfs on smoothing but it's going kinda slow (lack of skilled engravers). I'm also lacking in metal but I'll definitely try the sweet pod and statue ideas (got some aluminum I'm not doing anything with).

I've got 63 dwarves and the game doesn't seem to give me anymore. My created wealth stands at over 260000 right now and I've traded a veritable crap load with any trader that comes through. What else can I do to attract immigrants?

Goblins decided to ambush me right as I'd finished training up two full 5-dwarf sword squads (obsidian SS, copper plate armor, iron shields) and a human caravan showed up.

"Slaughter" is too light a word. Goblinite anyone?

Anyway I've stopped getting migrants so it's time to do some smoothing and building.

*edit* just started a massive mining project to look for some iron and flux now that I've got plenty of charcoal.

No, but if DF had that feature (gladiator fights) it would be awesome. It will give your Dwarves a happiness boost.

Not the ones fighting and dying, though. They might be a bit miffed.

Yeah, I won't even bother with a map without some magma. But I don't think it's spoiled so much as dwaven nature.

Dwarves live on booze, mushrooms, and kittens while warmed by the molten stone of the earth and bathed in nothing but the blood and vomit of their enemies, their fellow dwarves, and themselves.

I loaded up an old save and started playing it a little while ago. Soon after a woodcrafter went fey and made a pretty cool flute. Then I nearly had a heart attack went I saw a giant eagle next to my fort entrance. Luckily I remembered I had bought it off some elves and chained it near my door (on a legendary iron chain I believe).

If you really want their stuff just deconstruct the trading post while they're in it. You get everything but their pack animals and wagon.

I've done it a couple of times, it let me fit 150~ rooms in a pretty small area on two z levels. I think it's the best setup before "huge royal room with everyone in it"

I tried that once....friggin' disaster of crowding and lack of furniture.

My living quarters are set up as 1X3 rooms radiating from long hallways close-by my workshops. Each has a bed, cabinet, and coffer.

My veterans get the kind of treatment my nobles could only dream of. War heroes get decked out tombs and if they get too injured to fight anymore they get sent to a peaceful retirement of training the next batch of recruits (till one of them manages to kill him) or as a member of the fortress/royal guard.

I just feel like it's the least I can do for what are arguably my most useful and competent dwarves.

I also like to buy and chain up the most exotic creatures I can find. Giant Eagle at the front door, Elephants guarding my tomb, etc. etc.

A short 2 wide hallway leading from my entrance flows into my barracks. From there it's a long 3-4 wide hallway with my main rooms radiating off of it. At the end it splits of into my living quarter hallways. My food stores and farm are located as close to my barracks or main hall as I can get them and  specialized workshops are build on an as-needed basis close to their materials or whatever else they'll require. It grows pretty organically from there.

It works pretty well but it can a bit of a deathtrap if I don't plan ahead. The good thing about it though is that it's very quick to build and easy to expand if I need more room.
