Serpentine fried up in olivine oil and limonite juice?  Sounds gneiss.

Someone flip the magma release lever, we're gonna have to encase that horrible pun in obsidian.

I saw an imp and thought back to when my first good fort got wiped out by a wildfire started by a stray imp fireball. The elves were pissed but I was getting finished off by goblins and could care less what they did to me.

Good times

I still have no idea how to play, I just know how to build crap and not die.

Now if you'll excuse me I have to figure out why my farms aren't working.....again

Windytombs

It was a coastal redsand desert. Ended up killing half the fort in a flood trying to get a desalinization plant going.

Good times.

Right now I got a fort going in the middle of the desert. No planting, few trees, and only a single small pond. This should be Fun.

Anyway, thanks for all the suggestions and keep them coming if you can. We all get bored eventually and could use some new things to try out.

Oh hey! A Giant Jaguar! Here kitty kitty....

RP your dorfs. Get to know them and get more into their day to day struggles.

Urist McMiner digs and drinks

Urist McWoodcutter cuts down trees and drinks

Urist McAdministrator drinks and.......why did I bring him along?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / New Fort Boredom Remedies

I don't know about you guys but I always hate starting a new fort. The fact is.....it's boring as all hell. It's the same old routine every time. Make a farm, dig out rooms, set up stockpiles, blah blah blah. Until you get some more dorfs you can't really do anything except survive at the most basic of levels and that, to me at least, makes for stressful yet boring gameplay.

So do you guys have this problem? I can't be the only who finds zoning dining rooms uninteresting. What do you guys do to alleviate this? What are your suggestions?  We must have ways of entertaining ourselves until we have enough dorfs to do something awesome and interesting!

Cause otherwise I'm left with embarking with no planters or something to try and force some entertainment out of this boring time in a fort's history.

I always imagined the Giant Moles and such as about the size of VW Bugs.

GCS are Shelob

Also consider that your average medieval era human was all of about 5' 5"

Doom THEM, maybe. I'm well beyond their embark area, here, in the Netherlands.

Yeah but you have to keep dealing with the flooding problem. And tourist trying to get rat weed.

(couldn't resist, sorry)

Better than here in New York, though. The nobles are such a pain in the ass and we haven't got the economy update yet.

And on friday some mining company will open up a HFS and doom us all.

     To one Urist McPlantard

Why aren't you planting? The new farm is plowed and ready for seeds, so go ahead and stick some in the ground. And just in case you were confused, the farm is across the hall from the dining room you refuse to leave.....trust me when I say that nothing is gonna grow in that place (except communistic tendencies and that pile for cat turds in the corner; why has no one cleaned that up yet? You dorfs enjoy the pleasant aroma or something?)

The fact is Urist, I'm sick of your lazy ass. Do you know how unimportant you truly are? You are a god damned PLANTER. You put seeds in the dirt. Hell, you could just DROP them in the general area of the mud and something would grow. You could walk by with a hole in you seed pocket and OH SHIT PLANTS HOW DID THAT HAPPEN?!

So yeah, if you could get on that I can avoid the trouble of dropping you in the river.

The Unknowable Other

Edit: Now everyone is starving.......I WONDER WHO'S FAULT THAT IS? Your worthless ass is gonna be fishing for the rest of your days. And you will be using your bare hands.

SAY HI TO THE CARP FOR ME!

well he's only a kid, and a goner at that. No use wasting a barrel.

Besides a dwarven shot is probably equal to a half-pint or so, "shot" just meaning "however much you can drink in one gulp without choking"

"Because he's lazy. Now take a deep breath while I break your arm.....that'll get his attention!"
Fixed!!

You spelled "shot of rum" wrong. There's no "D" in it. Or E,A,P, or B for that matter

You know the kids are as tanked as the adults, even in the hospital

Doctors in general in DF tend to be pretty callous and laid-back, and there's little that can be done to force them to actually get around to treating patients.

Try re-injuring the dwarven child in question, either by cave-in or dropping his bed a couple z-levels. That sometimes provokes a diagnosis.

You ever think we might be evil sometimes?

"Why hasn't the doctor helped me yet?"

"Because he's lazy. Now hold still while I break your arm.....that'll get his attention!"

scroll up / down with your mouse wheel to zoom.

Thanks, it helped a lot. The fullscreen doesn't zoom in much but I can probably fix that with some init tweaking and just play windowed for now. Nothing like being able to construct impregnable underground fortresses with moats of lava only to be beaten by a friggin' interface problem. The programing of Toady is truly the most powerful of Dorfen foes sometimes.

That and my own ineptitude.
